Coloring in grayscale is a surefire way to get a lifeless result just to save your own ego from a few bad color studies.

This video helped me a great deal.
The caveat is that you need Photoshop to make this work. I tried looking into Gradient Maps in CSP, and it's just not that robust enough to do what Marc does in the video.

I can honestly tell 90% of the time if an artist uses grey to color, it often makes things feel a bit souless and "grey" kek. Color from the start is just a good habit to get into.

It's gradient maps and he tweaks it a lot until it starts looking half decent. If you search hard enough you can find a mega.nz link to a bunch of process vids from pic related artist. It's on the archive

I'm 100% sure Krita can do this, I just checked

Also they mention in the comments how you can do it in CSP

>> No.4720011

It's an ok method for beginners because of bad values but I don't recommend it if you can just work with color. You have to change the colors for every change in value to avoid it looking soulless, adding even more work and nuance. It's ok for stuff like cel-shading I guess.

i have various methods of greyscale to color. though generally i like to get some basic greyscale down then color shift them with either ctrl b or ctrl u then continue painting and choosing from there.

this one started in greyscale until i shifted the base layer and overlayed some color then kept painting from there.

Any hint/key word?

You can also do a underpainting to map out the major values and paint on top of it. Once you have the main colors and values established rendering is a breeze. There's really no added benefit of rendering in black and white, quite the opposite.

give the light colour before you add the base colours, for example have the greyscale layer, then use a gradient map or colour balance layer to make the shadow blueish and the light yellowish, then add an overlay layer with peachy skin, red shirt, blue jeans etc

>gross hazy looking effect
Use more hard edges to avoid that

depends on the complexity and likelihood of major color revisions, separating colors/values makes it a lot easier to make changes down the line

Only because you have the masking work done.

Even after you put the color on top you still gotta do more after it or it's gonna look muddy, op. It's a shortcut for doing values if you're bad at values with color and not much else

I like your stuff a lot do you perhaps have a link to your twitter? I gave google image search a try but it didnt find shit.

>> No.4724072

I get the feeling that it will be really hard to keep things consistent by coloring this way, maybe it's good for single illustrations, but if you're making a comic or assets for a game I wonder if things would just look jarring from drawing to drawing

if it looks like shit it means your rendering and color choice is garbage dipshit
