Mileage and finish every drawing. More speed gets you mileage faster. Don’t detour around to get to your destination. If you like robots don’t study landscapes, (although you may later regret not seeing them on your trip)

Draw in pen, erasing is like driving around the parking lot for 30 min looking for the best spot, when you could have just parked farther away and walked in less time.

Don’t get too attached to a single drawing. Finish it, and then be excited to get on the road again. Enjoy the journey, not the destination.

Mix it up? Instead of 1 perfect mega drawing that was developed with 4 tossed concepts, I like to complete 4 short partial ideas. So four 1hr drawings instead of one 4 hr drawing of the character, and if I’m still excited, I’ll do an extra uber drawing.

But I hate it when I drag a drawing out longer than a day. My favorite draws are usually just sketches. When I only do 1 drawing a day I feel very unsatisfied.

>animation frames
I really like gainax and similar animations, so I took screen caps of KLK, TTGL, shanghai Batman, Kung fu cooking girls, and I just redrew the poses on paper with pen and quick marker.

>figure drawing teacher
Uh didn’t have one, I just did trial and error i guess. At some point i found a local figure drawing class, but it was just a model posing. No instructions. Figure drawing is probably my favorite part of drawing. It’s fun to capture the mood of the pose and the weight of the subject. Likewise, I hate faces, I don’t find them to be as expressive as a figure...

>bots
Everything is a study. I was doing studies for like 3yrs until /ic/ started giving me shit about it. The bots are probably just some cool robots I found on Pinterest. I didn’t really draw from imagination until like 2017. The green parts of the bar graph are slowly taking over the red >>4769637

I also really like robots. When you like something you spend more effort making it look how you want it. That’s why many people draw porn really well, because they draw with their dicks.

I’ve never really done a lot of the cel shaded look (or at least done a good job with it) so this is a little bit out of my wheelhouse but I put some basic lighting fundies in the picture. The big thing that stands out to me is her body below her tits would probably be somewhat in shadow with an overhead lighting. I think another thing that flattens your picture in the bottom panel is the highlights feel kinda randomly placed. Your highlights should be placed on the planes of the body most perpendicular to the direction of the light source. I’d say try practicing with a night time setting and a singular strong source of light. This should simplify the process of rendering quite a bit and help you get a better feel for defining forms with values.

>> No.4771798

Something to add to your notes cause I wanna stress this - think of the lighting process as a loop, as in
1. Take initial light source and light up surfaces this light is hitting
2. All surfaces that are lit up are reflecting light themselves
3. All those surfaces are also light sources, so back to step 1. but with a weaker light depending on the reflectiveness of the surface.

You don’t need to go too over the top but good usage of reflected light can add a lot of volume to the forms you’re trying to render.

Sorry, I had to hurry quite a bit as I have to go to work. So basically the order you put in shadows or lights don’t really matter that much, if you want you can just put the more dominant one later depending on the environment.

But yeah, you have to determine quite a many things, but it does come without thinking after a while, your imitating life after all.

Agree on both points. When I talk about an order to adding lighter or darker values, it's to lay it out in a clearer way, but as you improve or even right off the bat you don't really need to stick to that order.

Left was a little after discovering /ic/ about 18 months ago and right was earlier today.

I feel like I could have made twice the progress if I had applied myself better.

I'm pushing myself to actually finish something instead of just grinding anatomy.

A long way to go. Having trouble layering clothes/armor ontop of the anatomy, even when using references.

She turned out much chonkier than intended even if she is meant to be musclethicc.

The underlying anatomy/gesture had her upper half leaning back but that was lost once I started the clothes/armour. I even tried to draw the armor over an angled box first to try and make sure that I would draw it at the right angle and perspective.

I don't think i'll finish it but more on to another clothed figure.

The cloth is meant to be quilted an not some weird fishnets. Not that I have anything against fancy butcher legs of pork.

If you don’t like drawing, then you should probably quit. The only person worth comparing yourself to is yourself. I kept track of the days because I wanted to see if there was correlation between gains and mileage. Now I’m not so sure.

It could be exposure to new concepts and content. I only drew anime figure contours in 2013, but in 2014 i tried animation frames, doujin faces, robots, pen drawing, human faces. Everything after that is literally a loop of the 2014 study content.

Maybe try some new if you feel like you are stagnating. I think I’m going to try some backgrounds, color, story panels etc

The days/month drawing gets you polish, but it seems like the content variety moves the needle

Total fucking bullshit, man. I remember you in /beg/ when I first started and it almost made me quit because I thought that was the level of quality I was supposed to be at.

You've picked up solid observation from removing every single case of symbol drawing from your left portrait and good color theory from those whites in the beard, clothes, and the nose. Maybe just find a way to change the texture on the hair top and baggy eye, maybe the nose is a little off too. But you've certainly improved immensely.

Well, at that time, my skill is barely average, so obviously I only could land some low tier freelance works, or apply to small mobile game companies. Match 3 and Farm simulate games was trending, and my job is rendering fruits, candies, isometric houses, trucks, trees... I could also get some freelance tcg illustration jobs of indie studios. I thought I'd get more experience and fulfill my goal like that, but I was wrong.

My goal is to earn a lot of money, and illustrate artworks for top tier anime style games. Whoever thought Square Enix won't hire a random guy who can render candies, they'll surely hire skillfull and popular anime artists tho, I really was stupid and made the wrong choice. So, I'm trying to make up for it and experimenting anime style currently, building fanbase too. Before, more than 2 years ago all I did are semi-realistic stuffs.

My main concerns right now are making my edges better/cleaner and learning about colour, but I don't feel like I'm learning much. I read Gurney's Colour and Light and do paintings and studies, but is there some smarter way to study colour that I'm missing?

>> No.4779024

Color and Light is more about light and how it affects color, not so much color theory itself or how to pick colors that look good together. You're probably familiar with complementary colors already, so look into stuff like split complements, triads, etc. based on a 12 color color wheel.

If that implies confusion what I mean is you've been doing what you've took interest in and improved from it so sticking with that will of course continue that development. Neat. I'm 22 atm and have taken this as a passion for about a decade now but can't say i've done it nearly as often as other people would take it, far from so i haven't experienced as much growth. This pushes the urge in me to do it more if it means improving faster. I've always been too worried about error in the past, having cases with inconsistent results and just being very slow too but I think that's just from my lack of commitment. I want to see where things takes me now if I do it more and more learning from each error i make.

I always see NGMI crabs saying dumb shit like this. You should always try to finish up your drawings, ones that aren't just studies, to the best of your ability. Otherwise you're condemning yourself to sketch purgatory and then it becomes another huge laborious process trying to learn from square 0 how to color and shade.
