Why the fuck isnt there a drawthread general?

This is now the drawthread general.
Post your current drawing here regardless of level, faggots critique and you tell them to post their work, they dont respond. Have fun.

i thought that's what /ic/ is. short of a few people who haven't realized they're too good to be here, everyone here is shit and the ones who get good, leave. /int/ is full of people who have barely made it past /beg/. /alt/ is more begs and those 5 or so people I mentioned earlier. /ic/ dunning kruger central. begs all the way down. there's no structure, no progress, everyone's a fucking crab. this is one of the few scenarios that doesn't work with the anonymous structure. you need to know who's critiquing you otherwise it bears no weight.

the only decent threads are the artbook and course threads and, again, they're only relevant to begs.

Seriously though I dont really know why I piss people off so much when I post my work. The only reason I keep coming back here is that the rest of the internets art communities are a total circlejerk where no one does anything but act like youre Gods gift to art no matter what you do. You are correct but I personally see no issue in doing both, no matter what level I am I always have and always will do both exercise grinding and finished work. Thats just how I am, means Im neither burning out with boredom nor stagnating and sucking my own dick inside a comfort zone, besides, attempting advanced things means I become aware of the issues I run into, I learn a lot this way, so youre totally right I do need to grind perspective structure ect but im not going to stop painting whatever I want just because there are errors in it, if I did so I would not enjoy art.

Nice colors on the mug, but the ellipses definitely need some work, they're pretty wonky. Draw some cubes/cylinders in perspective, and do some ellipse drawing exercises (like drawabox type shit). You've definitely got some potential, just gotta nail those basics first.

very nice atmosphere and composition anon. I really like this.
Some of your lines are angled incorrectly and do not follow the perspective. The most visible example is the phonebooth, almost all the lines both horizontal and vertical do not agree with each other, making the booth look crooked.

I like your attitude anon, it's the right one to have if you're gonna make it. I think when its finished it will look great. I know you don't want circlejerk and want actual criticism so if you want my advice I'd fix that strap on her back as rn It looks loose af. Also try and be more accurate with your lines and avoid "chicken scratch" I know this is hard and sometimes seems unnecessary if you're going to remove it later but it will help you in the long run as getting lineart precise is key to portraying the forms in the finished render (if you're going that far with this).

I think you have to put in more colors. Instead of shading with darker values, shade with different hues in slightly darker values. And include different saturation levels if you can, life is a bunch of hues all over the place, I think we can notice that something's off when we don't see that on human skin specially. That's why it looks like clay.

Looks slick, but I think you should push yourself harder. This is obviously well inside your comfort zone when you could have really worked on something that actually challenges you; full background, water surface effects, even just making the phone more rounded and harder to draw.

>>4577774
There's a bunch of guides out there, but the general principle is to mix a load of colours into skin tones. Purples, blues and greens in shaded areas, yellows and greys for thick skin, reds for thinner places. Look up what sub-surface scattering is and keep the shadows lighter than they would be on normal materials. Try to get away from pink; white skin is generally more of a mix of white and orange.

>>4577494
Stocks are always useful. The third point of contact makes a big difference to stability. SMGs have stocks, even some pistols (and I bet more would have them if they weren't illegal most places), short rifles should absolutely have stocks.

>>4576836
I want to hate it for being so current-year, but there is actually some soul to it. You need to get stuff like the nose ring and back of the choker exactly right though; that crisp style is unforgiving.

>>4576696
Got some charm, but also a lot of issues. You need to follow what you love, but be disciplined too. Keep the stylization for warm-ups and train realistic anatomy for now.

>>4576558
You need to learn to work rougher and faster. Use thicker brushes and block in distinct areas of light and dark. Cut into the shapes and push them around. At the moment, most of those soft shaded areas look like pillow shading. Don't fuck about with that; either shadow or not.

>>4576428

>> No.4581331

>>4579580
>Tell me more about those weaknesses.
First and most obvious, it isn't a completed work. You did the 'fun' bits (I suspect the bits you found easiest) and then just didn't bother with the rest.

That hand actually looks really brilliant as it is; if the whole piece was at that quality then it would be a good painting.

The face is a 'polished turd' where you have spent too long blending everything together smoothly and not nearly enough defining the features. You could have shadows from the hair really demonstrating the form if you were willing to put in the effort. As it is, you have one line on the eyebrow which just vanishes and nothing else. There's no sense of bone structure. I know it is some kind of cartoon or video game bullshit, but you aren't at the level where you can actually do stylised work yet. Keep grinding realism.

Hair has been half-finished, then apparently abandoned when you ran into trouble. Do not give up at that stage. Push into defining forms. Keep working at it until it doesn't suck.

Ear is obviously just not done. Would have taken two minutes to at least bring it to the same level as the nose.

Eyes are over-detailed relative to the rest. For some reason every /beg/ artist (and God knows that included me) starts off doing OK eyes and fuck all else good. Grind the parts you can't do well, ignore eyes for a while.

Mouth is half-way between symbol drawing and actual drawing. Need to really grind anatomy and defining forms there. Look how it seems connected to the rest of the face on the underside, but then almost floats above the surface on the top edge.

Torso, shoulder, clothing, all not done. I know it gets boring, but if you fill the entire canvas and draw everything there, you will improve faster.

Correct! Yeah, hands look a bit garbage though. Usually I sketch something out loosely and then I start going over it piece by piece with neater lines. I always leave hands last because I'm a handlet. I was actually going to push it out with the base pink colour and minimal shading though. You think it should push it more?

This might seem counter-productive to the style, but try studying references, or drawing it in different styles.
Some things I notice:
Snow on roof looks like it has a sharp horizontal edge. I think it should be rounded or vertical.
Snow on ground seems to rise in sharper peaks than snow should, unless there is something under it (in which case, define what is under there, maybe some snow-free vertical surfaces).
Ends of the logs at the front should be in deeper shadow, possibly lost entirely.
Smoke probably shouldn't come to a point, let it go all the way off screen. Probably doesn't need to be shaded.
Chimney look suspiciously like wood.
Wood looks very brown considering the lighting. Could be even more desaturated.
Trees in background seem too detailed. Could be simplified to big blobs of snow and darkness.

I think your issue is that while the arms are obviously deformed for the sake of style, they still need to both be deformed in the same way. At the moment the right arm has an elongated humerus while the left arm has an elongated forearm. You need to move the elbows to be at the same point on each arm.
Other issues:
Hair doesn't make sense to me at the moment. She's got some kind of braid running diagonally across her forehead? Or is that a strap from her hat?
Mouth is doing that classic cartoon thing of looking like a symbol floating on the face rather than a hole cut into it. I think the main problem area is on her right side.
Sword doesn't seem to be on the right plane considering how she is swinging it. Needs to rotate so there is edge alignment along the direction of the blow.
You need to figure out that foot. Having a good strong push against the ground / some scenery would give a real sense of power rather than dull weightless flying through the air.

>>4582223
I see the effort but tonally it's a mess (I'm not saying that to discourage you). It's actually easy to fix. In short, compositionally speaking, in your picture there should be areas of rest and areas of detail, and in your case areas that should be a rest for eye are filled with detail (background has cross hatching). They are sitting in the dark, you shouldn't be afraid of all black big areas. Everything is midtone and all the details are lost because there's too many of them. Even white parts don't pop because there's not much contrast around them. With a dimly lit scene like this light source should be easily identifiable (pic rel is more extreme but you get the point). You should mix up white silhouettes on black background with black on white, ie could have made a guy in a black clothes pop out on lighter background and his white head come out more on darker part. Overall, either do the scene in a way of pic related, or have it compositionally play more with silhouettes. How to do it, is do a sketch first in just white, grey, black, not doing any cross shading. You've put effort in all these details but what's more captivating to eye is tonal composition. You make only crucial details pop and omit the unimportant rest. Especially you should avoid details in shade, as it works against creating illusion of space. As a guide you should decide if your picture is dark or light, or at least decide which tone is dominant. If you take 50% of black and 50% is light your picture is gonna be tonally confusing, but if you make black a majority, grey minority and a bit of white for most important details it's gonna be more tonally captivating

>> No.4584174

>>4582223
>>4584165
So in short conclusion, if you plan your work tonally you may omit most of the details, save time and by working with contrast make your composition more captivating. Because right now the person looking at the pic is lost, doesn't know on what to stop an eye on

Other than that I appreciate the reference to Ariel's thingamabobs with the phone and the underwater light shimmer is a nice touch as well.
Even the decision to have the colors more skewed towards an underwater blue gamut is wise which brings focus to the contrasting phone and the storytelling.

I wrote more about tonal distribution and readability than pure composition, which was clearly rushed.
The characters in my example are easily distinguishable and still would be if you turned it into grayscale. If you could record how the eye observes the picture it would move from face to face without distractions. You don't end up being confused about some random body parts, suddenly realizing there's another character hidden etc. The composition itself is basic but reads well. The shadows hug characters and make their form readable. It's not the one and only solution, he could have come up with different tonal compositions that could've been readable too, what I'm saying is that he spent three days drawing details of every character while it only hurt readability of the picture and made everything look mostly like a same tone

This is a weird piece. It kind of looks almost AI generated, with that weird transition from clean and mechanical to uncomfortably organic on the top of the plane. The heavy edge lines which are lost in areas of deep shadow (like the bottom of the tires) reinforce the effect; exactly the places an AI would not think to put the edge that a human knows should be there.
The design details, the confident forms, the smooth flow of the lines, the subdued palette and the subtle texture combine to make it a good piece in many ways, but the top of the image has a lot of issues. There seem to be many wrinkles in the surface without any purpose and those (eyes? lights? lenses? pustules?) on the nose look crudely pasted on.

What the fuck is even happening here? The girl with the knife seems to be sitting down next to the PoV character, but there's some kind of big fight going on... does she not realise what is happening behind her, or is she recovering from being knocked to the ground or something? Why is she holding her knife in a really weird way? Why does she seem so expressionless in this apparently dramatic moment? What is she meant to be wearing? Some kind of t-shirt and culottes?
Is the guy by the door shooting an arrow at her? It seems to be too low considering their relative positions.
What's with the couple falling out of the window? Why is there a big square window there which seems really easy to fall out of?
Do your fantasy buildings have random buckets of fire attached to their walls? I know that every fucking fantasy movie (and quite a few historical ones) ever has gas-fuelled buckets of fire attached to walls all over the place, but it honestly looks pretty stupid.

here some problem I noted. please note i don't pretend to be super good, but I think that can help you.

0) please fix your chicken scratching (yes my red lines are not super clean either). have some confidence in line.

1) if the pillar is extruded from the wall at the bottom, it should be the same at the top. this kind of detail really add a lot to sell the space when they are consistent.

2) your character should be positioned on the perspective plane. use the Michaelis rhombus to help orient the ass and spine and give spatial indication.use the hair to reinforce the gesture. use highlight to reinforce form. please think of where left arm and leg connect. the foot can give ton of information on the orientation of the leg, even if you can't see the leg.

3) as other have said your vanishing points are close, which means that you will have ungraceful distortion. it's good practice to put them outside of your drawing. the further away, the less you will have to think about the distortion. every object should be constructed following your perspective. the pot of the bottom is in the distorted zone and almost need the introduction of a third vanishing point to be correctly constructed. the real question is why did you put a pot on the foreground at the center of the picture. there probably a better composition.

4) keep in mind the orientation of head and face, and build your body proportionally to your head. the spine, scapula and Michaelis rhombus all help you build and orient the back. for the belts, in doubt, choose a simple approach that reinforce the shape. again visual clue add up and really sell the space for you. also your back is a bit short and your arms a bit too fat. for the sword, don't complicate your life with a weird perspective, put the sword on the other side and clarify the situation (sword are generally on the non dominant side anyway).

hope that was of some help.

I got told to not post in /beg/ so I suppose this is the right thread?

Anyway, I need critique specifically on the values. I look at this piece and can't help but feel there is something very wrong about it - and I'm guessing it is the values, since the proportions seem in place and also the head structure. Also, how do you organize your values on a portrait painting? I feel like I've rendered details before getting a solid grasp for the whole thing and this is fucking me right now (like the eyes and lips).
And how do you finish a piece? And I mean the refining part - how do you know which edges are supposed to be blended and which to be kept?

If you've the eye for any other inconsistencies however, I'd appreciate you point them out.

here some idea to improve your eyes. I was lucky to have a somewhat similar reference.

1) don't be afraid to show the eyelids (both top and bottom), they help a lot to position the eyes.

2) the eyebrow, even when cut, should be used to suggest the arcade of the eye socket.

3) the pupil give the direction of the gaze and should appear clearly. when looking at something the pupil are slightly turned inwards towards the nose. woman sometime tend to have a slight divergent strabismus (men tend to have the opposite) so perhaps your model had one too. if that the case, use the pupil to counterbalance it a bit for a natural look.

4) the upper lid of the eye cast a shadow that should be noticeable and tend to fuse with the iris. makeup might change the darkness around the eye, but that shadow is always here.

5) eye lash are great to reinforce the roundness of the eyes.

6) looking at your three drawing, you tend to draw your eyes too big, which in turn make them bulgy. keep that in mind and don't forget the eyelid

on that note, I'm curious, do you have big eyes ? my drawing teacher told me that we often tend to put detail of our own face into portrait (and sure enough I have to watch for my big eyes and non existent chin on every portrait I do).
