I was thinking of doing Marshall Vandruff’s video course, but I think he said it doesn’t have assignments so I’d have to come up with some ideas for that on my own for the submissions. It doesn't make any sense. Tells me nothing about this character. The art itself is good, but the character design is just all over the place with no cohetion. Even the influences aren't clear. There's some nun, some Egyptian in there, some french accessorising from the 1700s, it just doesn't make sense. Other that "oh look nice flow-y drapey- stuff" and the pretty colours there's nothing there. The gorgeous art is wasted on such a bad design.

I did spend 8 hours on it. I timed it.
While an experienced artist who knows what lines to draw could easily do my drawing in less than an hour, I didn't know.
So there was tons of drawing, looking at the drawing, realizing it doesn't look right, erasing, and redoing until it looked alright.
Plus some of those hours were done past midnight, a time I like drawing since I am less judgemental of my work but also a time I am slower since I'm tired.

In the end, the goals I set are for me, and I have no interest in cheating myself.
I will avoid doing hour based goals because of the doubt they create over whether drawing X really did take Y hours to do.

Since she was supposed to be backlit by the moon, I wanted to shade her front dark.
Shaded with 2b, didn't like the look.
Then shaded with 4b, then 6b, then 8b until her front was a massive shiny black graphite patch.
Erased it all the best I could, but some graphite can't be pulled out.

The art of an adventure game: how that information is provided to you (even if it's the same information): a map rendered graphically, a map rendered with text, text sent through a TTY, maybe even literally read to you out loud with no visual interface at all.

They certainly can be. You only have a finite amount of time to work on a game, so you have to make trade-offs between the two based on how important each is to your e.g. genre or target audience.
Compare Dwarf Fortress to some of these AAA games with great visuals and relatively little substance.

See my above example regarding how an adventure game could be presented. The gameplay is not only independent of the visual experience, but may lack any visual experience whatsoever.
