IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make YOURSELF feel proud.

READ THE STICKY if you're new or need guidance.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES - try ~1000px, <1.1mb

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

Yep, I get the feeling the thread would look very different if everyone was using refs.
I started doing it because Asukafag went from /beg/ doodling to somehow doing better drawings than my imagination ones, all thanks to using refs. I'm a salty loser like that kek. Doesn't mean that's my "real" level, or at least that's what I think based on the disparity between Asukafag imagination vs refs drawing, dude draws like a grayscale concept artist if you give him a photo to reference.

thank you

in case you might be interested, in that drawing i first lightly toned the paper with the side of a soft pencil and rubbed it with a paper towel to make the base look smooth. having a base is a little trick to avoid shading that much later. after making a sketch with an hb pencil i used an eraser for the highlights and a 7b pencil for the darker areas. i tried to not be afraid to make some areas really dark

i believe one should be able to achieve good results with a single pencil as well. i wish i could give you better advice but i'm still new to all this

>Do you just draw or are you doing studies
The closest thing to studies are the drawings Ive posted as justfuckmyshitup.png of legless shotas with no forearms, or faceless shotas with bodies, both of which I draw over and over 100% from imagination. I dont allow myself to use transform tool on those and instead of fixing mistakes I try to draw the next one better. But with the wyde picture and others, I do allow myself transform tool and redrawing over translucent layers.. And it took me several hours to draw that wydeawake

The way the head connects to the neck connects to the shoulders connects to the arms, as well as what the scapulas and collar bones are doing, is very complicated to me so I try to grind this in between random drawings. I think about this a lot while drawing and I've yet to start focusing on other parts of the body. It's overwhelming.

I see a lot of mistakes in the proportions. The torso of the top third sketch is too long, the neck of the top middle one is to the side and the leg lengths of first and last sketch are off. Additionally, you can always put more motion into the rithm of the arms otherwise they look quite stiff. Other than that they seem pretty well made, I don't know your sources but the angles of the limbs seems good and also I love the motion of the body's midsection. But in the end, a gesture drawing is only as good as the finished piece, they are just a tool.

My interpretation:

In this statue, there is a pointy cylinder shape on top. There is also another cylinder shape with the ornate window cut in.
The top cylinder is roughly 3/5 the size of the lower cylinder.
The cylinders are aligned vertically along their central axes.

What i notice it that your lines don't quite match the form.
Look at my drawing of the ball and how the lines don't just go straight down but vanish behind the ball like they would wrap around. The one where you made the mistake of going down in a straight lines is the second from the left in in the bottom row.
The best circle and the one we are working next on is the second one from left in the upper row. I want you to slap a sausage on it ( any way you like) and put some lines over the sausage showing us the form of it.

But how is it easily differentiated exactly? If a 2D drawing has some minor 3D qualities then is it still symbol or is it a shape? I've lurked here a bit and I've seen a lot of things get labeled symbol even though they didn't seem like such, so I am curious as to whether there is a distinct difference to be made here and a way to identify if something is symbol or not.

It's good. But don't forget the form-lines on the sausges. (Or worms).
Always think about the ball as an actual 3-D form and the worms wrapping around it too. The worms itself are also 3-D forms!
Now i want you to learn this until it looks right to you.
Draw your own forms. Make them up like i did (pic) and have fun with them. And always draw lines around them like they are 3D. Try to be as accurate as possible. Spend more time on a single form until it looks right. You will get faster at it.

when people in here say you are just drawing symbols it means that what you drew isn't respecting any perspective, making it flat, like when you write something, the letters aren't in perspective. but, even with letter you can put them in perspective, by skewing the image (which still results in something flat) or giving them tridimensionality (like in those 3d letters you usually see in graffiti)
form would be a better word than shape for what i mean though. and, yes, forms are symbols too, but with tridimentionality, if you go by "symbols" meaning, but it's better to use those symbols than :^) symbols for a face

the thing about heavily stylized drawing is the viewer can't know for sure if you drew thinking and respecting perspective and forms. although i can see that the hair isn't great, or the eyes don't align, the drawing by itself is nice enough that you could get away by saying it was on purpose for style, the problem happens when it's not the style but the artists lack of skill, reason why most people will tell someone learning to avoid stylized drawings, so they can easily see what they lack

Don't get discouraged by all the red lines (Some of them show whats good). This is what i would add to your drawing.
If anyone would like to give some tips is welcome or if someone wants to improve me even more.
Try doing more clean lines around the big worm in front.
Like i said >>4583611 try to draw cleaner and lighter. It helps to fix some errors.
And before you draw too complex forms try to make it easy by following the form of an object rather then breaking it. (The one worm wrapping backwards.)

That's kind of the problem, and why I am looking for this kind of feedback. When I was younger (like 10-13) I fell for the "stylization is all you need" meme, and only sometimes practiced realism in art classes, and that was about it.
Recently I noticed my styilized drawings are subconsciously improving yes, but they are improving in aspects that are not needed, whereas stuff that I need to be improved are not.

And so nearing the age of 20, I realized I need to practice realism (and plus, I gained a newfound appreciation for realism as a whole). Problem is, I don't want to 100% start from scratch unless I have no choice, so I kinda wanna get an idea of what fundamentals I am already alright with and which ones I can skip, or if I genuinely need to start from scratch unfortunately. And that's the kind of thing I wanna know, before I start to relearn stuff.
