IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

previous >>4518379

READ THE STICKY if you need guidance.

Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have atleast read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve you technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice.

My second face portrait using proportions, top of her hair wasn't in the image so her head looks flat. I think it looks somewhat like her, the eyes are too big and I struggle with symbol drawing them.
Still on chapter 3 of keys to drawing, don't feel like moving forward just yet.
I think I'll try to do one figure drawing or portrait a day along with one landscape or object study. The main reason I'm doing that is to stop my habit of symbol drawing and practice values. If that's to overwhelming I'll just do one, plan on finishing keys to drawing mid May and moving forward to 'Fun with Pencil'.

Any good tips on portrait drawing you guys can provide?

You're not drawing what you're seeing although it has some resemblance. You should have used another reference pic of the Hershlag in order to finish the portrait properly if you don't feel confident enough to proyect the drawing by yourself. By leaving the face incomplete the Hershlag looks like she has an extremely fat side of her face compared to the other. Good job giving it depth.

I don't know, what does Feng count as "a drawing"? I'm guessing that means any piece you do with the intent of trying to get better at some specific skill—gesture, construction, anatomy, contour drawing, line quality, etc. As for length, it can be as little as 10 minutes or as much as 2 hours, give or take.

Alright /beg/, I'm up to the actual human faces using the ball and plane method in FWAP, and I'm hitting the first wall. I can draw his blooks just fine, but I'm struggling at actual human faces.

I look carefully and it's so fucking subtle the differences that make mine look weird and uncanny, while his look like an expert comic. I think it's because I look at mine, and I still see symbols for the eyes, nose, and mouth, where with his I actually see those features, if you know what I mean.

This is the entire point though. I've been attempting to unlearn shitty "How to Draw Manga" books from my childhood, and I could never get faces right. I'm ready to grind at it calmly and figure out how to make good faces, both realistic and anime styled.

Throw me your fucking tips for faces, what you've done that's worked, specific resources to grind at it, maybe which parts of the face to REALLY focus on, etc.

Oh, don't take my estimate for it then. "Until 40" is because I'm a lazy fossil, I've seen people go from nothing to great in 2-3 years. If you practice daily and learn to hide shaky anatomy under eye-catching rendering, you can get real good by the time you're my age.

read the books carefully, copy the drawings on the book using the fundamentals described there.
eg; copy the loomis' faces by using his process, do that with at least loomis' and vilppu's introductory books, as they teach different strategies that are useful in different situations, watch the videos in the video thread, they help a lot.
Then study perspective, learn the basic rules and then do a bunch of drawings. DON'T do things from imagination at frist, since you're not studying design but perspective, also don't waste time collecting refs, just draw whatever is in front of you not by copying but by using perspective, after you've done everything around you, do it again but in different imagined perspectives.
After you've comfortably done this, study other artists, some you like, admire and wish to be like, now with the fundies you are aware now, break down their paintings and study the way they dealt with certain issues like foreshortening design etc.

Most people forget that you can't "just draw", you need to study. How do you study any other subject? Think how flashcards work. You try and remember the answer. You think real hard to try and remember. If you can't remember, you look at the answer, go through the stack, then again, try and remember.

Apply this to art

1.) Read/watch/copy something to study "the answer"

2.) Try and "remember the answer" when you attempt it yourself.

3.) If you did it wrong, go back and review the answer again.

You just do this over and over until eventually it clicks.

Really scrub question: how do you locate the cranium for Loomis? I always feel like I get baited by the hair or headgear. Can I just start with the side oval? I find it gives more direction to the face.

You still need to practice for muscle memory retard. You can read about structure and underlying phenomena all you want, but the only way to actually get good at applying that knowledge is through repetition.

I got here by drawing almost every day since childhood. I didn't do any construction and free handed everything which gave me a very good sense of space and eyeballing skills, but left me with shit planning skills and no ability to copy from ref. I hope you’re trolling, all that’s needed is /beg/, /draw/, /alt/ and /trad/. really we don’t even need /asg/ that badly because it could easily merge with /beg/. /draw/ is for “intermediates” because what else would qualify you for posting there, being pro? there aren’t enough (if any) pro level artists here to justify having a whole thread. I like the idea of beg being the fastest moving thread where anyone can post their studies or practice regardless of skill level because you might actually get a crit here.

I found that using the bezier is easier to use in a lot of situations. Are there any cons to using the bezier? seems like a really useful too for line art but i don't see a lot of digital artists use it
