My husband is Indian, and that's what I've mostly noticed when we've talked about this sort of stuff before. There's very limited access or exposure to art and people that draw. And people that do draw tend to have a very specific style, or do the usual celebrity portraiture. I see that in my own country as well. I'm from the balkans and because of limited exposure to applied arts most of the concept artists I see from here tend to have an old-schooly, "imma draw 900 sexy women" sorta vibe to their work.

There are plenty of indian artists, and plenty of good ones, but they just don't really become outstanding for the same reason there aren't a lot of outstanding jewish artists. From my experience a lot of Indian culture (specifically Kannadan) sells this idea that 1. You want to be successful in life and 2. You need to outplay people in order to get ahead and be successful, as opposed to Japanese/Chinese/Western cultures that tell you that having a degree of mastery takes a certain precedence over fiscal success.
In general, India (as a whole) has never really had any facet of their culture focused on complete mastery of a craft except for religion and military stuff (due to their caste system and the fact that theyve never really had a golden age where the merchant class aqcuired a surplus and was able to indulge in luxuries like art), so Indian art is radically under developed.
But there are a lot of Indians in animation, from my experience, so there might be a big indian showrunner soon.
