I agree. A lot of people by getting better tend to deviate their old art style to a more elegant and seen as "good" by pretty much everyone, but will also lose its uniqueness. That's usually why people tend to describe old artwork as soulful. Of course most of those people are crabs that just want to shit on everyone, but a part of that is true

The very fact that you are asking makes it counter-productive to your goal of having soul, OP.
Soul comes from a conviction we have that the author was having fun while drawing and not only technically struggling.
By trying to FAKE soul, you take away the fun and lock yourself into the calculating cage.

You need to allow your brain to enjoy things, even if they look bad. Half (maybe it isn't 50/50, but the principle stands) of your art journey should be improving your skill, the other half improving your "creativity", which is basically fine-tuning your aesthetic sense, your taste.

The moment you're invested in making a single drawing work, you've lost the battle. Whenever you feel what you're doing has no soul (unless it's a purely technical study, then it doesn't need one), take a step back. Grab a second sheet of paper and doodle ideas. Roughly, quickly.
You will make a lot of bad drawings, but you're not trying to make a good drawing, you're trying to scavenge ideas that could be used on the real deal.

But you're not doing that mindlessly, just as an obligation. You have to do that with things that interest you. Some hairstyle you enjoy. Some stupid idea you had (Why not see how it looks? It's just scrap paper), a theme you want to explore more, so doing studies from Pinterest or some shit.

The more you keep flexing your taste muscle, the more your art will look like it has something new to say. Because it probably will. Right now you're shooting yourself in the foot by trying to follow a cake recipe without even having the same ingredients at hand.

Exposure to R07 renders fundiefags dumbstruck. They can't comprehend that life experience, sincerity, admiration, and love will make your drawings more memorable than any amount of practice drawing shapes in perspective.

They'll be sitting in their manchild nests wondering "do I still have time to make it?" until they're senile, while R07 has collaborated with all his idols, made multiple doorstoppers complete with soundtracks, brought tens of thousands to tears, and still has the motivation to slowly, steadily improve.

His art is soulful because he's a real human being who desperately needs to make art, and not a sadbrained loser who can barely muster the motivation to pick up the stylus.

More than 1/3 of all the boards were created from only a couple years before moot left to now. For the first ten years of 4chans existence around 30-40% of the website was dedicated to anime and other japanese media, and many boards not directly stated to be were created for that purpose anyway, or "other hobby boards for people who like anime". It's only since ~2014 that large numbers of posters who didn't watch anime started spreading throughout the site. ZUN's art appeals to me in the same way as R07. I've started making an inspiration folder for art like this, because it gives me a bigger burst of motivation to create more than anything else. I think it does come from trying to tackle a concept you might not be proficient in but you're determined to see it through, and making it appealing to look at even if it's essentially held together by duct tape
