Back from a 6-month break and trying to learn imaginative drawing again. Doing this shit is SO FUCKING HARD for me. It took me 2 evenings to even get to this point with a simple character and easy pose. Any fatal flaws you guys could point out?

BTW do you guys think I should focus more on doing quick and simple gesture studies and construction practice or just keep pushing out these original characters with my limited posing/design- skill?

PS. I haven't created a Draw Thread before so I'm not sure I got everything right here. Just didn't want to create a thread for one mediocre drawing...

I really like it but the composition is backwards. All the nice shading and detail is around the outside, and the main focus in the middle is just a big black block. I'd say if anything doing some research on composition would be super beneficial

It's good, i'd change the orientation of the head. I understand you wanted some contraposto going on but it clashes a lot with the bombastic very arched backwards, chest first standing pose she has.

The draping is very good all arround (especially the flow you have going on with the pants, noice). I'd change the cape a bit, she bunches up against the neck (when the gravity should push it down against the trapezes). It should also folds a bit more on itself for the amount of drapery that is bunching up on that one shoulder.

good job anon

>> No.4655668

bummer! If you want to invest a little bit, getting a drafting table (the one with the light that shines up) will allow you to trace other drawing easily, so once you get a good lineart you can trace it so that you aren't screwed if you mess up on some colouring.

I can't thank you enough for doing this! You make it look so easy... I'm definitely going to fix the drapery. Are you absolutely sure I need to change the head pose? I feel like yours is more correct and appealing but it's messing with the "attitude" I want her to have. Your pose is more heroic whereas mine is kind of "Don't give me any shit or I'll stab you".

I love the stylization you did with her face. I think I'll take her into that direction a bit. Do you have a blog btw? Are you Whitebox by any chance?

>messing with the "attitude" I want her to have.

I see where you are coming from, it's just that it looks physically tense at the neck (just try puffing up your chest and tilting your head down like that, it's not comfortable). For that vicious "don't tread on me" look i'd go even farther and tilt the head backwards and a bit on the side, like those cliché yakuzas you see in mangas.

>Do you have a blog btw? Are you Whitebox by any chance?

I m not Whitebox :). My finished stuff is more painterly (pic related). I almost never do linework. My insta has been dead for a year (occupied on personal stuff, i m building a patreon related project).

You're doing commissions for customers with all flat coloring? Are they always happy with that? Do you have to tell them upfront? Seems like you could take on more jobs if you didn't have to render/cell shade every piece. Also I just like flat coloring.

I think that's a good idea. It works in this one >>4656978 because we can see pockets of well lit areas, so the white foliage in the corner works well as it's consistent with the rest of the drawing. In >>4656976, there is a much more even dark lighting to everything, so the white detail in the foreground is a bit more jarring and inconsistent with the rest of the piece. I do like the higher values and I understand what you're going for, but maybe the foreground could be brought down to a midtone? (like the attached pic)

Looks stiff as fuck. This technique you're doing of leaving a flat, grey sketched figure and coloring things bit-by-bit is a just poor way to draw. Instead of making a cohesive composition, it looks like a bunch of separate elements plopped down next to each other with little regard for unity.

I think you could benefit from thumb-nailing your values + composition before you jump into more details.

It's really hard to read desu.
Maybe doing a black & white thumbnail where you can read the shapes better might be a good idea. Also: the hand is kinda flat. Like you stamped some textures over the drawing.
Do the thumbnail excercise is really useful!

>>4657661
There are many issues with the anatomy. But most of all, it seems that you might be working in a really small piece of paper.
Try working bigger so you can visualize it better, remember not to hunch over and grab the pencil further from the point. So you can have a full view of the drawing.
Try to visualize or look for reference on the legs and arms, and specially the hands.
Keep it up!

The watermark is probably there so you have to buy a print from the artist and can't just print one yourself.

Like, start with the sketch, refine it, define base colors and only then start with the shadows, and so on.

There's a good line of action through the figure, but I feel like he should be doing more with the weapons, or perhaps his expression, to tell us more about his personality.
'Might give it a little more character to him.
I havent done digital in over a decade, but if you apply the basic rules of line weight- thinner lines towards facing towards of the light source and thicker, darker lines in the shadow- you should be ok.
Personally, I had an easier time doing linework in SAI, rather than Photoshop. SAI allows you to select individual lines and use a slider to make them bigger or smaller.

There might be an issue with the position of the forearm in relation to the arm/shoulder, or the arm is too short or the elbow is not going forward enough? I think this could really benefit from not using such pure black values. It just creates poor colors and an overall amateurish look. Part of the reason for this is that those stark, dark shadows would be caused by a lone light source in a completely dark room. The fact that you have a lighter, saturated blue midtone as your background contradicts this, and makes it look like it doesn't 'fit'.

Also, that brush is not doing you any favors. I recommend using something sharper and more opaque.

desu the outlines makes it look like those illustrator traced drawings. Plus the opacity in the brush makes it look ugly. Adding noise can't solve ugly brushwork

The values are alright tho, so it's a valid excercise. Don't trying to put you down. Keep going, maybe try the same excercise without the outlines. My two cents

Since some of the outside edges are so high contrast, it's weird that there are no similar transitions among the interior shapes. Makes it seem like a painted sculpture made of some soft material. Some hard transitions might be useful in the hair and eyelashes.

Pretty hard to go backwards in watercolor. Maybe add some translucency to the jellyfish by painting in her shoulder below it a bit? Some water prism effects would be nice but I wouldn’t know how to add it at this point, gouache might be too heavy handed. Gouache highlights could work in areas.

Been grinding hand anatomy this week and I think Im getting the hang of it. At least better than what I had before.

>> No.4675319

>>4675293
Overall I think you understand the concept of planes on the fingers and hands, but the shapes of the fingers need work. You use too many straight lines and dont connect the pinky side of the palm to the the little finger correctly. Once concept you can do is to contrast some of your straights with more curves, especially on the right ones. Also for those right hands, you didn't even attempt any thing that you couldn't just draw by looking at your own hand and drawing it real fast anyway, so trying to learn those from imagination wouldn't be that useful anyways.

Hey... I don't think the face is the issue here. It's your approach in general. It's generally not a good idea to start with flat shapes if you don't have proper anatomy or value structure established. Try to figure out the anatomy with values or line art (like I did. I'm >>4654694).

I'm not a highly functioning pro who can just jump in and do color/value/design/anatomy all at once and I'm guessing you're not one either so just split your workflow into parts that you can actually handle. It's not efficient but you just have to be humble about it and realize that it's a lot of work to create an appealing character design when you don't have the experience.

My workflow is probably going to be:

1. Gesture (line art)
2. Construction (line art)
3. Design (line art)
4. Refinement (line art) <This is where I'm at now with my piece >>4654694...
5. Lighting setup/BG design (painting)
6. Values (painting)
7. Color (colored painting)
8. Details (colored painting)
9. Effects (colored painting)
10. Final adjustments (Compositing)

You don't have to do line art if you don't want to and you definitely don't need to use all these steps, but you'd still have to paint your character instead of doing flat shapes like you are now. The biggest problem is that your character doesn't read at all without the colors atm. so work on that.

The rough textured brushstrokes work really well for the wolf, less so on the man's skin. Use the largest brush possible and don't noodle, make decisive strokes. Watercolor is not for cowards. If you want areas to blend, use wet-in-wet.
Might be a camera issue, but the skin looks rather yellow, like you mostly just used straight yellow ochre to render it. Mix it with some magenta for a more natural tone. (There are some more reddish areas of skin in the piece, but I'm honestly not sure if that's supposed to be color variation you layered on or blood from the injury. If it's color variation, add it to more places, if it's blood, be more bold with it.)
Some areas look like the ink from the outlines bled quite a bit, but others are perfectly fine. Not sure what's going on there.
All in all though really not bad for just starting out with watercolor, I've seen way worse.

This is really cute and comfy! I really like the idea too. My feedback would be:

- Try doing the same piece with a perspective grid so it feels more like the characters are actually sitting in 3D space. You've done a pretty good job with the animal but the girl feels kind of flat in comparison. (I should have taken my own advice as my own portrait is all fucked up now that I look at it)

- Do a separate T-posed sketch for yourself where you figure out what she'll be wearing. You could definitely get a nice result with what she's got now but I think you could push the design just a little bit more.

- Get some reference for her pose. Just take a photo of yourself or someone else if you can.

You could definitely just finis this piece as it. Just something to think about for the next one!
