IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES - try ~1000px, <1.1mb

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

the trapezius doesn't extend over to the collarbones like that, it's a back muscle.

I didn't see the second photo. Also very nice. Since the model is leaning forward, there is no muscle on the very top of the shoulders. You'd be able to see it with a more muscular model but especially on the right shoulder you can barely see the shoulder muscle itself, and where you drew the red is not shoulder muscle on your second drawing's right arm.

No, they're not. They're easy. They're hinges. One of the earliest assignments in an anatomy for artists class I took was drawing all of the joints of the body as hardware - hinge for the elbows and knees, ball joints for the ankle and wrist, etc.
They're also a junction. No muscles or tendons go across the hinge, they start or end there. They can only move in one direction, and the inner joint is a hollow, and the elbow tip is the end of a bone.

I'm not great at explaining but you should construct things using forms, and then block in all your major values, then you go in with low saturation color and slowly build up contrast between values, edges, and saturation.
To get that "polished perfect" look you just sink a dozen hours into rendering every single part of your image, theres not really a faster way around that desu.

ive never tried vilppu or draw a box but if youre going to practice boxes when you're starting out you need to connect the lines as well as drawing all edges, not just the ones visible to you.

It looks like you're drawing the contour of the box in one stroke, you should be using a separate straight line for every edge. (this changes once you start heavily distorting perspective but it doesnt look like youre ready for that yet)

OK, you have very basic problems in head and facial construction. i recommend you go through Huston's videos and assignments in the video thread which i've linked here and learn to draw a head before you try to paint one. Look at the painter Ingres's drawings, or Da Vinci's drawings for instance - they are magnificent works of art on their own. Then they painted over those. I wouldn't worry about timing yourself at all.

this is an annoying problem. go to the line-of-action website every day and do the 1 hour class. read their article on how to do 30 second gestures, because your first ones will be terrible. then after you're done with those, watch proko's videos and copy what he is doing. sometimes it seems like an artist isn't explaining something, but when you watch and rewatch the video before and after having tried to do something, and copy their moves, you realize that you just aren't really listening to them, or can't listen to them because they take too many things for granted as they're teaching. proko has this problem for sure, where he'll throw way too many things at you way too fast. just take your time and do the 1 hour class every day, watch the videos before and after, and copy. eventually you will get it.

Real answer at the end.
Well, a lot of it is just natural progress over a year we're talking about a hundred or so drawings and each of them had different issues I had to tackle. In those old ones I was already focusing on "composition", supposedly all the lines were pointing at her hands holding a heart. That was while watching some videos and looking up composition examples on Google. That was already a year ago just so you get the idea, each drawing I've been doing is trying to apply something or mid drawing I have to consciously find a solution (or Google it)
I wouldn't say I'm a studying man, I'm more into researching. So I can't do something and I go into Google or YouTube or read opinions of other people on the matter. That a hundred times.
Of course I saw the occasional Sycra or Proko video and tried to read Hampton but just tried to absorb the pictures, didn't really study.
BUT this is what you want to know.
For that drawing I'm mostly using animation knowledge to make it less stiff. I studied the Animator's Survival Kit by Williams for like 4 or 5 days when I wanted to do a walking animation but the concepts kinda stuck with me. I mostly skimmed the book but you are bound to learn something. That book, and reading up people talking about the basics of animating and watching random animation videos and gifs made my brain think more about the flow of things so I can make things less stiff and simpler.
I'm not telling you to go animate though it's extremely time consuming and hard. Try to study composition and flow and gesture.
For my anatomy it was just practice. That's NOT a good method but I'm bad at studying. I keep drawing until I get better but it'd be much faster if you just drew people from reference pictures.

I mostly want to do people and anime.
I started on DAB and I plan on continuing through that because I felt too retarded for Loomis Figure Drawing. DAB man reccomends splitting up your drawing into 50/50 practice and fun but I always have no fucking clue when I try to do "fun" drawings because I'm still extreme /beg/.
It feels like I'm probably starting and stopping a lot of shitty doodles at once because technically ""fun"" drawing isn't meant to be practice right?
I kind of want to cut out the "fun" drawings and grind through DAB so I can be done with it but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to grind like that.
I really like things with structured, handholding approaches.
I can put in the time I just need to know what to do

That’s pretty rough, sorry to hear that. Do you have a way to stick paper on a wall or some vertical surface? Other things that come to mind are practicing with a whiteboard or using a screenless tablet. Is this the specific tree the book wanted you to draw or is this something you took a picture of in your backyard? If it’s the latter, try to find a better time of day to take this picture - there’s a lot of ambient lighting that makes it hard to define clear forms. Also when you’re starting off, take the photo, turn it b/w, and turn up the contrast and brightness, this should help you see where values are darker and lighter in the photo. If you plan on retaking the photo, maybe try sundown or sunup? Try and pick a time where you’ll have one particularly strong light source from one direction.

Block-in the big general shapes and work from that down to the specifics. You're going in with a small brush and trying to do detail work way too soon.

This is the kind of stuff you need to be doing at the start of a painting. When you get done with block-in you can move on to blending and then rendering.

It means your figure looks stiff. Dead. Wooden. Lifeless. Like they're a wooden board. Normal people almost never stand totally straight, you know?

>What is gesture drawing supposed to help with once you actually start drawing the full person/contours that you see?
Expressing motion, weight, balance/unbalance, and emotion. Once you can put the whole pose down on paper, you use gesture to learn how to push the pose. How much can you exaggerate a man pulling on a rope to make it seem like he's pulling it even harder? If they're carrying something, make it heavier. If they're sad, make them sadder.

Does that stuff make sense?

OK, but there is a lot of value, particularly if your goal is to get proportions right, in doing it over and over and over, etc. a sense of proportion is built much faster when you do 25 poses a day rather than 1. a sense of proportion means when you're drawing the arm or leg you just kind of "know" how big it is. to refine this sense, do a lot of poses rather than just one. it seems counter-intuitive but it actually works. which is why everybody recommends it.

>you sure the legs are short?
Yes, the problem here being that the leg on the left was drawn as though it is completely straight, when in your reference there's a noticeable bend to it. Not accounting for the bend means you gave him a weird midget leg. Also the other leg was drawn in such an unreadable fashion I'm not even sure how to go about critiquing it, I'd have legitimately no idea what you were going for had you not included the ref. Basic stuff doesn't have to mean grinding out boxes and circles, you could instead do studies of easier poses. Try to get references where the models are nude or close to it so you can see how each of the features twists and bends under the clothes. When you just try to draw someone wearing baggy ass clothes without understanding what they look like under the clothes, you end up with a messy drawing with bad anatomy.
