Theory and practice are two different things. Understanding can be done quickly, but building the neural pathways (ie, “muscle memory), takes constant repetitive practice. The issue with this breakdown is that there is only so much speed that something can be done in. Just because you've copied some diagrams of femurs from a medical textbook doesn't mean you immediately understand the interesting ways that the leg can move and how it affects the surface of the skin and the definition of the muscles. I didn't say, at any moment, that one needs to copy diagrams. I used the word DECONSTRUCT. That is, to break down the object in a sum of prisms, all of which, as we may know, form planes. I have found the most improvement by simply drawing every day, working in studies, and not burning myself out. If I am constantly analyzing and self-critiquing, I get better each week. I draw from 2-6 hours usually. Do a quick warmup, and work on whatever I want for the day. I don't know why people talk about years/months though. Hours is the only thing that's important and even then you need to use a time tracking app to make it accurate.

Also, define 'advanced'? When people say it takes 'years to get good' they usually mean professional level skill, which requires like 2000-4000hours of work depending on how efficient/smart you are. After that the improvements suffer from diminishing returns, and you need to grind out thousands of hours to advance a tiny bit, that's why most artists after a certain level stop visibly improving.

measurable diminishing returns of learning capacity start at around 5-6hours of somewhat intense learning though, not 2h+. even if it were at 2h+, someone practicing 8hday will always win out in the end even if they've only efficiently learned for 4hours or something.

the other thing is, a big part of drawing is mechanical skill which doesn't require intense thinking and is therefore not mentally taxing. you can grind boxes all day with very minimum thought involved, same for stuff like gesture, copies, quicksketch, etc.

Oh, to get to where I am right now it took me more time than that. I was never very talented, so I had to make up for it with years of grinding.
What helped me the most was definitely drawing comics. They forced me to get out of my comfort zone.
What I was doing was to -Just Draw-. I was focusing mostly on perspective and gesture, while always keeping in mind body proportions. Everything else came later on.

I started to draw seriously pretty late in life (25+) so I didn't really focus on practice and training. Instead I used work as practice. I guess that's also a reason why I didn't get better quicker. I'm sure people with at least some talent could get at my level much quicker if they can focus on improvement instead of trying to meet deadlines.
On the other hand having to be proficient and fast had aslso it's benefits of course.

tl;dr Don't neglect fundamentals, but also don't stress too much about them (draw what you like, don't spend all your time just studying), try to stay out of your comfort zone, and most of all draw as much as possible.

you can learn one new thing per day, but it'll take you weeks to actually do it to good effect without assistance or crutches. this is primarily because you can only internalize concepts and embed muscle memory while you sleep.
for example: eyeballing anatomy/proportion until you can just slap a human shape down. you must first learn the basic form and figure of a (fit) human. then muscles, then skeleton, then skin as it bends and flexes. you can practice it, but it won't really click in your head until you've spent weeks studying what's right and wrong, as well as the motions to cleanly and confidently create the shapes you want, at the angles you want, and at the right intensity. you're worse off trying to cram it all into a day, or a week, since you can't internalize it all at once, you'll over study and most likely retain bad habits. figure drawing is widely taught and reinforced method for such a reason, it's simple yet can be refined and built upon.
personally, I've found myself taking multiple weeks off from drawing, only to come back and find I've noticeably improved in speed and quality despite not picking up a pencil. I had also gained new reference material from media I consume (mainly anon's lewd images) simply by looking at it a lot

I've drawn my whole life, like any other artist I guess. But it was always just winging stuff. I never really took lessons or actually thought that I could have a more analitical approach to improving.
I also never though I could live off it, so I studied other stuff. After a few years of civil engineering I understood I wasn't happy and tried industrial design instead. Something more akeen to art, but more grounded or something.
There my passion resurfaced and after graduating I got a job as an concept artist for a game dev studio. At first it was nice, but then I realized I didn't want to be justa cog in the system and went freelance (advertisement illustrator).
After a few years of that I completely by chance landed a gig for drawing porn comics. It was then that I realized I needed to take stuff more seriously and started studying fundamentals (that was about 8 years ago).
Since then I made huge leaps and I am the most motivated I've ever been in my life.

I studied most from physical books, yes. I tried more but the two that resonated with me were Loomis' Successful Drawing and Robertson's How to Draw.
I especially wanted to get better at perspective, and those books helped a ton.
Also, you are right about Proko's YT course. I learned a lot about anatomy form that too.
