I tried not to messy the board with my questions but apparently these questions don't belong in the beginner thread. I just came across the board and have a causal interest in learning to draw and was curious about a few things.

I just wanted to know what's the average span of time for someone to become decent at drawing. I'm thinking 6 to 12 months maybe? I'm older so I'm looking for a cutoff point, I don't waste too much time in pursuit of this if it won't bear any fruit. If I'm still crap within the allotted time I'll just move on.

Any older beginners here with some sort of success in art? Do you feel like you had a harder time learning than younger artist?

Thank you.

Jesus christ everytime I see a post asking stupid questions like this it russels my jimmies. It's like asking how much weight would I gain if I started eating, for fucks sake you're an idiot. It depends on how much you draw and being decent is subjective for everyone.

Hey, here's an idea, how about you start fucking drawing instead asking stupid questions and comparing yourself to others. If you're that serious about drawing, well you would start fucking drawing.

Fuck you and fuck your question. Cunt.

Well, you seem like someone who spends a lot of time on here shitposting instead of drawing yourself. Is your impotent rage how you vent your total incompetence? Are you a larper by any chance?

>What's the average span of time for someone to become decent at drawing?
The time frame is irrelevant, all that matters is how much time is actually spent actually drawing. About 1000 hours, drawing atleast 1 hour a day (though 5-7 is ideal), and you'll be atleast decent, provided you spend a lot of that time studying and drawing from reference. You can 'just draw', but this only works if you are constantly looking to see what you're doing wrong and drawing from reference and guides to fix it.
>I'm older so I'm looking for a cutoff point

Your age when you start drawing is irrelevant. It literally doesn't matter. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just memeing. Literally just start drawing, just make sure you're drawing with guides and references.

Most importantly of all, the sticky has a bunch of books by Andrew Loomis. Start from 'Fun with a Pencil.' This will teach you the basics of drawing and construction (which you will need for ALL drawing). Once you've done that, either study Loomis' other books or read something like pic related if you just want anime shit. Post in /beg/ constantly to find out how you can improve, then do what they tell you. Repeat this for 100 hours of drawing and you'll be atleast decent, no matter how old or autistic you are.

Sorry, I meant repeat this for 1000 hours of drawing. my bad.

>How long 'till I'm good?
Totally the wrong way to approach this
It's not about how much time, it's about how much focus.

>6 to 12 months maybe
You vastly underestimate what you're getting yourself into

What do you mean by drawing?
Literally just line art?
What's the goal here?

Dumb post. asking "how long will it normally takes to get good" is a legit question.

>>4629994
Unfortunately we don't know how long it takes people to get good at drawing because nobody really keeps track of what they do and we don't have reliable data. But my guesstimate based on anecdotal evidence is that if you practice and study seriously, in about 1000h you'll probably be able to produce drawings that some people other than yourself will enjoy looking at.

If you're only giving yourself a year, don't even bother.

It's a dumb question because the variable is too large. If someone practices 15 hours a day compare to someone who practices 1 hour a week then whose gonna get better faster? OP didn't even give any information on how many hours he can practice so it could take 6 month or 60 years.

People look for any information to make themselves feel better while all it does is give them a false sense of hope. Seeing others succeed in X amount of time make them feel they can do it themselves, but nah buddy everyone's different. Just because he can get decent in 6 months doesn't mean you can.

People have to stop living in their own world and see it clearly. Not everyone progresses equally and there are no black and white answer. That's why I told him, if he's serious about drawing then fucking draw instead of comparing himself to others because it's unproductive.

Then you can just give your answer in hours.

>People look for any information to make themselves feel better
No. People want to know the opportunity cost of getting into something, which is perfectly reasonable.

I really appreciate your answer. I'm willing to work on this hobby at least five hours a day. I think people are getting up in arms because they're assuming I've been drawing in the past. I just picked up a pencil last night.

<You vastly underestimate what you're getting yourself into
I learned how to play a piano in that time. I didn't mean in to seem disrespectful.

>>4630143
I'd the say the goal here is to draw objects and people competently.

>>4630143
Btfo? That pathetic outburst just tells me a few of the people here don't actually draw at all and are probably miserable failures who hang out around here to shit on others. I've seen far too stupider topics posted last night.. Really unnecessary. Tiny dick rage.
