>“draw the rest of the owl” meme
its based on a joke image pointing out how a lot or art resources explaining the process had seemingly unexplained jumps in quality and polish from one step to the other that are the actual part most people actually have issue with, from there the joke:
-draw some circles
-then draw the rest of the fucking owl
and because art is a process with a million steps working in parallel, and not a strict heterogenous render with a computer where you can see each specific element being created in a specific way, a LOT of tutorials online dont show how things go from boxes and spheres to actual people or animals or objects

This one shows a proportional guide for 8 head tall characters and how to use primitive shapes and forms to establish proportions quickly. The idea of this is to have a simple 'model' to build proportions quickly. I do not really recommend this approach, instead I recommend
https://www.deviantart.com/cushart/art/Tutorial-576687646
and
https://youtu.be/DaG-cBidCBw?t=107
As it allows you to place your figure in perspective and relates proportions to something other than the head, which is more useful.
>>4664644
This is silly, don't follow 'tutorials' like this. It is drawing a specific character for no purpose other than drawing that specific character. If any value to be had from this, I would say it shows some of the characteristic shape design used by 'anime' artists.
>>4664647
This is Krenz, I would highly recommend you study his work and use his tutorials.
Here he is showing how to group hair clusters and designing the strands with asymmetry. He shows how to place these clusters onto a form. He also shows how you can design clusters in a more gestural manner for different types of hair.
>>4664656
This is a 'line of action' method for establishing gesture. You essentially use a strong 'action line' to establish a flow then build a simple model based on that, then build the forms based on that model.
This particular tutorial shows how you can use an S curve as the line of action to get dynamic poses.

>> No.4665591

>>4664681
This one is a basic 'manga' facial proportional guide, not really much to say about it. I do like how he shows his method of establishing the points in which the hair will flow from. If you look at 4 and 6, that is how he figures out where the hair will flow from.
>>4664683
This is the same as many others. Build a rough skeletal gesture, build forms on top, refine for your character. He is also showing how proportions change with perspective and how he wraps ellipses in order to figure that perspective.
>>4664686
This is neat, have not seen this before either. He is trying to show the sweet spot between something being flat and having 'too much form'. I could see why that is confusing, but if you think about it in the context of perspective it makes more sense. In order to get 'too much form' you would have to be viewing it from the top, which is shows here. Consider how the layers and forms would overlap depending on which formation is closer and farther from the viewer.

This shows the gesture and action of the shoulder girdle. It shows the how the girdle moves with the arm.
The forth image shows how the scapula rotates when the arm is raised
The fifth image shows how the scapula moves forward and backward when the arm is moved forward and backward, respectively.
>>4664795
Just a poor proportional guide
>>4664798
This is NSIO and his tutorials are excellent https://www.deviantart.com/nsio/gallery/45894768/tutorials
Here he is showing how to simplify complex forms into simple primitive forms so you can more easily establish perspective and proportion. Boxes, cylinders, spheres, and cones are far easier to draw than say a leg or arm. Use these primitive forms to place your figures in space and establish your proportions. This way you have solved many problems before considering things like anatomy.

>> No.4665592

This is a fucking excellent hair tutorial. He essentially shows how to place hair as a volume onto another volume has well as how hair is disrupted by other objects, areas of detail, and shape design. Cannot really say anything better than he already described. So just read the damn thing.
>>4664807
This is just a phenotype guide, pretty useful for figuring out how to design a character I feel
>>4664808
This just shows that it is easier to start with a simplified gesture and build forms over it than to try to start with forms right away. But, honestly, just delete this one from your drive because it is shit

>> No.4665593

>>4664809
This one is neat. >>4664887 >>4664897. Starting from the top two eyes: He is showing that the implied lines make up the eye shape based on the shown curves. If you see his dotted lines, that is showing the implied line/shape. See how it meets awkwardly in the first eye and more cleanly and appealing in the second?
The second set shows how the eyeball shape fits into the skull. If you figure the diameter of the eyeball it should fit more naturally into the skull. Observe the dotted transparent circle showing this diameter. See how the first one is clearly too large and the second is a more normal size. He even gives a little proportional measure from the frontal bone to the ear and places the rear corner of the eye at the halfway mark. This is relatively good for that type of character. But basically it is showing to keep the eye diameter in check.
The third set is showing a common mistake for beginner 'anime' artists where they just start throwing in nonsense highlights and shadows. The cornea, or the lens of the eye, is a convex lens that sits on top of the iris (colored part). This is what creates the highlight on shadow effect of the second eye. As the light hits the convex lens it creates a highlight and light passes through the lens onto the iris.
The last part is just showing how to use lines when creating a profile view
>>4664812
This one basically shows another common mistake be beginners in messing up the perspective of the eye. It shows that in profile view how the eye should face and how the top eyelid is responsible for most of the eyelid closure.
>>4664817

>>4664836 >>4664837
These two show the same thing as many others but in a poor way. Again, build gesture model, add forms, refine
>>4664847
lol this one shows a common mistake when beginners try to draw the draw. It is showing how you should think of the jaw as a truncated pyramid in order to establish it's perspective.
>>4664855
This is just showing, as many others in this thread (in case you are slow in the head) that you should build a simplified figure from primitive forms to establish gesture and perspective. He even references the proko 'bean' exercise which is incredibly useful. I highly recommend proko's figure drawing course for understanding this kind of method to figure drawing.
>>4664863
Again, a very similar one to the rest but it also shows how can build a figures perspective and proportion using a box for placement and as a guide. I am pretty sure Loomis shows this exact method in Figure Drawing for all its Worth. Another thing it points out is overlaping form which is KEY for showing perspective especially with more ambiguous forms like muscles
>>4664870

Okay, so in the first part of that hair tutorial he is trying to teach you that hair is not dissimilar in form to a cloth laid over a sphere.
If you look at number one, think about what makes your brain understand that the form underneath is spherical, look how the cloth adapts to the form of the sphere. Hair is very similar to this as it adapts to the form beneath it. What he shows it 'cutting it up' which I tried to emulate with number 2.
Observe how the cloth wraps around the sphere. The sphere, like the head, dictates a majority of the form of the cloth and hair will do the same. Hair, however still does have its own volume so you have to keep that in mind.
And if you look at number 3 you will see how that may be applied to a skull. See how the cloth takes the form of skull underneath, see how it still wraps around the form of the cranium?

Thank you, I definitely have lots to work on. I think I kinda understand the process of lineweight, but I'm not sure if most artists use vector mode to fix their lines however I read that some artists start off with a really big canvas. Like 6000x6000 or more and usually start off with the sketching and lineart, then they shrink the image resolution so it won't be too big but I'm not sure if that is an effective way for someone who still has much to learn.

I have H2D right here on my desk and I'm sure it's a great reference if you already know what you're doing but it fails hard at its premise of teaching absolute novices, because it's literally draw the fucking owl tier and its presentation of ideas is completely schizophrenic. It goes from "heh you can learn to draw kiddo, talent matters less than hard work" at the beginning of chapter 1 to using a bunch of perspective terminology without explaining any of it five pages later.

I am a /beg/ retard who did a few lessons of drawabox so I got H2D out of curiosity even though I had already heard it's like this and not really a beginner book, but still figured it'd be cool to skim around and get ideas/find things to look into and maybe come back to when I'm better. If I didn't already do drawabox I would be completely confused by chapter 1 of H2D lol, it's a turbo shit tool for teaching noobs. This isn't even a controversial opinion but I was surprised by how bad it is, it is completely mismarketed.
