Gonna have to start networking with furries.

Amino, Discord, Twitter, Toyhouse, FurAffinity, and Instagram are all your friends. Deviantart has gotten a lot better with about actually promoting your artwork too - it's just the website looks like aids now.

I recommend starting accounts up on those platforms, and then joining furry discords and promoting your work. Create a few sockpuppets and fake interest in your commissions too btw, never offer request to furfags you won't ever see any pay. Get familiar with furry lingo too btw, you can't access your client base if you can't communicate with them.

This. Imagine all the time spent conversing, jumping through payment loopholes, negotiating and constantly trying to figure out the exact pose that your client wants, to then spend hours working on a piece below minimum wage and also risk getting your paypal account hardlocked just so you can make a """"""living"""""" drawing art.

I do furry art (although infrequently) and I have never had this issue. I also don't need to draw NSFW because there is plenty of interest in SFW furry & furry adjacent art.

If you get into the realm of closed species after establishing a brand you just sit back and make $500 for doing nothing.

>>4745272
I'm not sure, I post all my work individually based on what times I observe being peak interaction for the platform.

Yes definitely, if you can learn/already know how to draw an appealing headshot/bust you will be fine.
Most feral furry art isn't pornographic either.

If you grow a large enough audience you can start trying to sell adopts & grow your brand as a designer too.

If you don't have the style/skill though you may have to resort to NSFW & fetish content if you want to make it.

Not sure how serious but here’s some general advice for both furry and regular commissions.

- For porn make sure it’s a kink you kinda like at least. Don’t bother if you’re not at least good enough to get a few normie commissions with your real art, you’d have to charge too low and will deal with shitty clients and it won’t be worth the time or effort compared to flipping burgers. I rarely do anything for less than $100. Sketch commissions I stopped doing bc the sketch is the hardest part so it’s way less money for the effort. If you can bust out nice sketches quickly you could do stream commissions and make bank.

- If you use PayPal you can send invoices and hide personal info, if your worried then practice by sending a $1 invoice to a second account/friend and pay it to see exactly what the client sees. Once you have an invoice template that hides info and appears how you want it you can save it as a template to use in the future.

- Start out charging as high as you think you can get away with up front rather than raising your prices later. If you don’t get commissions right away then keep posting and get better at drawing, don’t lower prices. Premium prices for premium art will get you premium clients who are usually respectful and less controlling.

- Figure out what content you want to draw and make a bunch of art, zootopia fanart and other fanart is good, figure out the fav characters in whatever your niche is.

- Build a style that’s easy and fast for you.

- Post art for 2-3 weeks before opening for commissions.

- Make sure you have solid commission terms, check out big name furry artists term sheets for ideas. My recommendation is to keep the price sheet as simple as possible with only 1-2 commission types (Ex: single character w/ simple bg and headshots) and a multiplier for extra characters.

Also to add on to this - don’t start drawing furry and building this on the side if you aren’t comfortable with this ending up as a long term art career path.

if you get a huge following and make decent money you will slowly stop doing your other art and the style you use for furry will erode your ‘real’ art style. I could have gotten a studio job by now if I had kept to a day job and focused on my real art on the side, but instead I’ve spent the last two years having an identity crisis because I can’t get back to my ‘real’ art style and have no portfolio suitable for applying to studios. I have thousands of followers on my furry account and it means nothing and did nothing but give me money to get through immediate expenses and waste a few years of my life. I can’t *do* anything with this level of ‘success’ because Ive always planned to close the account and the persona behind it was completely fake. I didn’t network or interact with the community aside from talking to commissioners and thanking people every so often, so I didn’t even get any friends out of the experience.

Diving deep into actually doing furry or nsfw when it’s not your art career end goal, has a risk that people don’t realize.

if you want to make money on art then do the art you WANT to ultimately do.
Going the route of porn is only a mildly faster way to make money and could lead to you not being able to get a job doing the art you enjoy down the road. not because you’ll be blacklisted or some shit, but because you can accidentally change your ‘artistic’ self and warp your ability to draw anything else.

Furfag here. First, paypal is okay with furry pornography, as long as it follows their guidelines. Second, sending invoices is a must if you don't want to be fucked with chargebacks. Third, don't be so specific when sending invoices. A vague description of the commission like "1 character drawing" should be fine. Paypal doesn't need to know how many inches their dog penis want on their drawings. Or else, they will see that as bestiality, thus you'll get your account banned. Fourth, your paypal account may get blocked until you provide documents and other stuff about your business so, you may need to show them some sfw place so they have an idea of what you draw.

Man I’ve started to get quite a following and people chomping at the bit for commissions from me. 3 different people this week have asked, and agreed, and have already payed. After reading your posts though...man I feel like I want to refund them. I don’t want this to be my end goal. I like to draw it, but I want to make bigger things than porn. I guess I’m starting to feel exactly how you do. Thank you anon, I think I’m finally able to put that twitter to rest and get back to my significantly smaller sfw twitter. It’s going to be harder, but I believe it’ll be much more rewarding. Maybe I’ll finish these current commissions just to not let anyone down, but I finally think I’m done with. Thank you anon for real

Definitely charge more!

What I recommend for entry level prices/new artists -
Estimate how long something takes you and set your prices by 'minimum wage' ($15 per hour is my recommendation as a minimum, though I wouldn't make any commission type cost less than $20, even if its only a 30 min sketch), honestly that's still too low, but if you can't charge at least minimum wage then you're simply not ready for commissions and either need to work on your skill level, building a following, or both.

If you want to do commissions but those prices feel too high or no one bites, then do some raffles, take a few requests, or do fanart/idea polls on twitter. You'll get decent practice in and build much more of a following by doing occasional requests/polls, instead of trying to sell your art for extremely cheap and hope someone eventually sees it.

I don't have any specific big name artists to suggest, more so I would just browse twitter for anyone who is relatively popular and has their commission sheet posted. There's no perfect way to do it. Just look at people who are having obvious success and compare their commission sheets and terms of service to see what they have in common and what makes sense for your own art.

I'm glad that was helpful!

It's scary how easily getting that success can kill off your other art and completely disrupt your core goals.
If you actually enjoy it then I don't see anything wrong with keeping it as a side account or doing rare commissions, as long as it doesn't become the main focus or become 'you'.

Everyone on /ic/ always talks about doing furry/nsfw/'selling out' and easy ways to make money, but there's long term consequences that can be hard to fathom until you find yourself there.

Good luck anon!
