id say she was even really good and better than most of /ic/ in 2002
she had very clean lines and coloring it looked good
the only bad drawings in this were 2004, maybe 2003 if youre gay and 2006 but even then in 2003 she had good attention to detail with that girls shirt, 2004 just looks meh at best and 2006 isnt that good at all nothing stands out.

This guy is being an undeserved stinker about it, but he's not really wrong either. There are some big technical milestones at like 2009, 2012, 2015, but inbetween that theres a whole lot of style crutch stagnation. Not to mention this artist started out good already. They may be pushing 30 years deep.

But that should be a motivational thing, not a bad thing. You could accomplish this in 5 year with a bit of effort. Less if you study right.

Basically, some fundies grinding mixed with figure drawing basics. Read the sticky and many other sources too:

Dropbox until plant construction (will continue but at a longer pace): basic box construction helped me a lot to start thinking in 3D.

Marshall's Vandruff perspective classes: absolutely fantastic

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, did the exercises, then dropped the book.

Basic Loomis head construction from some YouTube videos

Fist 40 pages of Figure Drawing for all it's worth

All that basic videos by proko (figure/head/hands) and more art YouTubers I can handle at my level: at one point I understood that consuming too much YouTube guides is just procrastination.

Right now I'm starting Glenn Vilppu Drawing Manual to solidify figure construction, as a way to ease myself into his classes. I've watched his Upper Chest class and his teaching is incredible, but I need more figure basics.

I'm trying to study gesture from movies from time to time. Also read James Gurney's Artist Guide to Sketching, drawing life outside is refreshing (pre quarantine in my country).

Glad you find my progress inspiring, I've got inspiration from the best side of /ic/. Hard work: art gains.

The way i see it, the artist had to unlearn classic manga tropes before transitioning toward a healthy approach with form and values.

Going from the same moe blob 3/4 view to a variety of shapes, poses and camera placements starting 2012. Everything before that was fluff hiding deep lack of fundies.

Your concepts are interesting (the bug restaurant stuff mostly), but the image compositions extremely stiff. Try drawing more instead of piecing 90% of your images together with photobashing and 3d models. It would loosen things up a bit.

Although i don't think You would need a school to make the same spurt. Just make sure you study from the right material and put in all the hours you have.

Biggest improvements were in school for sure. Some guys came in drawing stick figures and ended up in AAA studios after graduating.
https://fzdschool.com/for-students/before-after
Take that with a grain of salt tho as the drawing to the left they gave us only an hour and the one to the right we had unlimited time.
We simply didnt sleep at that school, so yeah i think its hours put in mostly. Also make sure you study from good resources, dont waste your time.
>>4548535
Thanks!
Usually I work in high contrast first, this make sure everything is readable on the most basic level. then fill in everything in between. When im nearing finish ill remove the darkest darks and lights lights to put them where i want the most contrast or they seem the most natural.
Colors i usually keep very basic, depends on the mood or design im going for. the chromatic aberration your talking about is achieved with the curves turned up like this and then lowering the opacity or erasing out colors you dont want.
Hope that helps!

So when I was in FZD we would draw all day except for classes so maybe about 14 hours a day.
They would teach us Design and fundamentals at the same time. I think thats a big plus, design is very overlooked in all the online tutorials I've seen.
Your drawing might be perfectly rendered but if the design wasn't there the teachers would shit on it anyway.

When I got a job in a indie studio I could only get to 9-10 hours before i was too burned out. It was very demanding.
Now as a freelancer I work whenever I feel like it, It has become a habit. I'll get depressed if I don't create for a while, so I'm pretty much all ways working on some kind of project.

I'll detail my journey a bit more as I think some people may have gotten the wrong idea. I'll start by saying that I didn't go from absolute /beg/ to my level in five months, I did indeed draw as a child and teenager, mostly cartoony and doodly, on my own. I was avoiding to talk about this because it's way too frequent that some people use "drawing as a child" as an equivalent to "talent" - but those who seek excuses believe in anything that silence their demons.

When I was 13, I did some cheap drawing classes that taught me basic "drawing what you see" skills, stuff you get from books like "Drawing on the right side of the Brain" - observational drawing. My teacher was really lazy, he didn't teach or motivate a lot, but so was I. I hated studying, discipline, and I hated just drawing still lifes: fruits, baskets, cloth. This was the last - and best - drawing I've made while studying with him, at 14, but I hated realism, hated studying drawing. I just wanted to draw cartoony dragons and robots.

I've dropped drawing seriously since then. Now I'm 30, have no monetary aspiration with drawing, I want to make something beautiful. So I started studying again, from where I've stopped, with discipline and knowledge that I have limited time on Earth. It saddens me that people in this thread get hopeless just because some people develop over time with hard work: for me, the belief in talent is the pure hopelessness.

Answering directly your questions: I can't quantify the time spent grinding fundamentals, as I keep doing them a little bit everyday. I like to draw straight lines and elipses as a warm-up, some boxes every day. I did all the basic drawabox exercises. When I don't know what to draw, I go to Croquis Café and do some gesture sketching for 20mins, as I want to get serious with figure drawing.

For how many hours I draw, I draw on my free time. Some days it's 1h, many days it's 3h, but in this quarantine, I may draw for 6 hours or more.

Here's an improvement I made of an old WIP from last year vs this year.

Granted I had a 6 month hiatus due to sickness but now that I'm back on track shit's improved a lot.

Whatchu guys think? Keep in mind not everythings rendered yet.

The /14 one is as a whole from imagination - the 19 is jsut a study for values.

I kinda improved on a lot of things... and all those years inbetween couldn't even draw everyday and had so many breaks.. life give you sometimes something you have to go through so you grow up - but now this year im drawing everyday and taking it seriously to the point were i only want to draw and improve everyday.. finally i have some time to get all thse years back ^^
don't posting my current works, but improving kinda ok at my understanding.

It's hard to say without seeing something from imagination, but yes your values are SO much better. Only thing is your brushwork seems kinda messy, the edges are all a bit blurry and wiggly. Keep it up.

>> No.4557105

>>4557096
Thanks.
Yep my edges are blurry on that piece - but i improved on that subject too - i don't even paint as much as i draw.
But since my drawing improves my paintings dratically did too, even if i did not put as many hours into painting as into drawing and that happend intuitively.

I think the problem with these improvement posts
(for me at least) is that I don't have a good fundamental and I'm inconsistent with my skill level.

If you just look at the good one you wouldn't be looking at the full picture.

Art is a hobby, so I don't actively work on it as hard as I would like, since when I want to draw art I just want to have fun. But that creates stagnant growth.

The top ones demonstrate my progress, while the bottom one are ones I don't like because it shows me how long the road ahead still is and how inconsistent my abilities are.

These where painted a long time ago, before i started to take classes and do academic shit. The oldest of them maybe 7-8 years old, if i remember correctly. I was painting maybe one picture in a year, sometimes a couple years. And didn't draw between them even some doodles on paper, because i am a lazy imbecile that wasted time.

Looks like you used a ref in 2019 but not this year. You went from a 3D head properly attached to a neck and body to a flat head floating above the body. I think you're getting ahead of yourself thinking about rendering; it's impossible to render meaningfully when your base sketch isn't even in 3D. You need to walk before you run, anon.

I already posted those, those works all where created in last 2 years, in that time i started studying how to draw properly, academically(?). Those all made at home by myself, without a teacher help. I won't show works that i did on classes, because i can't call them completely mine ( and because the difference between them and these is dramatic and humiliating for me).

Nah I think the guys that improved a lot in fzd would have made it anyway. Some classes have 50% dropping out, about 50% of the graduates don't work in the industry.

Even the teachers said we were throwing away our money since you could study the same subjects back home. The main thing the school does is to motivate you to work as hard as you can.

You would have to put your work on the wall for the teachers to critique. That way you could see exactly who put in the most work, increasing the competitive feeling between the students.
Then sometimes Feng would come in and absolutely shit on everyone's work, saying that only the best 2 might have a chance to make it. some people would leave the class crying. For some it was too much and they dropped out.

Mainly FZD taught me that with dedication and hard work you can move mountains.
Put in the hours, practice the right things and you'll be surprised where you'll get.
Attitude plays a big part.

I could be getting better faster considering the amount of hours I put into drawing, so I'm slightly embarrassed, but overall I'm content. If I continue at the same rate I'll be where I want to be in maybe 6 -8 years, which is before I'm even 30, so that's nice. Of course plateaus can happen, but hopefully I'll be progressing nicely.

It's so weird to look back on work I used to be proud of and see now that it was total 13 year old on deviant art tier, but that just means I'm getting better.

Ahh okay thanks. I tried to do that book but I thought it was a lot of filler. Might have to go back to it looking at your progress. Keep it up.

I remember you, I've always been a fan of your color choices.

On a more off topic note, any books/courses you'd recommend and how to study from them?

Aug 19 is where I start to like my work, still like that piece though I can see a lot of flaws.

I just do a lot of croquis cafe
studies whenever I can, and study off of a lot of different art. Finding things you like and adopting parts of them for yourself + making them your own. Stuff like linework has been hardest for me desu, and it just took a lot of practice. I'm still no where close to where I want to be with that.

>no way it's drawn by the same person.

this is the reason nobody ever recognizes me lol. I've been posting here regularly for 10 years now but my styles are so inconsistent that nobody knows it's me. And that's just my digital work.

The pandemic has essentially forced ALL art schools into offering classes online right now. And since everyone out of work, most of them are on discount.
It may not be the FZD of your dreams, but there is good instruction out there if youre willing to look for it.
Have you tried Gnomon? Theyre online pretty much year round and have a good rep among pros. Or any of the courses offered on Artstation marketplace? You can make it anon.

It's like God put me through a whole life of boredom and suffering just so I could see everyone but me achieve their dream.
