IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Was working on this and I ran into the braids, rather than look at a tutorial I gave it a shot trying two different methods for each braid. The one on the right I tried just kind of copying what I saw on the reference. The one on the left was more an experimental attempt at constructing the braid by twining three separate tapes and then kind of imagining how they'd overlap if those tapes were more cylindrical.

Kinda got tired of drawing portraits, gonna try to add torsos to my portraits in my next one. In order to do this I need to get an intuitive understanding of proportions.

Here's my game plan:
Gonna start by doing some figures in mannequins forms try to get down proportions and perspective. maybe half a dozen pages of this.
The next dozen will add muscles and other features.
Lastly I'll work on one or two pages of rendered work.
Hopefully that's a good starting point just to get the ball rolling. I imagine shit will go awry with the renders and I'll go back to grinding things.

I should probably measure a bit more since I'm not doing that, but it is late in the day and I tend to get more reckless so whatever.

1.) Line quality. Your lineart is shit and wobbly. Learning how to make more confident lines will improve anyone's art by a shit ton.

2.) You're not noticing the details enough. I fall prey to this too. Notice how the hand in the original shows the bottom left curve into the thumb, while yours just goes straight off the page. Notice how in the photo, there's a small bump outwards on the right, while yours basically goes straight into the arm. Those two small things make it look fucked up.

3.) Drawing anime hair instead of the hair you see.

Method is irrelevant as long as the result is something worth seeing.

I really just wanted to draw the same modell a little bit, but I hope my limited input helps a little nonetheless.

I think your drawing is okay, but you lost some important qualities of the modell.
She has these really nice sharp features that seem like they could cut things like a knife, it's really what makes the image interesting and you flattened them out too much.
When placing the eyes think about the surrounding structure, otherwise you get the problem that they're floating around.
Thinking about the eye, the brow and where they meet the bridge of the nose as a single shape should be enough to get it in the right ballpark.

Just read the goddamn book it isn't draw "250 boxes" or "just draw from life lol"
Like I said it's about discovering different ways of seeing/ analyzing things and getting experience.
It's not about telling you what you can or cannot draw either, you want to draw figures then draw figures.
A subject is often chosen for a reason though, only you don't have the experience to tell if it is or not, so you should humour the instructer/ book and draw what you want seperately.

Using construction is fine but here it seems that you had tunnel vision on some areas and drifted off which resulted in some weird proportions. It helps to use a super rough 10 seconds undersketch and eyeballing the proportions and then fixing stuff along the way. If it 'looks' right but technically isn't, then its fine.

>This art is not /beg/ anon
Yeah, it isn't. It's made by a professional comic book artist named Jim Lee, who's one of the best ever:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtNjLkghoJQ

I posted it because I wanted to see what opinions people would have about it, after seeing in previous /beg/ threads some pretty good art being called trash. Some people say that the art I posted here is /int/ and others called it /beg/ (but was made by a super successful professional), so it confirms what I suspected: this website's advice and opinions are mostly terrible and I probably shouldn't come here.

Looking only at the replies to >>4499302, 2 people said it's not /beg/ and 1 person said it is "begchad," which probably translates to high /beg/.
So 2 out of 3 anons correctly recognized it was good art, and 3 out 3 anons correctly recognized it was better than the average stuff posted here.
Regardless of whether "this website's advice and opinions are mostly terrible," this is not good evidence to support that argument.

I still don't think it's that great. Maybe it's just because the photo seems kind of low quality, idk. You intentionally posted a low res photo of a weaker Jim Lee piece so people wouldn't scrutinize your post as much. If you had posted something like pic related then no one would have believed it was your work in the first place, they would have just asked why you were posting some pro's art.
The specific advice given out by this board on how to improve is shitty and contradictory, but one thing I CAN rely on this board for is honest feedback about whether a piece is good or not. Anyone can tell you whether a drawing is good or bad, even non-artists, although not everyone will be able to tell you how to fix it. The biggest barrier to getting unbiased feedback from people is that they don't want to hurt your feelings. That hangup doesn't exist on /ic/, and for that reason I'm glad that a forum like this exists.
