Carpal Tunnel: a scary enemy that can ruin your life.

How to avoid it?
I heard
>just stretch bro
>don't stretch
Apparently you should do light full motion exercises and not really *stretch*. What's your thought on it?

>take breaks
How many, how often for how long?

Also you are supposed to not bend your hand too much. It's apparently furthermore caused by repetitive movement, so maybe switch up the parts you draw.

Any input? Anyone here who has it? How is life now, what would you have done differently? Is it treatable?

That's natural, you need to develop dexterity like you did with your wrist. It'll be a small temporary set back but it'll be worth it on the long run if only because of the health benefits, let alone the better drawing abilities you'll have.

#1 I stretch chest, shoulders, biceps, olbiques and neck.
#2 hold pencil as light as humanly possible.

some things to keep in mind
-Vertical mouses/ergonomic mouses are built to reduce chance of carpal tunnel too. https://youtu.be/XaWLLEztrIs?t=64
-in the past Blender used to have right-click as select, people would always complain and after they updated it to change it to left-click one Blender dev came out and said selecting with right-click is better for you as it reduces strain by not relying on the index finger for most clicks.

Thing i always wanted to be sure of, what about details?
If i made a small head and im drawing the eyes, should i still draw with shoulder or its ok to use the wrist?
Overall, drawing small things really bothers me because of that. idk if commiting to arm in this scale is the best approach, but on the other hand i dont want to damage my wrist, so im hesitant.

I'm not an artist. I'm just here because I love art. However I do lift and I have pretty sever carpal tunnel. I wake up every morning with numb fists and pain. Every time I do hand exercies or grip exercises I'm in pain. It also weakens my arms and makes my lifts shittier. I might get surgery but my current solution is ENJOYING THE PAIN. I just give 200% effort. I grip even stronger. I lift until my veins burst and my arm turns blue (literally). I punch myself in the stomach or somewhere else to spread the pain and make it easier to lift. I might get surgery some time in the future to fix this but it's kind of doable. I'm sure as an artist it's much less of a problem and much more doable then it is for me as a lifter yet I still do it. You can too. I'm also a 3D artist among other things I do on my PC and I know how it is. You can do it bro.

>>4683253
Your solution is basically fucking up your arms more. They'll only endure so much before permanent damage is made, it's not just about the pain dummy, the pain is the warning that something is being damaged. Also, 3D modeling, wheter you do it with a tablet or worse yet, with a mouse, will also take a load on your injuries. Dude, you're into lifting, do you should know about permanent muscle injuries.

put my hand in a splint splint a few days ago because of wrist pain and now both having pain in both my elbow and shoulder

>> No.4688449

Is it better or worse carpal-tunnel wise that I use my mouse with my right hand and I draw with my left? On the one hand I think it distributes the strain more evenly between hands, on the other since I use the mouse more, maybe that hand is more 'trained' and my left is therefore more vulnerable? I'm just speculating, what do you think?

Can you strengthen your wrist? Like over time, can you draw more and more without pain? KJG draws like 24 hrs a day without carpal tunnel, and he uses an incredible amount of wrist and finger movements.

>> No.4688776

>>4688712
I think it has nothing to do with muscles. just nerves being compressed against tendond that slide in and out of the tunnel. I assume they get inflamed or they even get thicker because of the practice which then compresses the nerves.

Or its really just psychological. I noticed that this affliction seems to be pretty badly researched despite how easy it seems to be.

>> No.4688814

Is there a solution for this if you aren't a painter or draw in small surfaces? I always feel like i put too much pressure in my pencil and when i realize i try to be more relaxed, but since i work on trad it's hard to do.

>> No.4689012

>>4688814
think of it like this
if you draw hard on paper erasing is gonna be a bitch when you line over it. Also be sure you sharpen your pencil were the majority of would be the graphite itself and it'll stop ya from puttin too much pressure on the bit itself.

That's called cubital tunnel. It has a similar cause.

I've just started drawing and I've already gotten carpal tunnel. The numbness is slight, the exercises help, and I've started offloading non-drawing things to the left hand, but it's worrying. Shouldn't have waited until my 30s to learn, I guess.

Debating whether to see a doctor ASAP or see if it resolves with a splint and stretching. It's been a couple months already.

You're getting RSI from bad ergonomics and weakness. Set up your driver so you don't have to press so hard to get the stroke you want and do pullups/bar hangs/shrugs/deadlifts etc. anything that will strengthen your grip. t. had tendinitis a couple years ago and draw way more now and have had zero issues with it
