Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

It's a pure hopeful thought of mine, but sometimes I hope I can get good, just to prove that mindlessly doodling is all that you need, and thinking really hard analyzing shit like scientists is pointless. Intuition being all you need.

I agree with you on the intuition over analysis thing but I also don't think that what you're doing is the best way to build up intuition. Just doing the same thing over and over again won't help you progress, you have to do SOME amount of thinking and reflection to identify and fix your mistakes and push beyond your comfort zone.

Stage 1: realising that you are shit at art and working to improve
Stage 2: thinking that you are the best because you dabbed on a bunch of /beg/fags who are younger than you are
Stage 3: realising that you will never beat the best artists because you wasted all your years dabbing on /beg/fags. Instead of improving and considering adults as your rivals, you compared yourself to a kindergartener and are paying the price.

>realising that you will never beat the best artists because you wasted all your years dabbing on /beg/fags.

This makes me sad, because this is anime study thread, and I felt this is misplaced priority. That's not to say you should compare yourself to others, but I thought people wanted to study it because they like the aesthetic because of the narrative medium, and have some sort of ambition to make narrative art themselves. Not to exclude fundies, but I thought since this is the case, one should be able to be tailor their approach to their learning. "I want to draw a story involving my characters, so I'll learn how to draw figures, I wanted show them in certain place, so I will learn backgrounds" etc. Your goal should drive you, and that's generally a story you want to tell.

Ah... I've got my wires crossed, I thought you were the guy who responded to me and said he "wanted to draw cute girls" for some reason.

I am not entirely sure what you meant by subtle curves on the eyes, generally its just a rough inference based on the eye's design based on how it adhares to the surfaces of theoretical eyeballs and the way eyelid would curved across at a 2 quarter view. How it might work is art style dependent and the inference might break down at some point as well because in some style the size of the eye ball is bigger then what can conceivably fit into the skull for example.

I am not sure what you think its wrong with your attempt at the moment, they just looks unfinished to me.

The main issue I'm seeing with your face is... that's all there is. She doesn't seem to have the back of her head or a jaw, she just has the front of her head i.e her face. It's kind of jarring to have such a 2D face with a 3D body. Most if not all of the anime faces you look at will show the depth of the head in some way.
I've drawn something to show what I mean, but bear in mind I'm not too confident at drawing faces myself. I find drawing a box first for the head helps, not only with representing the cranium but also with positioning/tilting the head (it looks like from your drawing you not only want her head to be resting on the ground, but also slightly turned towards the camera).
I'll post a couple of better tutorials in a minute. Keep trying to draw complex angles and shit you're not 100% sure of, it'll help you stay out of the comfort zone.

IMO lacks energy, for example the curves on the body of the girl on front, try accentuating her pelvis, make her waist more pronounced. I like the face of the girl behind, but I'd say try different eyes for the girl in front.

well i just saw those links but didnt finish any of them just jumped every min and non of them seems to explain the 3D anime shit so heres how you should study, first this is based on space jin style, so depending on what you are studying it may be different but not the fundamental break down, you must know every line and why they are there so you will have to make a ref sheet of every angle possible to form a 3D model the rest is just to put it togtheter and get the same results(as close as you can) as the og artist.

that hatching is disgusting. you completely kill the shape making everything flat because it's not consistent at all with lighting or plane changes. especially cross-hatching on women is bad and makes them look hairy. don't do that. use lighter lines to show the form/plane changes. there's mixed hatching all over the place with no rhyme or reason. if you're going to, then stick to parallel hatches.

It depends on what you want to draw, to be honest, I accumulated resources because I wanted to learn how to draw specific things, or how to approach drawing certain subjects. Although consider where we are I assume you mean drawing figures, I think in general a lot of anatomy book are quite adequate when they represent the topic, although if you have some familiarity with surface anatomy and some experience drawing figures, I can also recommend the anatomy collection from ImagineFX, Their "industrial design" approach to constructing figures I found quite useful and is generally how I approach drawing figures.

well the GMI anon had huge gains with it... but I'm personally finding huge omissions of information.

Say his figure drawing books is more a perspective book so in that sense is great. But it doesn't teach how to actually draw legs or arms... so had to use Loomis and Walt Reed to fill the gaps.

and his clothing book has some great tips, but it doesn't classify the 7 types of folds so it's a bt of a mess.

His books have a lot of gold in knowledge, but they have some huge glaring omissions as well that make them annoying to study.

I don't even think that I should draw "more" from imagination, just that I should test my knowledge after doing studies, meaning memory drawing after a study from an artist I like to see if some concepts are solid in my mind.

Just copying helps, but I guess there's a way to make the knowledge stick better after copying.

Listen real closely, conform forms to the ellipse of the head which you used as part of your construction. The key is having an innate ability to persuade the eye with the illusion of space by foreshortening especially when it comes to ellipses for the eyes. Look into perspective made easy by ernest norling and study mechanical perspective if you want to have the ability to create the illusion of space. The more knowledge you have of mechanical perspective the more you will be able to solve the problem of dimensions.
>>4498543
Develop an approach for the figure by simplifying all forms such as box forms and cylindrical forms and spherical forms and refine these forms with the knowledge of anatomy in order to give it a more organic look and using the mechanics of perspective by overlapping forms on top of one another according to their proportion and origins from muscles.

I shill Eaton too and that's nothing like Proko's course. It's not really a drawing course, it's a knowledge course. It familiarizes you with all the major bones and surface muscles of the body. So when you see bumps or indentations you know what they are and the general/shape volume. I go back and review it from time to time when I feel spotty but it emblazoned a ton of anatomy and his insights that stick with me since I first watched it a few years ago. It informs how I draw the contours of shapes and I know what to look up if I'm forgetting a part that I'm already familiar with.

Definitely watch Scott's course and draw along, take your time and don't grind through it. Proko's course is an art course that's like a watered down Watts lecture.

No, I'm a different anon and OP but it's nice that I've seen the other anon echo the same things previously.

Look at the op artist's pixiv. They clearly do figure drawing like croquis/gesture/quick sketch along with drawing a lot from real life images. Learn to draw from life and learn to anime. They're separate skills built on the same foundation but feed back into each other. When you can bring 3d to stylized anime it takes your work to another level.
https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/57177721

Learn fundies like copying with measuring and measuring with your eye. Copy everything you can, when you get a handle on this, copy artists you like in any style. Anime styling is really more specific symbols for hair and facial features which are still based on the real anatomy and follow similar rules. The hardest part I had to learn that the West doesn't cover in materials as much (except animators) is focus on drawing shapes of the figure first with informed anatomical basis, then refine with your anatomy knowledge.

To exmplain my confusion with hitokaku.

Left (hitokaku) His paper stick figures are easy to undestand to be fair. But once you try to flesh them out and simplify the figure with basic shapes Hitokaku throws a blank at you and goes full draw the rest of the fucking owl.

And on the right Walt Reed actually explains how to simplyfy each part of the body with cilynders.

That's why I say hitokaku drives me crazy. But somehow a lot of people have huge gains with him.

I wish I were him anon. I've been collecting resources during the past weeks to start working on my skills and round up my industrial design sketching.

Also I'm not even French lmao that's just a meme location I placed on my twitter account just to follow japanese artists and the like

My gains with hitokaku all come from googletranslating his site.
He has several ways he teaches of simplifying the body, the paper doll is supposed to be completed with his two hearts method for straight forward poses or developed into his box form if the pose is in a more demanding perspective. Think of it more as a workframe/gesture than stablished margins.
I much prefer hitokaku to loomis desu, even when some things are lost in translation his explanations make a lot more sense to me and there's less arcane bs like loomis' infamous chapter on hands

I'm getting confused so I need a good answer:
Using reference are ok right? But when do they stop being considered ok? Is it still "my" drawing if I draw something while looking at a reference? I always considered that it isn't. That's why I barely used references before and it's slowing my progress down
However I won't do it if they aren't considered as part of """my""" drawing.
