Have any of you tried practicing drawing just in your head? Has it improved your physical drawing skills?

I told /ic/ I would do this, like a couple years ago. Everyone thought I was crazy.

Also there was some video when Jung said he spent a lot of time just staring at people and imagining drawing them. A lot of the "pros" seem to just stare at things a lot.

So... did you do it? Or did /ic/ crab you back into the bucket?

You mean image training? I suspect it could help greatly when drawing things in perspective. Might try it before bed.

I used to do this a lot. It never really improved my skills, but thinking about drawing constantly made me want to physically draw even more. So it helps for motivation I guess.

I sort of do this. I try to blend art with everything I do, if I see a cool object but have no supplies with me I try to draw it in my head and see it in different perspectives.

Kim Jung Gi did this in his compulsory military service in which he couldn't find time/wasn't allowed to draw.

Nathan Fowkes also does this, so I think it works somehow, I have tried it a couple times myself and its relaxing, kinda like meditating, though I can only rotate boxes, cilinders, spheres, simple shit.

I've done sometimes, usually in situations I'm not actually able to draw - like when I'm laying in bed or taking a shower. Also when I'm drawing and I want to add or change something I visualize how it should look in my head first but I assume everyone does that at least.

Yeah same here, I still do. Doing this combined with targetting skills I am weak in when I draw seems to mean I improve very fast. I like to watch speedpaints and then think about how I would apply techniques used in my own art, then actually use what I've learnt after I've figured out how to apply the stuff I just learnt. The only problem is that I am often left lagging behing in my understanding of how to get the tools I have to do what I want so I take a lot longer to do things the first time than if I had just worked up to it. I am much faster on subsequent attempts, but by then I typically am already looking for ways to improve other shortcomings.

I no longer do this because it kind of made me depressed and not want to draw as frequently when I was overanalysing things this much. I'm working on improving my ability to draw quickly now, and trying to focus more on making things I like rather than only on getting better. This method does work very well, though. I was able to get to a point where I could render near realistically when I had drawn less than 70 pictures, only like 20 of which actually had rendering instead of flat colours or cell shading.

I do this all the time but unconsciously. I think about pictures I'd like to draw, what angles, poses and colors I'd make things, and test out different compositions in my head. I don't know if it helps because I still suck shit.

Every day that's what I do for fun a few minutes as I try to sleep.
I don't think it actually improves me but it helps me stay in shape, many nights I feel like I could jump out of bed and do a really good drawing following my imaginary sketch

no, i rather just draw with pen and paper.

Yes I do draw in my head but mainly when I look at gallery art, or when I'm reading a comic.

Oh yeah, don't ever, EVER draw. Just imagine doing it and read all the books. You'll be a master in no time.
