I am really starting to like your stuff.
Drawing and values are coming along really nicely. I like your use of colors for flesh. The OP flesh colors are great. Very pleasing to look at. I like how your backgrounds are getting more simple and less distracting from what you are getting us to look at...the beauty of a naked female body.
Look like you are putting a stop to overthinking your choices and when u have something that looks good I encourage you to not go over it again as long as there aren’t any terrible drawing mistakes. May I make a request?
O.p. Painting... don’t touch the figure or top half of background. Do some else with that umberish ground.
All in all bravo brother.

mixing white gouache with watercolours to make them more opaque actually works or is it just a meme? i have a lot of watercolours and wanted to try gouache, but proper gouache paint is expensive as fuck in the third world shithole where i live so i was thinking about getting pic related to use with my watercolours and give them a more gouache look. any tradfags here tried this? is it worth it?

>> No.4505521

>>4505494
It works, it's not a meme, but with some caveats:
- Some colors will look more washed out that others, but you'll never get fully opaque with "straight from the tube" saturation.
- The white gouache should be very opaque on its own. Can't speak to that specific brand. It kinda still works with a shitty one, but you need to use more white and it will wash things out more.

It's worth trying. Feels very different from plain transparent watercolors, and for whatever reason I prefer it to acrylic,

they're just variations on a theme, if they were all the same I'd agree with you, but the placement of the figures is different in each of them, some have flat backgrounds, some are in landscapes, I'm just trying to eek out a pattern in the purchasing of nudes, and then I'll apply that to future ones, it's a learning process for all of them, but nudes get way more attention on eBay than any other kind of painting so it's worth knowing which ones are most popular.

Also most people on eBay don't ever bid on an item, they make an offer on it, so say a painting is on for $230, nobody is ever going to bid the full $230, they'll send you a private offer of $200. Very rarely does anything ever get bid on.

Eh, I guess. /trad/ is really more charcoal+painting+marker imo, but you've got the work taped off and it looks like you're using more than one (two) lead hardness, so I guess there's a good-faith effort to be /trad/, even if the drawing doesn't justify it. Pretty empty thread otherwise. Switch to charcoal and tackle a direct-observation still life and I'd be more welcoming. I haven't been to /beg/ in a long time though so IDK if there's any quality critique there anymore.

On the real, I once had an artist recommend against "whimmy" lines. If you're going to lay in value with hatching or tone, do so deliberately, don't just scribble till it looks dark enough. I just realized that's the base of a giant tree, it reads as a mountain. you gotta subordinate fore/mid/background using value, i.e. 0-3/4-6/7-9. Keep the hierarchy consistent.

>>4506041
The jar's shoulders are uneven and the neck+lid are closer to the right side than left. Highlight on the topleftmost lid is messy. Green color on bottom half is too green, doesn't have enough yellow to match top half. Base of jar is a fuckin mess, repaint it entirely.

the references I find all have no face, its very hard to find a reference that has a face that isn't some overly lit "art reference photo" or just straight up porn.

Try doing a wash of umber over the original acrylic and then wiping it away with rags to create a value under painting, that might cover enough of the acrylic, I would also try painting thicker, or maybe add many layers. but frankly, it would probably be better to just do a new painting from scratch.

>> No.4523073

by overly lit do you mean properly lit? I find it odd that you have reservations about painting references from porn considering that your references are LITERALLY porn from gonewild.

>I find it odd that you have reservations about painting references from porn considering that your references are LITERALLY porn from gonewild.
it takes a lot of sifting through crappy photos to find good ones, by "porn" I mean the kind of stuff you'd find on /s/, of like no shadows at all, porn lighting, shitty angle porn photos.

And most art reference things are not "properly lit", they're lit for chiaroscuro, which assuming you do it right is good for life drawing, but terrible for photo reference, because most of the time it just means 35% of the figure is in complete darkness. Add on top of that that most "art models" on the internet are ugly as sin, and it renders most of those photos completely useless.

The most luck I've had was finding girls whose bodies I liked, and trying to help them help me by drawing poses of them to do, or taking photos of myself in poses I'd like to see. But that's effort and requires me talking to someone, and most of the time it's easier just to pick the girl with the biggest boobs

>> No.4523251

>>4523087
>things are not "properly lit"
does this not produce a more interesting painting? if a face is lit too evenly with a camera flash then it becomes flat, right?

>> No.4523345

>>4523251
that's the challenge in finding a photo, most girls photograph themselves with absolutely no shadows on their body cause they're degenerates and want to look like children. Finding actual lighting on gonewild is incredibly hard, but for the most part when there is lighting on a gonewild picture it's not faux dramatic lighting, there's actual color and grain and value in the shadows other than 100% black. 1 in every 40 Gonewild pictures ends up being better than 100% of "art reference photos"

Most art reference photos like I said are trying to simulate the lighting you'd see in a drawing studio, but photography can't capture value range in shadows between 75-100% so it just turns everything black. That's great if you want to do shitty knockoffs of academic art from the late 1800s, not great if you actually want to make colorful paintings

i think i see what youre saying. the advice i got with photo portraits for painting was to sit someone near a sunny window and shoot with the flash off. im not sure at what point the black levels come into it, but im assuming taking them raw, before the jpg gets a chance to do anything to it, would also help.

so how about inventing a face to go on those figures?

>so how about inventing a face to go on those figures?
it ends up looking stupid because the body is "photoreal" at least to a certain extent, or there's a specificity to the lines and colors that makes the face from my imagination look stupid. I can draw a face, but I can't make it match the body without compromising the rest of the image. It just doesn't work. If I had models I would paint the full figure with a face, I think that's what people get crabby about is they think I can't paint faces, but if I have someone or something in front of me I can paint anything. Being able to draw from imagination is only useful to the extent that you make mistakes from reference. If you screw up a hand, you should know how to fix it without the model, but there is almost never a reason to work completely from your head unless you literally only do art to impress people with autism

I want to really dive into pen and ink, particularly with a brush and pen nibs. What do you recommend I get to start with? Pentel brush pen seems to be a great starter, but you can always just be cheap and get a fine brush and bottle of ink. The brush might actually give you more control then the brush pen but with the brush pen you don’t have to constantly dip it so it can feel more natural
