I need a zoomer or somebody to explain to me all the ways the term “OC” is used and misused.
I’m only familiar with “Sonic OC pls don’t steal”, “fursona” type of stuff. What’s an “artist OC”? Does it benefit the artist at all besides “its fun”? I remember people used to draw “artist avatars” back when forums were a thing. Don’t think anyone went through the hassle of making a full on character sheet. At least I can’t remember.

I know “OC” stands for “original character”, but that’s such an odd term nowadays since it has so many meanings. Do people call franchised characters the creators OC? Or does the connotation of the word not work anymore? Because it sounds off to me.

>Just because someone is good at drawing and designing characters

The key to designing characters well is having context. The setting they're in and their role in the story are essential elements to creating a character. Is the guy dressed like a pirate a cut throat rouge or a drunk at a costume party?

So many "OCs" are tacky trend surfing clusterfucks because there's no point to them. They're just gumbo of whatever the artist likes at the time. But when you do work on an actual project you have to draw more than waifus and self inserts. You need to make shop keepers and hobos, authority figures and children. You have to make a world that feels cohesive.

Why is it bad to make something that is going to be used for a couple drawings only? Besides, you can give some context through illustrations alone. Expecting an entire comic every time someone wants to draw a design they find appealing sounds ridiculous
If you want to see worldbuilding and character development, go to someone who actually focuses on comics to begin with... or play fucking DnD

crabbing anons aside, it definitely helps with making a brand or a presence.
I think it depends on what type of art you make though.

Characters don't always have to have so much depth or background story if their main purpose is to look cute and to represent your fondness for school girls or smth.

I never thought any anime/game waifu perfectly fit my preferences, so I just made one myself. I'm even pretty honest about the fact that my OC is made to be my perfect waifu. She's made up of design elements and shapes that I simply enjoy drawing over and over.

I don't really have a story for her (mostly because she's just a plain ol' human, and not some 2000 yr old succubus or ninja princess or whatever), but my goal is to show-not-tell her personality through illustration alone.

I personally stopped drawing fanart because I've noticed these trends like Bowsette/Tifa/boatgirls being incredibly exhausting to see all the time. I pretty much only draw fanart for characters that I feel don't get enough fanart. Typically, it's other artist's characters, and believe me, it really brightens up anyone's day to get fanart of their character unexpectedly.

I agree that OCs are fine, but fantastic if you actually make content with them. I spent years dicking around and just making anime fanart, until I finally took a chance and switched over to generating mostly original comics. People like short standalone comics that are funny or cute. Even just drawing a super short goofy conversation between your OCs counts.

It all depends on what you want to do in art. Even if you just want to do concept art, you can feature the same characters in them and still be making a visual story.

I don't soley draw for notoriety but whenever I do post something that isn't a girl all I get is "looks nice" or "good job", but when someone draws coom bait of any kind everyone just flocks to that a go out of their way to draw art of that character.

>> No.4781058

>>4780936
Short answer - yes
Long answer - You can get popular by drawing non-girls, you need to find the audience that is into whatever you are into and capitalize on that. Its all about engagement ratio with your current followers . If all your followers likes a specific thing, say, landscape paintings, then twitter will start showing your stuff to other people and if they like it too, you'll get more exposure and so on.

The problem is, the general twitter audience really just memes, social news, and girls. So even if you get good engagement with your current audience once your stuff gets exposed to the general twitter audience your engagement will probably drop off. I do occasionally see concept design/art blow up but they are super high tier, whereas with most anime girl posts that blow up the skill level isn't always that great.

Female characters have an astoundingly low floor for appeal since coomers will latch onto anything with tits, and for short-lived internet content this works perfectly.
But male characters have a drastically higher ceiling and are generally considered way more compelling in long-form content, since the personality flaws and niches that make a character compelling are considered more appealing in males. OCs are to story writing as Loomis heads are to construction. You act like just because most people wash out in the early stages that practicing is a problem and creators should "just draw lol" . It's all practice for a hypothetical project in the future.

OC is used for original characters either on their own, or placed into a universe.

The characters in said universe/franchise originally are the universe’s ‘canon.’

So we call them canon characters, since it’s the creators entire work, and the characters reside in it.

Does that help?

No I mean, why does it matter whether or not some nobody or aspiring creative professional has an OC as opposed to a working artist. Most working artists only do what they’re told and don't have the time or pull to feature their own content without a specific purpose, if they had any at all.

Based on this, it seems you guys are talking about creators. I assumed you were saying it in a way that meant all artists should have OC, which confused me.

I have OC meant for a comic, but I just don’t understand what other purpose an artist would have a mascot. Initially I thought they served mainly to distinguish one artist to another. Such a purpose did not make much sense to me.

Ding ding ding, you just answered your own question. Think it like this, they are created, so the artist can have a community of their own, it’s also used for collabs with other creators with their own ocs. Even companies do this, you know snk vs capcom games? They do that, so both sides of their communities not only play together, but also gain profits from them too.

>> No.4782654

For what other purpose is there to have OC than for a story you’re writing?

I mean personally I create characters just to make a fun design I like. Sometimes I never revisit them and forget they exist.

The OP is asking about characters that come to be associated with the artist that made them. Which is common since they usually draw that character the most, hence when you think about that artist, their character is going to be what you think about. It really depends what they do with their characters. Some lewd them up for their audience, I guess.

>>4782670
Presumably it might show your design skills? If you consistently output interesting character designs, that's a hireable trait.

Can't really speak since I'm not a business hiring people though. If you're working on your own thing, you could create a mascot kind of character for branding and fun, which is something I'm doing just because I personally would like to.
