OP actually did a better job animating compared to me so ignore my lazy wag.

Terms I will be using:
AA = anti-alias
Shadow shape = a general mass and shape defined by an area in shadow
Pillow shading = an undefined light source, specifically used for lighting done from the side of the camera/viewer

Alright lads here we go. I'm not just gonna touch on use of gradients, and use my dog-redo as a jumping board to touch on a variety of topics. First let's establish what pixel art is good for and what sort of goals you should have and how to achieve them. Pixel art, in most cases, is the down-sizing of a subject that requires simplicity to achieve readability. Some rules that apply in painting and character design apply here too. Your first goal is to be readable. This can be achieved in various ways. Contrast, colour, silhouette, and for pixelart specifically, outline. Sometimes context can also be important. Think for example of a table in terraria. Without the background with different furniture or a house the sprite itself might simply read as a square.

There's a couple of key things in pixel art that are very important. Because you're working on a small size you want your design to be readable. Don't be afraid to exagerate and play around with proprtions and really push your design. The goal of pixel art isn't to be eealistic. What OP did with the gradient is much closer to something you'd see irl. It makes his sprite look flat, especially because he hasn't created a light source. There's two key things you can use to make your sprites pop. Your colour, and your shadow shapes. Not all succesful sprites use these extensively but it's an easy way to make your work pop and be readable and fun to look at. Start thinking of your palletes and colour choices in terms of complementaries. Use gradiation sparingly and preferably in backgrounds, and try and keep your contrasts sharp so the sprite doesn't become muddy. (1/2)

>> No.4606903

>>4606889
(bleh, looking at my sprite now there's actually quite a few issues especially with tying in those greens and reds but whatever, moving on)

(2/2)

Think about your light source and use it to your advantage to block in big shadow shapes this will help your sprite feel like it has more volume and look less flat. Don't be afraid to be a bit bolt with your colours. If you're working with the colour red don't be afraid to shade your shafows in a subdued green, or deader purple, for example.

Because I rushed my dog redo s-rite I actually made several wrong choices. See how I sdded those harsh bits of fur on the belly or big sploches of lighter fur on the ear? This is unecessary texture that clutters my sprite. Be careful where and when to add this as it instantly draws your eye on a flatter sprite, or does the exact opposite for a busier one. Areas of interest, like the face or a weapon will contrast the rest of your design.

Think about why you're creating the sprite you're ceeating and what its purpose is. >>4603717
For example had a well-defined idea behind their work, and knew the vibe they were going for. See how he uses a lot of tecture on the clothes but leaves the face with a big light shape from the front? This creates hierarchy in the composition, allowing you to move from the horse's face, to the cup snd then the tablet. >>4603569 What is the purpose of OP's dog? Yes, it's a cute dog wagging its tail, but my eye doesn't know where to look, the handling of the entire dog is the same, there are no shapes to guide my eye or light to tell me in what sort of space this dog exists. Don't be afraid of hard contrasts. Because of the small size they are your friend, amd will instantly give your viewer more information about what you're trying to convey.

well, first things first, why do you have two marginally shades of grey for the hair for very minimal shading that could easily be the shade of blue in your ref image?

not this anon, but,
putting artwork/a couple images from the book on the gumroad (instead of just a link to the website, which has them) would help a lot. Initially i missed the website link, since it's also at the bottom of the page (under a note: section, no less) and wanted to see the artist's work for credibility. I googled Michafrar and came up with his twitter, which was a bunch of retweets and non-pixel art. the link to his official website from twitter was a tumblr, with no pixel art on it. From there, i went to his pixiv, which had SOME pixel art, but it's all in japanese.

I suggest lospec since if you're just starting out it's got plenty of free resources, even if they're a bit outdated they get the message across in comparison to pixel logic, depends on what you want to invest in while trying out pixel art.
either that or filter through the pixeljoint forums.

Would pixel logic be useful for someone with a couple years of experiance or is it more of a kicking off point for those just starting?
I know it's cheap however i've looked into other resources beforehand to try and gain other artist perspectives, to only tune out once i realize it's aimed towards beginners.

i would start again, because this doesn't look appealing.
it looks like you've used the shape tool to do your construction but you took those lines and ran with it, not to mention you're banding your shading unnecessarily and tightly, the lighter tones are just washed up.
try to work with actual reference, and build or find a pallet you can work with.

go over all of these again and look at your lineart, you've got jagged and dog legged edges where it in no way calls for them, and your antialiasing doesn't soften curves like it should, it looks haphazard in places.

consider at this scale and with a minimal color pallet, your lineart is going to get a lot of scrutiny. also consider making more defined shapes or a less compact silhouette in some of these so they read easier

So I was studying the art of the cards in the SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters games and noticed something and want your opinion.
Which do you like more, the cards of the first or second game?
I noticed the first game has mo variety in poses and expressions at the cost of being more chibi and having bigger eyes for both male and female characters. (cont.)

While all if not, most of the cards in the second game feel very similar all of them, having similar composition which is the character from a side or near side view and their arm, hand or some object super close to you in your face, most of the time the arm or object taking the most space in the canvas but the sprites being bigger means more variation in the faces and expressions, now with clear differences between male and female faces.

the first game, i like the variation more, and the fact that they're chibi doesn't matter to me, if anything it sets the tone of it better and adds to a more dynamic nature.
i'm not too into the second on because some of them where just translations of older sprites or artwork, the first game feels cultivated in a way

My dudes, what's the best method of creating animated game assets for indie games?

Raw pixel art (Metal Slug etc) seems like the most time consuming / ineffective, because you have to think about every fucking pixel.
Raw bone animation (Spine 2D) is the most effective, but looks cheap and soulless.

I'm thinking higher res pixel art (like Blasphemous) aided by very subtle bone animation.
Talk me out of it before I spend hundreds of dollarinos on very specific software and workshops.

dude just aim lower than metal slug.
you probably could have a rig to aid you in making sprite animations that you go in and detail over but at that level it's a toss up between if it's going to be worth it since at that scale you're still thinking about every pixel.

i understand the difference between 3d and 2d and but i struggle to understand why him and you by extension don't have some kind of level balancing.
you can chip away at digital art the same way you chip away at pixel art, you could easily go lineless and have a good semblance of style, that balances in turn with pixel art.
maybe that valley just feels odd to me due to the zero attempts to fix simple line art mistakes that don't feel like they're there for stylistic reasons

You need to make the gameplay work first. What kind of game is it? The more information the animation needs to convey, the more rewarding high fidelity is. SF III Third Strike and Fatal Fury: Mark of The Wolves have crazy detailed and painstakingly tweaked animation. Something like Sam and Max: Freelance Police or Monkey Island doesn't need as much movement or polsih.
