Is it just me or does it feel like Korean artists tend to learn the fundamentals a lot younger? Maybe a course in high school? You can clearly see he has a solid understanding of perspective that's been taught rather than 'winged'. I've seen a lot of talented 17 year olds in the past but rarely with strong fundies like his.

I think you can only make a statement on how much you like it. People change, their art reflects that. Maybe he just wouldn't like drawing this today. If you know what he's doing here there are mistakes that he wouldn't do today. Things like hatching and some anatomy are a bit sloppy and he doesn't have a lot of economy but considering he was a kid when he drew this... comics are a beast of their own to learn, he does that, great character acting, realism and cartooning, gesture. I'm not a fanboy of KJG but he was already a complete artist by that age and it's not because of talent. You gotta know what the fuck you're doing to do this and there's no other way but mileage.

because he's lying. Asians do this shit all the time man.

I remember in college I knew this Japanese girl studying English as long as I had been studying Japanese and her English was like... 100% perfect. Perfect American accent, knew all the slang. Even sounded California ish. Was easily able to make friends with all the Americans.

I was like wtf? I'm grinding so hard at this, why is she so good? And my friends would say oh she probably had an American boyfriend. And when I asked her she said she never did she just learned it here and there and watched TV shows and stuff.

Come to find out, no half her family lives in America and she lived here for like 8 years and went to international school in Tokyo for years.

"Yea no i just picked it up self taught here and there." That's what Kim said too. Oh I'm just self taught. I just pick it up here and there. Fucking liar. He probably had professional artist parents who trained him and sent him to professional teachers from a very young age, and then they just lie about it so they can pretend their family produced a genius.

Thats simply not true. If the genes were there then they would have become the center of the world like the west has but instead the majority of Asia is consisting of backwards shithole nations and the only ones that are less shitty are the ones that were occupied by the west at one point.
Seeing a few asians in college or university working their butts off does not mean the rest are like that.

If this is really how he drew at 17, then he's def got worse. This is why fame is so damaging to creatives. Better to remain a nobody and aim for a comfy living from your art instead.

I have no blog, not working in illustration field.
I am thinking about updating my webpage with drawings and paintings, but that would be a lot of work.

I think these are around the same time as the one before (maybe a bit later), theyre more how i work these days.

This guy learned Japanese purely from self-study and watching TV, and he speaks it better than some natives even:

https://youtu.be/fhaovFrXnjE

TV and books are the best way to learn. There’s plenty of people who move foreign countries and even after several years still can’t speak at an advanced level, why? Because once they know enough for their day-to-day, they get complacent.

tl;dr - your friend likely wasn’t lying about picking up the language from watching TV. Language is acquired through immersion, not learned.

No, I didn’t. I specifically addressed that living in a foreign country doesn’t magically endow you with the language skills. Same for attending “international schools.” The real improvement in fact would come from having to study certain topics in your second language, like math, history, science, etc... again, cause you're getting constant immersive exposure to the language through study. Language learning require comprehensible input. That’s all. Lucky for you, everything she did to learn English, you can do to learn Japanese or whatever. Just read a lot and watch a lot of TV. It’s that easy. You haven’t been making progress simply because your study methods are wrong and this ineffective. 1000 hours of drilling grammar and vocab is essentially 1000 hours of wasted time. The brain doesn’t learn languages that way.
