IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES - try ~1000px, <1.1mb

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

if you're having trouble with finding the center of a sphere then the problem isn't anything related to memory and more a lack of fundamental basics. you just need to keep practicing until you get over this first hump. it's a pretty decent hump and there's quite a few like it.

stop blaming your memory and this "i sleep and forget everything" bs. all it does is redirect the blame from something you have control over to something you don't.

I drew this from imagination and it took about 3 hours. How can I make it look better? I feel I'm at a point where no matter how much more effort I put into it I won't be able to make it look any better. What should I study now?

Maybe it's because I started drawing as a kid and took art classes every year, but to me things like lighting, perspective, and angle come naturally. You just look at the object/person in your mind and see how the light hits the different parts of their face. In fact drawing from a reference doesn't help because you still have to be able to "see" the rays of light in your mind. To me drawing the fundamentals just comes naturally. I can draw a killer plane/car/house/any object. Now anatomy

newbie here starting out with right side of the brain, currently on chapter 8 with the basic unit and perspective.
My main concern right now is that I'm slow as fuck. I'm ok with grinding, but I'm trying to avoid being one of those "I've been doing dailies for 2 years and I still suck" anons, and I feel like right now I'm working harder not smarter
Is 5 hours for a simple environment like this acceptable if I'm only on my 3rd week? If not, what else am I supposed to do, just grind igor, chairs and boxes? I thought these right side of the brain exercises were how I work on fundies

and smaller questions
should I start out with bigger shapes/outlines and fill in details later even when drawing from reference?
Is it ok that I just avoid drawing soft edges for now (e.g. the trash bag, basket, light fixture) or am I fucking myself?
What do I do when I fuck up my lines? Erase it and try again (prioritize correctness) or just keep going with the fucked up line (finish the drawing), because doing both leads to this 5 hour long chicken scratch shit

I didn't like my first attempt, and yesterday was a bad day for me so I kind of rushed it a bit.Today I decided to go back and start over and see if I could at least make something that looked somewhat passable. There's already a few issues with it, like I noticed I made the face way too long. But otherwise I'm satisfied that it's at least an improvement. This attempt took around two hours, and I spent a little bit studying the old attempt for what I did wrong.

>> No.4600823 [DELETED]

So, surely artists are lying when you ask them how they learned and they reply with "I just drew lole", right? Everyone here has implied that being impossible or entirely unfeasible.

But if it WERE feasible, if one of you fuckers who "just drew" and got good is in here, what exactly does "just drawing" entail? Copying references? Watching other people draw? I'm assuming you just skipped the bowls of fruit and the busts of helios for fundamentals and perspective and just gleaned it from looking at other people's art, right? How long did it take you? What did you learn from, if not a book or a class or guides on fundamentals?

I think looking at so much art in my life and practically staring at anime art for over 5 years has helped me get as good as I do know, I just kind of visually store it in my head if that makes sense.
but I always have had some talent I used to draw a lot when i was 5-8 and did pretty decent stuff for my age.

not a lot of artists on /ic/ started drawing as young as I did with some natural talent so they probably think that drawing loomis heads over and over for 8 years is the only way to get good.
plus consuming others media really did help me learn how to draw because I went wow I want to draw that and subconsciously applied to my own work.

More gestures, I'm on a roll today. Also just like with the arms I started thinking the legs really start around the gluteus medius muscles, even though they're technically higher than the joint. I fucked up bad.
I'm drawing the "a drawing of the face" instead of "drawing the face itself".
This is discouraging...

what you guys think?
Where should i go from here?
start from drawing lines and boxes?
Or find more faces and keep drawing?

/ic/ is a little out of touch in this area. The majority of artists do not take anatomy, perspective, or other fundie study terribly seriously. And honestly, it's the same in most professions. Lots of coders don't write the best, most efficient code. A lot of people slap together whatever works. And as long as you roughly know what you're doing and are experienced, you can usually get by with that attitude.

To think that every digital artist making moderately popular art spent 1000 hours grinding loomis heads and gesture/values study is kind of out of touch. I

Two things!!!

The first is that you are definitely doing what you described. You're drawing an idea of what you are seeing. You need to focus on some of the fundamentals of training your hand to draw what your eye is seeing. It's a much more fundamental skill, and honestly one that requires grinding it out to train yourself for it. Keep going, and it'll help.

And Two!

Your drawing is also instantly recognizable as Anton. While it's not the most technically proficient, you got his smug ass face and even the highlights in the hair. If it were a comic panel, it'd be more than sufficient to get across what you want. You really should keep going, you're a lot further in the right direction than you think!

I know it's a simple standing pose but it looks stiff. Keep practicing gesture.
Legs look too symmetrical. Draw more of them from many angles, pay attention to their asymmetry.
Hips look kinda narrow, torso looks flat. Read chapters 1-6 from Huston's book if you haven't, or watch his lectures.
I'm not a fan of soft brush and would suggest you start with cel shading once you get a better feel for the 3d forms you're drawing.
I don't know much about lines but try decomposing contours into as big as possible curves and draw each of those in a single stroke. Maybe disable the size jitter and zoom in when doing your lines so you have room to move your arm idk
Study artists you like and see how they simplify the body when stylizing.

I find that when I tried to reconstruct loomis' books faithfully I failed and my heads looked ugly. When I didn't worry about a faithful reproduction and just focused on feeling the basic shapes and experimenting, my heads turned out better. I'm also aware I'm using too much mickey mouse eyes.

I would start with Keys to drawing if absolute beg, then Huston's book and Hampton on the side. Haven't read Framed Ink but if you already have a clear idea of what you want to draw and are in a hurry to get your ideas out of your head my guess is that you could start there, but it probably would be better to read it after Huston's.
