Compared and relative to what most people usually did I genuinely thought everyone did great. Sure a lot of stuff wasn't "great" in the sense that you'd print it and hang it on a wall, but most people worked hard on their submissions and made work that showed their improvement. You have to look at someone's work comparatively to themselves, not others. At least that's what I tend to do.

For future reference feel free to send me a dm on discord! What are you looking to study, anon? Found some old work from 4 years ago, when I first started posting on original LAS. (I think the Froggies and old man might be 5.) I think there's two things that single-handedly helped me the most. Doing cast studies with charcoal and drawing inside my forms (I highly recommend using blue or red when sketching). Leaving my comfort zone also helped me immensely. Till about two years ago I almost exclusively painted dragons and creatures from imagination when not doing studies from life. Stopping that and expanding the things I drew helped my draftsmanship a lot.

No worries! That's actually exactly the spot I was in till two years ago. I mostly did illustrative work for commissions so I was heaps better at painting/rendering compared to drawing. What helped the most for that is plain ol' mileage, can't escape it.

I've only ever done one single Bargue study. I used to go to an atelier for about a year and they had all kinds of casts there, usually posed with different items etc or cloth. I have a cast I bought from a museum that I use for studies now but desu I haven't had the time to do any of those in a long time. I used to be based in Greece and you can buy cast copies there. You can probably find cheaper ones on amazon! My apartment is really small and setting up for charcoal studies can be super messy. You can absolutely do cast studies from photographs too, but if you can study from life. There's a lot of stuff cameras distort. I usually do a mix of both.

Knowing how far away my drawings skills are from my goals is painful.
I came up with an exciting but complex idea to draw from imagination (e.g. first person view of a person moments after getting pushed off a building), but then reality swiftly busts in and punches me in the face, mocking me for daring to draw from imagination when my fundies are underdeveloped.

Picture making itself is a skill, and you won't learn it if you don't practice it a lot.
The process of struggling, finding little things to try out, learning what makes things easier or harder, trying to copy other artists' processes and techniques, figuring out how to slightly improve the pile of garbage you've made so far, comparing to good artwork and photos and whatnot, that's the process of learning to make pictures.
Don't think of making pictures as the natural result of studying a lot, because it's not.
Making pictures is a very involved process and where your most important learning happens.

You can't draw something you haven't seen before. Even KJG says he never draws what he hasn't observed. What you need to do once you get an ambitious idea is come up with a plan to execute it. Collect references. Figure out what parts of the drawing will be tough for you, and develop the skills to deal with them beforehand. Going in blindfolded and expecting to kick ass has never worked.

That stuff, "fundamentals," is what you apply to the process of making pictures. A different set of fundamentals, more personal and learned through experimentation, are involved in making pictures. You're going to have to fail upward.

If you still want to do it, start by identifying everything that confuses you in that reference. Is it anatomy, lighting, perspective? Look for answers in books, videos, wherever. I went to go study why people think men are funnier than women and I believe that is it, they just try more things while women are afraid of looking bad.
