What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I don't understand what exactly is your doubt about colors, since there is no environment, so establishing any sort of rule for how colors should look like is not so rule-bound.

The best you can do without such information would be the "warm lights, cold shadows" or vice-versa.

By the way, I flipped the BG color to its opposite, to emphasize her skin and hair, rather than her blue coat.

Quantity over quality.

>>4502933
It's probably because you don't fully understand volumes yet, so it takes you a long time brushing around and sculpting the forms.
As you improve, you start to be economic with your brushes and still achieve the same amount of - or even more - depth.
The obvious advice here is to not waste so much time shading stuff that's dark. Start with dark flat colors and add light to them, that's where 80%+ of the detail should be, and volumes in shadowed areas just suggested.

All of that of course thinking in terms of efficiency.

My new style is brutalism with radical minimalism. It's inspired by Malevitch and other russians artists (Benjamin, ...)
I just save blank pages with Photoshop.
With that workflow I've achieved maximum efficiency, an I manage to get really consistent results on my gesture drawings, thumbnails, mood compositions...
I'm getting crazy mileage that you won't get with your "quality" approach.

Going for broke with the pencil / erasing and my old 01 micron, but it’s taking forever because i can’t stop erasing. It’s weird that ink is so fast because you just power through your mistakes.

It’s been 3 days now... I could have finished 10 drawings in the time to complete this one. I don’t think this going to produce a 10x increase in quality for the 10x cost in time, but the process is fascinating.

if that took you 3 hours just to color and shade it then my friend I'm afraid you have to readjust your priorities.

if you want to exercise your mind to better understand 3D volume and form, and how light interacts with said form, I would heavily suggest taking up sculpting if all other forms of practice fails you. A majority of people just seems to just have all that shit just "click" inside their head once they start sculpting, and it's an excellent way to train your mind to better imagine 3D form.

Fixes i think you should consider with future pieces:
-Push the Nose & Mouth closer to the Eyes. With such a simplified style just omit the bridge of the nose altogether.
-Thin out the area on the far side of the face
- Might be more of a personal preference, sharpen the chin

everything else is visually pleasing, just refine facial feature placement a bit more and I think you're solid, bruv.

so he just half-finishes things, posts it on /ic/ for the muh style backpats and moves onto the next one rather than work on a weak point

I can tell you what I tried to study for fundies - it only lasted about a month before I was so bored I wanted to quit drawing. I just found those one-pager tutorials to follow
> tried some anatomy drawings of muscles (I remember nothing of what I studied)
> tried some Reilly face constructions, after failing to partition the face into quarters or whatever
> tried to make thumbnails of BGs

The only exercises that bring me value are figure drawing classes / figure drawing, and of course just making copies of favorite artists.

Now I just kind of fused all the exercises into each drawing. Start with a pose that I think is cool, then I look for a face that I like, find some interesting looking mech parts to add, look for a pair of shoes, and find a rendering style I like and try to emulate it.

Getting used to drawing again

>> No.4510968

>>4510934
it's the same exact advice as "just look at object" that 80% of every artist will tell you as advice but with a hands-on approach as you're forced to literally build an object from scratch, thus forcing your brain to visualize shit in a 3D space in order to facilitate the sculpting process. Some people may not be interpreting an object the same way someone else would just by looking, which means for some people they can study all they want and still come out with absolutely nothing learned. On the other hand, with sculpting everyone is forced to try and visualize 3D space in their head; you're directly challenging your brain's ability to imagine and recall volume/form when you sculpt.

If you want to sculpt without paying $800 for zbrush, or if you don't want to pay money to buy sculpty clay and wires and sculpting tools, Sculptris or Blender is completely free.

Yeah the whole background is janky as fuck in that picture, it's why it's been sitting on the back burner for a long time now, I just drew it freehand, and should of put more effort in making it look right, so I'm going to have to redraw the stairs and the lefthand Fudog statue, as it's out of alignment with the righthand one.

But it was a quick example I could find of my inking on top of lead, here's another I stopped awhile back, because I don't like her face, it looked better in lead, and then I fucked it inking over it...

retard-poster means that if she's lying, then her bent arm would only get to the top of the hip.
But she's not lying, she's sitting. That's the thing that does not read, either because the pers is too wrong or the drawing too flat/not conveying the forms well. Likely both. Like there should be folds on the stomach, but yours is flat.

The most obvious answer is to draw and paint a ton. Personally I‘ve never used books or any learning resources like that, I just try to draw as much as I can and figure it out in my own time. I often take note of what I’m seeing in real life, how light plays off of things, shapes, figures, proportions and try to remember them the next time I draw, a lot of times I don’t remember them but if you pay enough attention eventually you’ll recall certain things and apply them to your art. For example, I remember having a “eureka” moment at my friend’s house one time because this spotlight was playing off the orange paint of the wall, and it illuminated a problem I had in regards to how light effects color, so I kind of passively gained a bit of insight that way. That made me realize I could be picking up these little nuggets everywhere I go. So yeah, draw/paint a lot and make sure to be very observant of everything you see, especially when you’re not drawing.

You should also try to step out of your comfort zone and try more ambitious compositions to really test your understanding of shapes and forms. If you're sculpting to understand volume and shapes better that's great but at the same time you're kind of wasting all your practice away by sticking to a bust-high shot at 3/4 angle.

You should already know this, but half the speed when it comes to drawing and painting comes from understanding your fundamentals, the other half comes from your work ethic (painting with a 1 pixel brush will obviously take longer than painting with an efficiently bigger sized brush). Always remember that if you feel like you're taking too long with a particular thing you should first address whether it's how you're actually doing it in a productive-sense or if you're just too dumb and all the time is just spent "getting a feel" for it. Even if you do already know, it's important for any artist no matter the skill level to be reminded of it.
