IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

previous >>4529106

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>No rules lol
FUN ALLOWED
/beg/inner posting is encouraged.
Every point of view is valid even if you were a day into art.
You MUST give advice and/or critique other people's work in order to have healthy interactions with each other so we all can make it.

>Before you post your work
1. It's true that the sticky is a bit outdated and most people don't care for reading it or even do the excerise of the upside down Stravinsky so if that is your case you've come to the right place,
people in here is waiting for you to post your work and give you proper advice. In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are strongly discouraged since it doesn't help anybody to get better.
We DON'T expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we DON'T expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
We are happy to provide you those tools in this thread.

2. DO POST your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. It doesn't really matter if you're asking for a SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject. You might as well post no text whatsoever along with your work.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", meme replies such as "Loomis" are strongly discouraged, we don't make fun of one and other here.

Follow these simple rules or maybe not but always remember to be nice to /beg/s and the people giving advice at all times.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
NO FUN ALLOWED
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have atleast read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

I've moved over to practicing figure drawing instead of portraits and I've seen considerable improvement applying the idea of drawing under a time limit and drawing faster than you're comfortable with to get in the habit of drawing more and not getting caught up in details.

Would the same approach work for portraits (or anything)? Is it better to sketch under varying time restraints (1 min, 3 min, 5 min, etc) or does that seem to work for only certain subjects?

Don't think too hard about it. The placement fits the rhomboid. Deep muscles don't matter so it's not any of them.
When you put your arm back like that the scapula pushes the fat and it creates a bump like that one. Hampton likes to draw fat as if it were muscles.

I'm currently learning the torso as well so I can relate to the struggle.

I think one thing that has helped me is I started out by grinding the basic shape of the torso into memory. Doing so allows you to start seeing that base mass underneath every diagram or photo. That helps when discovering why muscles lay across the ribcage and back the way they do. I did studies like pic related for over 20 hours, the torso shape for me at least, is so difficult.

After doing that, I'd say study diligently and slowly, really learn the shape of the separate muscles of the torso individually before approaching them as a whole.

Lastly, Hampton's book is not an anatomy book. He states that himself. I'd suggest Bammes, anatomy for sculptors and others. The anatomy drawings are much better and more thorough.

Even on slender anime girls, there are certain basics that you need to know, otherwise they'll never look right. Traps, deltoids, calf muscles, etc.
However if you're just starting out with figure drawing you shouldn't get TOO into learning the muscles beyond the minimum requirements. If you can't construct a good simplified arm or leg out of simple cylindrical forms, then detailed knowledge of the muscles won't help you, and will likely just confuse you.

i want to start doing studies but i dont know how to start

What do you mean under "depth" as in a visible 3D form or depth in the sense variety/detail?
If you wish to improve the best was is to move out of your comfort zone and try new things. Draw things you have not drawn before, yes you will fail and you will suck but that is how improvement starts.

Anons, my brain won't operate in 3D. Perspective and foreshortening especially have always eluded me and I don't know what to do.

I tried to draw something here inside of 3D boxes but my brain just ended up removing all perspective in the process and creating 2D shapes on planes.

I figured maybe I'd twist around some Loomis mannequins but the empty spaces are just flat 2D to me, and I don't know how to twist them.

The only solution is to OVERTHROW your brain and ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL!

Ok, on a more serious note you, your words make me feel like you are feeling guilty for not understanding this and thus you blame someone/something (your brain in this situation) for you not being able to accomplish the goal you have set for yourself and you need a scapegoat to protect your integrity and good intentions. Even tough if your brain would not be able to operate in 3D then you literally would not be able to perform basic tasks that require spatial awareness like grabbing an object before you with your hands.

Listen Anon, it is fine okay? IT IS FINE! It is fine to not be able to understand something. It is just frustration and hopelessness that talks out of you. You can this, do not give up! Just do more basic perspective exercises like boxes, in art school people draw just boxes for months. So do not worry just keep working at it, have faith that it will clear out.

Have some bunnies to cheer you up.

Seems like you've reached a dead end, which isn't so bad if you are aware of it. Try to develop an intuition for these things, even if its limited, so you can grasp why something isn't right. Then you can experiment with potential solutions. Draw the same thing 10, 15, even 20 times. Trace stuff. Use live models. When you run that out, revisit whatever you're trying to do now. By then, you'll have the experience necessary to relate concepts to past efforts. It takes a while man.

The one on the left is definitely on its way to looking 3D. Just gotta clean some things up.
A big part of foreshortening, and making things look 3D in general, is drawing forms so that they partially overlap, and the closer forms cover up and hide parts of the more distant ones. A lot of beginners are VERY hesitant to make forms overlap for some reason. Like, I already drew this shape, and now I don't want to mess it up by drawing over it, or something. But you have to.
Draw lots of cubes, draw lots of spheres, do the wrapping lines exercise on drawabox. Understanding wrapping lines was what really unlocked the idea of 3D for me. And try just drawing a bunch of simple forms where some of them overlap others, to get a feel for it.

this looks fun. my advice would be learn how to draw feet. you’re avoiding drawing them and in the long run marking where the head/feet will go while you’re in the planning stages will help you ground your figures and keep track of proportions.

>> No.4534016

I'm starting to understand, guys. Loomis just doesnt explain very well. At the beginning of the book he puts the nose right where two lines intersect, the eyes above and the mouth the same distance below. Then out of nowhere he starts to draw the eyes over the middle line, the nose below and the mouth at the edge of the sphere, but he doesn't tell you that explicitly. I was trying to follow the first instructions while trying to replicate the other constructions and that's why my drawings were round as hell.

to achieve more of a 3D look you simply need to add more details some way. This could be done by lineart or more shading to teh colors. For that you need some understanding on how light affect the 3D shape and develop that understanding. The better you get at that the more 3D and more realistic your art will become. You are using solid cell shading for shading which does makes it more challenging but do not let this discourage you.

The best way for that is study light since obviously shading is the direct result of light.

I can suggest the Foundation of Light and shadow video series by Sycra, I think this explains this stuff in the simplest way possible for a beginner it is easy to follow and goes step by step.

For a shorter and more condensed video you could also try Istebrak's explanation

These explain the rules of light which is the first step to understanding it.

Buy a 12-pack of Pilot G4 pens from Amazon, they're good for manga layout drawings. Consider buying Kaimei lettering sol, it's a matte black ink that Junji Itou claims to use.
