Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Guys can I ask you some advice?

So I have an old mac air. I'm using a small wacom to draw on it. But its battery doesn't work so it isn't portable anymore, and it only turns on due to an old cable that gives it energy from a plug. It's cable is damaged so I expect my laptop to die one day (it has outlived it's life expectancy actually). And it's simply too old of a laptop to waste money repairing it (battery+ cable fees). I might as well buy a new one for what it costs to repair something that might fail soon anyway.

I had bought a 2019 iPad with an apple pencil because, above all it was portable and private. I just wanted to be able to draw alone because I'm shit and I don't like people seeing my studies. That's my biggest obstacle with drawing.

But I had second thoughts and I was considering returning it because I'm tired of ishit's planned obsolesce , and I wanted to just buy a laptop but then... due to the corona shit crisis I lost my main source of income, so no way of paying for a decent laptop even if I returned it.

So I have been drawing on my shit old mac feeling unworthy of my iPad. It's worth to me on it's portability and privacy not it's "horsepower" so to speak.

What should I do anons?

Can someone be kind of enough to explain what those colors mean in pic related and OP image?

The hand are not resting on the floor/bench or whatever either. Draw guidelines on objects you'll rest hands against so you know what motion they should follow. Alwayssss use reference for hands if you're not good at them. Use your own if you must.

does any of this sound right?

something feels off about the perspective-- as if some aspects of the drawing are trying to conform to a somewhat extreme top-down thing, and others aren't.
also, the pose looks kind of weird. firstly, if she's embarrassed, i think it's more natural for her to be leaning forward in shock, in a protective kind of gesture. it's also very symmetrical, which makes it to me look a little unnatural.

you're overthinking it. it's just a way to manually break up the colors for when they get scanned in and digitally colored. houses probably have a scheme they work with for it but it's preference. think of how many different types of tones there can be with clothes, hair, and skin. artists probably use most commonly things like red and blue because they often come in the same pencil, yellow, orange, and purple from what i can think of.

My previous 'Anime Faces' set wasn't really that great since I cut out the necks and I used a black background which blended the black outlines that people usually use on their Anime drawings.
In this new set, I used a nice grey background here (112=RGB). Something that isn't too blinding and makes the image pop out from the background.
I also made sure that the references here actually have necks and shoulders this time. I tried my best to show everything just below the clavicles which I feel is enough to see for a portrait drawing.
In DISCARDED I have a few not-so-great references. Some of them are a bit too blurry and others don't have a clear indication of the shoulders or neck but they are still there for anyone who still wants them.

Also, this is the last thing I'll upload here.
This place is way too damn toxic and spending too much time on here is honestly making me depressed as fuck.

I tried taking my time with sketching today. Used real people as reference again, any feedback would be helpful. I was unsure with left especially around the back to her left shoulder part, the reference was clothed for the most part and some parts were hard to analyze. >> No.4509356

>>4509303
you have some understanding of perspective but i think your drawings can really improve if you focus on tightening up your angles. it looks like you're flattening out parts of the picture into an angle that you're already comfortable with drawing, instead of really analyzing the orientation of those parts. using real people as reference is a great way to study because reality introduces a lot of uncomfortable problems that can help us really improve. of course, sometimes the "real" angle of something just looks terrible and should be changed, but i don't think that's what's happening here. can you post the refs?

This isn't exactly copying an anime reference, but I have been emulating a few different Manga artists I like for years now, in an attempt to incorporate aspects of their styles into my own, as well as western super hero comic type art, and just traditional life-drawing.

Artists like Kenta Miura, Tetsuo Hara and Boichi are who I've been taking inspiration from for a long time now.

I just finished the pencil line-art and rendering on this piece, but I'm gonna take a break for now, and come back to it to do the inking.

The stiffness is something I can't really do much about, it's a byproduct of the way I draw, I don't presketch anything (as you can see in attached image, I just draw as I go), and I draw with my wrist entirely.

I also am not going to bother with his head anymore, I've redrawn it like 4 times...I've gone by the scale of his hands, he could cover his whole face with both of his hands (also his particular humanoid race have slightly elongated skulls, due to having gemstones embedded in their foreheads).

The arms are kinda fucky, and the neck doesn't match the perspective. Also, where your forms curve out of view (e.g. where the thigh meets the stocking), it's too sharp a transition. Circles don't have points, so try to draw out the curve and avoid sharp corners, 'cause that really flattens out your drawing.

It's a bad habit of being self taught..I'm trying to stop myself from doing it, as for many years I would draw in pen, and get 75-80-90% of the way through a drawing, and then fuck something up severely, and just throw the picture in the trash.

Very rarely do I draw a full drawing in just ink these days, this would probably be the last one I did.

Hey bros, reposting my work from the random generated waifu thread.
Just started couple of weeks ago and don't know if I should post this here or on /beg/, but I'll try here first.

Can someone point out my mistakes here? I know its beyond fucked up but I can't even pin point exactly what went wrong.

I recommend to trace the image as best as you can don't feel guilty ur learning. however you should also study fundamentals and i mean the very basics get consistent at drawing lines than shapes than more abstract shapes than figures alongside your tracings aswell as studying from life. and of course loomis as redundant as that is. and don't claim traces as your own obviously.

Thanks guys, I honestly recommend just sticking to basic fundamentals, it's not worth the headache of attempting this method of drawing, because for all my decent looking drawings, there's hundreds inbetween that turn out looking janky and I just discard them, many wasted hours, as I've gotten older I'm not as passionate and dont draw often enough, and as a result, am too inconsistent...I suppose digital art would make this easier, maybe one day I'll pull my finger out of my ass and try to learn it, but there's just something about traditional art I like more than digital.

This is probably one of the only other ink only pictures I've done in recent times:

It's not all I do, I try other methods and mediums for a change every now and then, and probably alot of my issues could be alleviated by migrating to digital art, I did have a tablet awhile back, but had to sell it unfortunately, and didn't really delve into it properly.

Every once in awhile I just get the urge to do a highly detailed picture, this time around I tried crosshatching, which is not something I do very often, to try and make the character less flat, seems it hasn't done the trick..I'll keep grinding away at it, till it looks better, I'm in no rush, I only do this as a hobby.

Finding pro quality faces is very easy, but since most characters are drawn with clothes, it makes it harder to study the rest of the anatomy. I call this the loopzone, I draw on top of a sketch and try to draw something more detailed trying to make a pose I clearly can't draw, then I stop and think if it's anatomically correct flipping horizontally and vertically and zooming out, then I morph it using the transform tool, delete and redraw some parts 20 times, then and I'm not sure if what I did before was better or worse, I probably could have redrawn it again in one of the previous states without realizing it.

One time I think a redrew the entire face bit by bit until I thought it was better, only to find that if you compare it with the old state was literally the same but the head rotated like 10°. I nearly shitted my pants, too bad I don't have that drawing anymore I think.

the proportions i've been using lately are a tweaked loomis which helps me get more consistent results. it doesn't deal with 1/3s, and it's easier to play around with. anime isn't quite loomis, usually the chins are a bit shorter. this 50 seconds shows roughly what i mean
https://youtu.be/W9_ac4-zHFQ?t=418

my process is to draw a "circle" with a line halfway through. put the eyes on the line or slightly under. halfway down is the nose, halfway down is the chin. then fuck around with the height of the hair until it feels right, no point in really thinking about the hairline since anime hair gets big. try to keep eyes at least 1.5x eye width apart depending on the angle.

i've found women tend to look better with the 1/2 split between features and chibi/younger/teen girls tend to have 1/3s between the features like in the image posted below your reply. it's not a hard and fast rule but it helps for more modern styles (older styles have the mouth really high up even for mature women). then add all the layers of hair/accessories, which you don't have to because you picked a based bob cut.
