IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Drawing figures without reference at this stage is bad because you cannot evaluate major errors like a head being too small.

It's a good effort but it should show you it's time to go back and draw a handful of pages of figures from reference until these proportions are burned into your head and you can tell a head is too small from any perspective.

You don't need to draw a head from every angle, but you need to draw a sufficient amount of heads in correct proportion to the rest of the body.

There are two parts to aligning the eyes. You can use cheekbones to align them horizontally. Vertical alignment in a 3/4 view needs reference, draw-through, and practice. What I often see is the eye that is the closest to you is too far from the nose bone, and the further eye is too close to the nose bone. Vilppu has a video addressing this in his skull anatomy I think.

Don't draw individual strands of hair. Draw masses of tone that are like twisted, elongated boxes, and then blend them into eachother as per your reference. Look for the highlight in the hair as if it's a ball, and blend these imaginary boxes in towards that as well. Look at neoclassical sculpture of how they handle hair. It's a good place to start.

Eyelashes are fine as a single block of tone, just make sure you get the break planes right because they have to align with bones around the orbital cavity.

It's coming along well. I like how you're curving the lips to suggest volume.

I think I know what you're getting at.

Doing boxes is easy and gives people a false sense of accomplishment so it's a good way to pretend to draw while not engaging yourself at all.

The "250 boxes challenge" is a relatively recent thing. It's pathological and seemingly autistic. I am not sure what kind of a mind actually thinks that's a good way for people to start.

There isn't anywhere in history where students were asked to draw hundreds of boxes or ellipses as introductory lessons in drawing. Not a single school out there has ever taught this way.

Someone will point out to me some example drawings of boxes, cylinders, spheres. These are to get students to understand light and volumes in space. These are tonal, not linear.

Calligraphy is the exception where the exactitude is mandatory and has to be rehearsed since the work is done in ink and cannot be fixed.

>that's not what the beauty of 'nature' is.

If you think this way then you can open up any of the texts that teach you observation skills to draw things in front of you, and you can capture nature/reality as you see it.

It's not easy, but if centuries of artists doing it day in day out seems to point to anything, it might not be such a bad idea.

You've got Harold Speed's book on drawing, Solomon J. Solomon's book, you've got Keys to Drawing. Stay away from anything that looks architectural (ie. autistic) and go for observational and organic drawing.

Hello everyone.
I just picked up my loong lost art of drawing (see pic for my progress today). I haven't been drawing since my early teens.

I'm currently using a sharpie and calc. block along with a black ink sharpie to fill the lines.

What i want to learn is to draw people with the possibility to scan and keep going in photoshop, for this i assume i need other material, like special red/blue (?) pencils together with different types of ink, i assume.

My goal is basically to broaden my ability to make proper art out of my scetches. If you help me out i might actually post my first scetches from today, that im not proud of at all :D

Please tell me if making a career switch to freelance artist is wise or foolish.

I am a man in my mid 20's living in the USA.
Until recently, my career goal looked to be a machine learning researcher in either academia or industry, but I'm not sure anymore.
In 2018, I started a PhD in Machine Learning. That year, the undercurrent of depression, which had been whispering in the background for years, overflowed, and my mental health crumbled. I recall sitting on a couch all day and waiting to die.
I was a broken man.
Something had to change, so I took a leave of absence last year.
I have been convalescing at home, but I don't know what to do with my life.
I can't see myself being happy going back to school. I rarely enjoyed the day-to-day PhD life since the research my advisor's grant funded wasn't of my interest.
But I don't see myself liking a machine learning or even code monkey job either. My depression fucked my head so badly I can barely remember anything I learned from my 7 years of college. I almost never have fun programming.
I always had an interest in art, but I never seriously practiced.
In skill, I am the /beg/ of /beg/s.
Despite how bad I am at drawing, I really do want to improve, and, with no obligations, I have unlimited time to practice.

What do you think I should do?

One thing that's important for that, imo, is being good at what you do. So maybe practice drawing and see if you can be good enough to make a living out of this? If after drawing for a while your drawings still look like shit, maybe try something else, but definitely try drawing first (try hard)

Asking for life advice on 4chan isn't smart.

Here are my two cents however. I'm also in my mid-twenties and I sort of don't like my job sometimes so I can somewhat sympathize.

The problem with drawing as a career is that it'll take two-three years at a minimum if you're new to the scene to be able to turn any sort of a profit on it. This is a choice that should have been made while going to college or in high school. Consider pursuing drawing as a hobby to break through the monotony of the day. Perhaps think of it as a way to leave your mark on the world some day and inspire people. Maybe one day you could even quit your job and pursue it full time.

That's the type of attitude that I find is optimal for people in our situation.

You never draw abs in the gesture phase, maybe the middle line but no more detail than that.
It's decent but you squished his traps and neck.
Also arms should be a bit longer.
In the gesture drawing thread you need to ignore the contours of the body and just focus on RELATIONS. Where is the right elbow positioned relative to the chest, Where is the left foot placed on the ground compared to the head, etc. etc.
You only worry about relations and proportion, you only draw with long lines, NO DETAILS, no contour.
Once you have a base going and that you are confident that all the body parts are placed where they should be, only then you go in and add more detail.

I think my process might be fucked because I start by trying to identify their skeleton and then replicate it, so what I've drawn isn't a "gesture drawing" I don't think. I guess I should go and do that?

gesture drawing doesn't have to be drawing the skeleton. You can go straight into drawing the body, as long as you keep the lines simple and long, pay attention to relations and proportions, you'll be doing it right.
There are many ways to gesture draw, choose whatever feels better for you.

Very important, don't draw on grid paper. Also, you don't need to use red color pencils and non-photo blue if you are not going to photocopy your work or finish the piece with traditional media. If you are only going to scan them to finish the piece digitally you just need a any pen or pencil. gayrunteed pro almost regardless of what you do is 8 hours a day for two years. but that's not really feasible. figure out how long you can enjoy drawing a day and then try to slowly expand on that. most important thing is to enjoy the journey so you don't neck yourself.

This is hard, give advice pls. I already colored everything but it's still lacking something, I can't call it finished.
Perhaps it needs stronger shadows and way more colors...Yeah and I'll try to render the characters a bit more, they're too 2D.

Maybe I also need to add more stuff to the background, it feels too basic. MY CONQUEST IS A SEA OF CLOUDS THIS WON'T STOP ME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

A for effort I suppose, however it's somewhat of an excercise in futility.
Your faces are wildly inconsistent and off the mark, imo it's too early for you to get into painting and value.
Work on your basic drawing ability instead.

It's really nice man.
I think what bothers me most is the gritty brush, it might be nice for some things but I don't think that it's doing you any favours overall.

Looks like someone who's been wearing their pants too high, with it digging into their crotch for so long, that their body started adjusting to that.
Your sense of Form isn't bad though.

>>4498339
Depends, it's quite easy to think that you know what you're doing, so that you don't really realize if you're talking out of your ass or not.
If you think you can help someone try doing it yourself. If it looks like shit or you can't really pull it off, then you probably don't know what you're talking about.
In any case you either help someone or you help yourself by identifying your own weaknessess.

bunch of wonky things
Did drawing, it was somewhat off but it will be fine I was thinking. Shaded it because it more interesting this way - realized it do not work at all - lasso moved things around to make some sense out of it, not sure know how human result is. To procrastinate traced grid on top of the photo and tried to shade it but mostly failed because did it wrong way and constantly forgot about head tilt. the cranium part I made up- was off so I tried liquidity some sense in to it, do not know how correct.

there's just too much going, man.

The pod things can probably be it's own picture for some concept art, the dude can be some blade runner shit, the girl can be nice if she's with like her mom or something.

That snake-faced lion can fuck off, although if the face is fixed I'd think he'd be alright. the mountainous bg could be nice as an exercise ala bob ross in the use of BG>MG>FG colours.

The hues are so saturated that it's hard to tell what should be the focus of this piece. Combine that with all the characters you've added and it's a mess. Simple is better imo.

Also, the perspective difference between whats going on in the sky and the land is semi confusing and unnatural.

it kind of flattering. but if you make them same size and overlay and play with opacity you will see how wrong things are. I know because I tried. Some thing sometimes are surprisingly on point very, some things is off. what I remember is nose was small and eye in wrong place and overall tilt is somewhat fucked up. For what I do - fist I try to get this line between brows and from it to to the chin, then get overall shape and then make things feel similar. For some reason I always struggle with lips most. I'm not in the position to give advises but biggest mistake is to start with small things especially eyes,

You dont see your art as shit when its shit because there is no context. Ur visual library is weak or u have no taste. So as a result when u are drawing and u see ur drawing u feel okay with it. However as soon as u see it next to ur ref or any art with substance and value you can notice the shit for what it truly is. Shit and a sign ur ngmi. I'm sorry to break it to ya.

The only reason ur ngmi is because u ask for help without posting your work. I'm blowing smoke up ur as I can't tell if ur ngmi but what I said about ur art and there being no context sounds about right. Let me know if it does.
