I would say that the arms and head, as well as the basic torso were traced, it's really too close in relation to each other to consider it drawn by eye from reference. he even goes on to adjust the arm to give it a little more thickness compared to the original drawing.

The thing about shading color is it depends on the context of your picture. The color of the lighting will determine what color you shade with. Marco Bucci does a better job explaining it in his videos than I can - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwLQ0cDb4cE

This is kinda small but one thing that helped me is to stop thinking of it as shading as instead think of it as lighting the object I’ve just drawn/painted.

Your shadows will be tinted towards the colors of the Environment (this does not automatically mean something opposite of the light source color) of the environment is very similar in color to your light color, it will look similar to shading with black. it seems to me that people who regularly focus on trying their best to make finished pieces make the most progress. i imagine this comes from them drawing more, because they draw what they find pretty and because every study is something to help them make a finished piece more attractive. i feel like regularly trying to finish pieces also makes it easier for you to integrate study insights into your art creation process (i intuitively feel like this is the cause of fastest improvement, but i cant seem to describe why)

of course some fundies are omnipresent but not as explicitly noticable or easy to study in an enjoyable context (like perspective if youre interested in figure drawing) so i imagine you would need to set aside time to learn what you must learn with the expectation that you might not enjoy it. still, this seems like a more pleasant way to improve instead of grinding daily.

This level of work is achievable within 3 years from a complete beginner. I went from similar to the left pic to hyper-realism within 3 years when I first started out, that was 13 years ago. Pick a narrow subject and you can achieve anything within 3 years.
Recently I have taken an interest in character illustration (cute anime girls), I started just a couple of weeks ago, currently I am just doing construction, gesture drawing, and human anatomy. I decided to get back into fundamentals again because most of my experience is with digital painting, and not with lines. I am not expecting much in the immediate short term, but I suspect I will be able to achieve the right pic in OP within the next year, thanks in part to my already established experience.
Try not to demoralise yourself by comparing your own progress with others. Different people learn at different rates, and have different amounts of free time they can utilise. Demoralising yourself is only going to create inhibitions, resulting in you not getting anywhere. Stay positive and keep at it, everyone is able to achieve greatness.
