Well, when I was a kid I thought Yugioh cards looked impressive, realistic, very masterfully done. (Talking about Gen1 stuff)

Nowadays I see most of them were pretty wonky, and even the epic legendary Blue Eyes White Dragon is just weird.
The artist still get props for being creative and good at creating memorable designs.

I was really interested in his style going another way then he started drawing all his "weird women" and seemed to stay in a comfort zone. It inspired me a lot with the ambient occlusion and shapes coming from a 3D modeling background which made rendering make more sense in painting. I really liked these two old images of his, saved them when I started in 2017, but never got anything else like it.

Nah, he had a lot of variety on themes (from robots to dragons to monsters to objects to people to Egypt to jungle) and used varied colors that helped the design. I remember Yugioh designs way better than I remember, say, Beyblade or Power Rangers monsters/megazords, even though there were fewer to share screentime than Yugioh's cast in the hundreds. And I was also very into those other series.

Look at this polymerization card, I will never forget these colors. I still don't know what Monster Reborn is (a sword? a coffin?) but I can see it if I close my eyes, as a little blue screaming cyclops sea monster.

Go look at the actual artwork for Monster Reborn (not the American one) and it's very boring in comparison.
You can't just cherrypick the best and most iconic cards like BEWD but ignore the fact that most early art looked like archaic shit that abused the dodge/burn tool. Cards nowadays have the quality on the left.

And there is a variety of themes...due to the nature of the meta (going by subtypes nowadays to push card $sales) they have to be themed...

Missing the point again, as designs can be good/efficient even if the art sucks. (And vice-versa).
And remember what the thread is about? Art that you USED to think was good and now you don't. So no point on playing Sherlock Holmes on something I am declaring to find bad.

akashiro/starbottle on twitter. I used to orbit her hard 8 years ago. Her art is really just okay at best, I just liked it a lot more when I was a teenager. She hasn't improved at all in the years I forgot about about her and it's really sad. She's 28 now I think, still lives with her mother, still has meltdowns on twitter and plays fucking gachashit all day. I think I'm more disappointed by her mental regression and her being a womanchild rather than her stale art. I'm way ahead of her now in terms of skill.

I did buy something off her shop a while back just to support her a bit, and it came with a handwritten thank you card. It added a very nice personal touch, I jacked off to it a bunch of times.

I can't quite understand taste differences for old artists that haven't kept up with the times. A lot of artists that were doing 90s concept art in traditional made the leap to digital no problem but it left some people behind. The OP is not clear enough and people are clearly seeing it as being better than other artists.
Someone you used to look up to but you got better.
There are two ways to interpret that, got better THAN or as you got better you no longer look up to because you can see their shortcomings, the latter requires a lot of inferring.
Too vague to tell for certain but the fact that people are interpreting it as the first shows what people are comprehending, the fact that the artist and the person are being directly compared gives credence to the first interpretation.

Im going to ignore the 'but you got better" vagueness.

Ataruman for sure. One of my OG favorite artists from when I started drawing a few years ago. I love his poses and how well he understands appeal/ exaggeration/ etc. He even draws boys pretty well. I love his coloring, everything, etc, but I swear to god his faces are starting to melt. His faces were never super solid; they always felt sort of flat and like the features were pasted on and out of proportion, but I feel like they took a dive. It's so weird to me because his anatomy is perfect otherwise. It makes me wonder if he just hates faces and only wants to draw sexy bodies and clothes.

All of that being said, I still really love his work.

Nah, it was more because it wasn't supposed to become this big, and once it became they started hiring skilled (but soulless) artists.

If you watch the first seasons of Yugioh in Japanese, you will realize how cheap it actually was, barely any soundtrack and subdued voice acting.

4kids or whoever adapted it to the West were the ones to add all that over the top rock'n'roll, some more dramatic shots and whatnot, giving it a "Pokémon treatment" in order to make it look bigger than it was. Card game shows in Japan are one-every-season thing, and while it did get popular in Japan as well, the phenomenon in the West was pretty remarkable.

My tastes in art never really changed as I learned more about drawing. But maybe I have an unconventional palate. Even supposed "cringey bad deviantart" pictures sometimes can be charming and cute. Kind of like an "unconventionally attractive" person. Sure, there are flaws. But there's still an appeal. Pic related is something cute from pixiv I like even if it's not technically impressive.
