It helps alot to think about each panel as a shot from a movie. Try to study some shot composition and imagine youre the director of a film trying to get the audience to see something specific. After that id suggest setting up the panels less rigid. Think, "is my audience reading this on a phone? laptop? paperback?" and adjust the panels in a way that pushes attention where you want it to go. Like a rail car.

Thanks for the crit. I tried answer some of those. Had time change from me going to and from work and tried set up that I work across from my house. Because a couple of you didn't get it it's supposed to be me going to work getting stopped by the gardai, doing random shit like weeding because there's fuck all customers and then going home. It's supposed to show the real situation where I'm earning less while working that my girlfriend is getting from the government every week because the cinema she works in is closed. It's a 3 page comic so I wouldn't really call the gardai or my girlfriend a main character but there are 3 in it all together. Now that you hopefully get the context are there any straight forward things I could change to put it across better or is it more to just keep those in mind more next time. Im in the very early stages and was wondering if it's better to plan out big scenes and build inbetweens leading up to them (pretty much focussing the story on select, detailed images and the rest kinda flowing towards them) or if I should design every thumbnail or page as it's individual scene.

Right now I am leaning towards
>Set important moments and flesh em out a bit
>Lay em in a page, design pages with minor story flow before and after it
So lets say I have X stepping out of a plane on page 1 and I want to have a big impact shot of him getting slammed in the head by a skeleton hooligan as the next big impact shot. I develop these to a presentable stage and after focus on filling in the gaps
Would this be a proper way to do it? I feel like I get lost in the details and unimportant bits and I design the story page by page and spend way too much time thinking way too hard about the minor thumbnails instead of the bigger picture. I still don't really have something I feel comfortable with pushing towards the presentable stage.

To add another question to this, how do you guys deal with designs?
I want to have some characters that I'll have fun drawing long term so I am mostly focused on that but do you just say "fuck it lets go with this" after a while and develop it as the story goes and maybe add in minor changes that you would've liked in hindsight later on during a moment of peace or do you really hold on to your original design that you decided to go with?

American comics usually have way too much text, and bad paneling, while manga is more like a movie. American paneling is very static compared to manga.

Manga also has more inner dialogue, about inner conflicts, while american comics are more superficial, more about detailed art, rather than about "soul".

murican comics usually have more panels and more words. while japanese pages sometimes just have a couple panels in a page. this is cause murican ones are printed on bigger paper and there are only 22 pages per pricy comic compared to a manga so they have to fit more story into less pages

>> No.4558637

>>4558583
Americans also have way more time. They often can spend a whole week on a single page, while mangaka often have to churn out 20 pages per week.

That's why manga has a lot more tempo and a much better flow, while american comics feel more like an illustration with text.

Oo, well anyway mate I hope that you *do* get around to making kick ass motorcycle fight art. In terms of writing, I would recommend figuring out some sort of prompt that you can write from. Basically, you need to figure out one thing after another until the whole story's tapestry really just weaves itself.

For starters, you'll have motorcycles fighting. The logical questions that you then have to answer is "who is fighting, where are they fighting, why are they fighting", and so on. With each new element that you create, you'll need to keep asking questions until you've got some semblance to a story.

Then, figure out characters, if you haven't already. Give them simple, easy to understand motivations, and some good personality traits, and one bad one, for example.

From there, you'll be pretty easily able to place your characters in the arcs of your story. Now that you've placed them, figure out what they'll say. Conversations can seem really hard, but as long as what they say makes sense for their character and is something that's semi logical, it should be fine.

From there, start drafting models, figuring out settings, frames, etc. More detail stuff. By this point the detail stuff should be easy to pick out and it's mostly leg work.

The main focus of your comic sounds like kick ass motorcycle fights, so keep that in mind. Don't lose sight of what's inspiring you, basically.

Any questions? I'm not an expert, but I dabble.

Maybe you can piece some things together based on what you want to include?
For instance motorcycles are for traveling, so you're going to have to give the characters a reason to travel. Maybe picking up/delivering something/one, a race? Running from pursuers as they surface from time to time trying to accomplish some goal? Trying to get to a far away safe zone? Start throwing around some scenarios and you might be able to fill in more details and connect some dots.

By not being a cringe le depressed artist type. Don't like your life? Treat writing as escapism. Doesn't mean what you're writing has to be all sunshine and rainbows, but try to make something that isn't just depicting reality.

Well, the same way anyone else would. This is a very difficult task, with books and schooling dedicated to this.
There's the usual advice: start with an idea, figure out how you want it to end then work backwards and so on, but really no matter how you do it it'll be annoying.
I don't know if this will help you at all but personally there's one work I've been thinking up for years and years now, that I know what beats I want to hit with it and how each plot thread will end from memory. Every other thing I try to make I feel like I constantly forget shit about it, but this project sticks in my head for some reason. So, uh I guess if I had any advice, try to find something that sticks in your head and it won't feel like you're trying to force ideas, I guess.

>well, that actually helps a bit. I guess the idea that sticks in my head feels way too ambitious for my current skill level, or work ethic
Haha, likewise man. I don't really have any advice here. Gotta just suck it up and make some sacrificial lamb works first to build expertise.
Maybe try to think of an idea, doesn't have to be an amazing idea, just something you think mite b cool, then just build on that. Don't get too attached to it, it's just something for you to hone your skills on.
To give you an example, instead of working on my "big idea", I instead am working on a lesser-idea that I still kind of like. It started from thinking "man why aren't there any comfy SoL series set in and around a wizard's tower?" and has since evolved beyond being recognizable as coming from that seed... so, I guess, look for "seeds" of ideas then grow them into something.
"How about an isekai... in space... and the main character is a serial killer!"
"What if an old-timey fisherman went on a high-tech submarine adventure?"
"Aliens invade the middle ages!"
You know, vague concepts like this that you can imagine lots of different ways it can go, then just think of how you'd like that scenario to end and work backwards from there. Or start from how it begins and build to a conclusion, or whatever.

If you're asking exactly how you should do that, then idk lol. Write it in a notepad, scribble sketches, whatever. I don't really have a method that just werks because personally I'm a lazy note-maker and most of the shit I write down gets invalidated the next time I have an idea of what whatever I'm thinking of is gonna be.

>> No.4562311

>>4562302
Forgot to mention that one-shots are perfect for "sacrificial lambs" built around a single concept. You take an idea, fiddle with it until it's something you can make something out of, then through together a 20-50 page one-shot of it, then review your work and see what you failed at and try to improve.
Jumping into a series will achieve two things: 1. you will quickly grow and improve as a comic creator and 2. you will just as quickly notice how fucking bad the beginning of your series was. Then it's up to you whether you want to keep going anyway, go back and re-do the beginning before you continue or just stop completely and come back to it in the future (or never).

Anyone willing to help me hash out part of my story? It's a subject I'm not too familiar with and not easily researched on my own.

Basically I need a way for this kid to end up getting tricked or coerced by a hacker into going somewhere that he ends up dying, perhaps by human traffickers or organ thieves, maybe a stalker and serial killer? I'm not sure about the hacking part, whether they'd just mislead him or sell info that the killers use to trick him or something. I need help piecing together specifically how a hacker or info thief would lead him to get killed.

What is your character’s motivations? What would motivate him to risk it all to get duped in the end? Does he care about someone to think “oh shit he/she’s in trouble! I’d better do as this hacker known as 4chan says!” Or does he have any drives? You should flesh out your boy Yuichi a bit more. Give him something to care about that would reflect the story.

Well that's part of the issue. Since I don't really know what someone could do to manipulate someone remotely like this, I can't put his reasons in place. His baseline has enough there that I think could be used by someone, for instance they could threaten his family or his dad's business. He's a student trying to either get into college or maybe go into an internship, so it could be as simple as being sent a fake email to meet for an interview. But I don't know everything a hacker or anyone who'd be plotting something like this could or would do so I just want some suggestions of ways they might go about manipulating him to get me started.

Like if I had a scene where a character uses a gun and I ask "hey what kind of gun do you think would be best for __" I don't think that'd be a big deal. This is on that level. It's a small part of what gets the ball rolling, but hacking and deep web shit or whatever isn't remotely the focus of the story.

For each chapter, I write out my outline first. I make it into a list of events that happen within the story. Then I break it down and type out a script. It doesn't have to be a super detailed script, so long as it lists the actions and dialogue so that I can have a reference to go back to.

Then I draw out my thumbnail, pencils, inks etc.

As far as prepping goes, when I'm writing out my script, I usually have a clear idea of how each panel will look. I may change a few things like position of characters, or camera angles, but the basic idea is laid out during the thumbnails. After that it's just execution.

Then he must bring the packet somewhere where hacker can later take it. This place is in some remote location and when kid get there he meets a serial killer in the process of murdering someone. But I want the hacker guy to have kind of a shitty history so maybe instead, he has to go meet up with people who are pissed at him, that maybe he owes money to, so he coerces this kid to go in his place and they kill him because they think its the hacker guy. I'm thinking that brings all the characters way more into the story, they all felt a little disconnected from the events to me before. Thank you!

It's probably best if you ditch it altogether, except for 3/4 angles where a character is facing more towards the camera than they are to the side. Horikoshi's method of drawing mouths would be pretty well suited to this style, study that guy.

I just don't know what to draw in the last panel. I hate this. The space is too small for me to draw the characters nicely, but I also can't just draw another random background shot.

I think Making Comics discusses a bit about how manga uses atmosphere and aspect-to-aspeft transitions in paneling. McCloud should absolutely publish a book exclusively on manga technique and particularly -- narrative (ki-sho-ten-ketsu and how that form changes over a variety of genres). Manga is simply more diverse in storytelling, Western writers would benefit from learning about Asian day-in-the-life and psychological dramas.

Small critique, when she's breaking the guy's arm, instead of punching the more natural motion would be a hammer fist strike using the side of the hand.
Or- depending on how strong she is- for more intimidation points she could simply break his forearm or wrist by twisting her hand and applying pressure from her thumb and fingers, as seen in this crappy diagram.

Really nice painting but please make the dividers straight, the reason it’s done is to contrast the typically organic shapes in art so that panel delineation is clear.
But I do love the painting, I need to get better god damn
Also maybe it’s deliberate but I’d advise editing the lower panel so that the hill from the second panel doesn’t look like it’s sliding into the bank on the third panel.

Not one of my most recent pages, but one I'm pretty happy with. I haven't updated it in like, a year. Feel like I hit some sort of art rut. Spent the past year drawing lewds instead of the comic every time I got the drawing bug. And while my lewds have gotten better, my comic has completely staled progression.

Even went so far as to get the first volume printed, just to be able to say "Yeah, I followed through on the first step of this project."

I don't usually make comics, actually, it's been years since I made one. I found a work flow that means I can make simple pages quickly. Anyway, I thinking about a game I used to play in the 90s called Turok Dinosaur Hunter and I thought I'd start a little fan fic about it. Page 1/5
