IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

grinding seems to be the only real way i've been able to make progress, also adapting tools. I can't imagine you can achieve this hyper realism with a graphite pencil alone, you need 2B-4B and darker colors of charcoal, charcoal dust, and some sort of smudging tool etc... I would also say the most important part is to practice construction. It's kinda neat to reverse image search your own image and get the actor or actress as a result.

You need to work with sharper shapes.

Right now your shadows are just smudges. Stop doing that. Sketch out where you want your shadows to be and then fill them in. It will force you to be more precise.

Also you don't have any midtone. For your highlights, only some of the skin should be the brightest white, but in your drawing it's more than half of his face that's pure white.

I recommend getting grey or tan shaded paper and some white chalk or colored pencil or something. Then you can add the highlights, and it'll be much easier to not "overexpose" the drawing, for lack of a better term.

Finish rendering this bad boy, get the values of the cast shadow and reflected light of the sphere to be as accurate as you can, and then grab a still life with some color and do that.

Just take a picture with your phone. People are gonna think you traced anyway. The whole point of Picasso and the whole contemporary art movement was because cameras made photorealistic painting obsolete. Drawing is about either drawing something that doesn't exist or drawing something stylized. Capturing the essence without merely copying. Playing with proportions for emphasis. Knowing what to accentuate and what to omit. To capture a likeness in the abstract.

Hi, sorry if I asked this before but this is my current level how do I improve?
I feel like I plateaued.

I've been stuck here for about a year if not longer.
I don't know how to improve.
People have said to work on your anatomy so I practised and tried to learn anatomy. Others have said to stop symbol drawing so i visualise and draw 3d shapes now. Others have said to add gesture, so I try to make them more dynamic. Others have said to try figure drawing, so I do that often now. Others have said to stop drawing anime and focus on real life people, and I even tried that.

You've got some cute animu girls there, now imagine something that multiple animu girls could do together, in a particular setting, and then draw that. Before you start, pick a painting you admire and try to emulate that coloring/rendering style. By trying to complete a project more ambitious than what you normally do, you will force yourself to learn new things.

You need to clean your edges.

Keep in mind a material that is very reflective like your castle will take the color of the things it's surrounded by, AKA the sky. Don't go with a saturated blue everywhere, mix it up with some desaturated colors.

Try to avoid blurred clouds. Also your castle perspective is looking down, so i threw a ground plane in there.

Welp if pic related is what you are talking about, all of that is kind of a lie innit ? You can't not symbol draw and do Pokemon characters at the same time, they literally have sticker faces in the games.

If you want to do all of that you can really do anime girls at the same time. You'll need to work on real life drawing, grinding some anatomy books, perspective fundies.

Yeah i recognize some quickpose in there. Ok anon, gestures are not really a good exercise to train form. This would be studies.

Slow down chief, take your time and analyse the forms in the reference. Pick one and do a deliberate study (if a figure sounds too complex start with objects).

You will find small clues as to where the horizon line is (here is probably somewhere at half height). Observe how her skin texture seems to describe a downward facing curve below her left ass cheek. How the texture seems to go the other side starting above the butt.

Just try to appreciate the model (trace it at first if you have to). But observe it carefully. To find the volume in space once you have your horizon line it's just a simple truth :

>things that are above the horizon line go downward when they turn away from the viewer. ellipse look down above the horizon line

>the reverse is true below the horizon line.

Just do some wireframing (like i did in that example). And maybe complement that with deliberate long drawing/value studies too.

Practice by looking at how light lands on the body.
I like to do it in grayscale sometimes so I can focus on just the light, and focus on colour seperately.

Be confident, start with a brush at 100% opacity, so that you can't overblend the colours.

Feel free to colour pick the original picture you're studying, look at what shade it is on the colour wheel and if you had the same part of your picture the same shade.

Did you use a reference for this? Now that you fixed your lines, it does look better now, and mistakes are more apparent which means you can address them. If you mirror your drawing horizontally, you can see that the eyes are uneven. In that view, the eye positioned away from the viewer (which means her left eye) must not be wider than its counterpart. Also, remember that ideally, the distance between the eyes must be equal to one eye width. This is assuming a front facing head, this distance decreases as the head turns to the side. In your drawing, the eyes are way too apart, fix their width, and place them closer. Also I can tell you have some idea on the form of the female head, keep it up.

It's a start. They still look feminine, a manifestation of your sameface syndrome. For the head to the left, the nose and mouth are too low. Remember that the bottom of the nose should be in line with the bottom of the ear. Also eyes are way too big. Female heads can be forgiving with large eyes, but for male heads you need to be more on point, smaller than what you usually draw. Lastly, avoid too much curves on male heads. Instead, use angles or straight lines to define the jawline, cheekbone, etc. I suggest drawing from reference, your visual library of male heads appears to be non-existent. It doesn't have to be all the time, mix it up with your usual routine of figure drawings.

Ok you can get decent faces done with minimal fundies anon. Even symbol drawing is fine if you can rotate it space. Basically if the features follow the direction of the "face plane", it's gonna look fine.

If you can't picture where to begin i'd recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBv5z0Y2odE and do the exercises in order. Just having that sheet of paper folded in space is gonna be sufficient to get a good anime face going.

Which are you asking about? For sight size you just use your stylus to measure with like you would anything else. For grids you just make sure that your ref and your canvas are the same size and then if you throw a 1"x1" grid on the ref you put the same size grid on your canvas. Just make sure the grid layer is locked so you don't accidentally paint on it for when it's time to take the grid off or paint over it.

>> No.4493696

this is bizarre. maybe can pass as modern art thing

for rendering you need to know where light source is in space and normals of surfaces.

>> No.4493705

>>4492841
Also idk what you mean by gridded book.

Ideally you want to get a photo and in traditional media you'd be putting a grid over it with plexiglass and clip that over it so you can take the grid off of your reference if it's on top of details you need to see. That way you could do value work as well as visual measuring.

I failed to mention the process is go in drawing the shapes of the objects and get the angles right, even if they're very general and you need to cut out pieces like you're sculpting with the smaller angles. Then when that's done you do the same with shadow as well as making out the brightest highlights. When it's time to fill out tones go background>shadows>midtones>highlights and then blend and finally render. Make sure you're not flattening forms out and you're drawing along with them so the grain of the paper or your paint strokes or whatever show form as best you can.
