IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

definitely can get a lot better in a year, but the follower thing might be hard depending on what you draw

usually fan art/coom art of new stuff is a good way to gain followers. for example animal crossing last month and now valorant seems to be really big right now and if that gets anywhere near overwatch levels of popularity it could be a good start

are japanese figure drawing books better than loomes, vilppu or any other western sources? I've browse thru them and the illustrations themselves are much more easier to understand even without knowing moonrunes. For the dude of the previous thread with the portrait :

>This is also my first time dealing with shading from a side angle but i think i picked something with too many lighting angles, what do anons think?

1) Don't try to sketch values yet. ("shading"). you should probably stick to drawing for now and train your eyes.

2) On that note a few pointers : don't try to sketch the curve, get the angle and go for it with a straight, confident line. Try to force yourself to accentuate those angles.

Why ? Because it will help you see the planes (the moment the surface changes direction) and thus help you when you are gonna put your values in. Also remember it's always easier to tone down a sketch than adding movement to it.

For example your chin lacks character because you tried to go for that perfect curve. Mine is less on model (bigger chin) but i accentuated it to show you when it curves back toward the neck.

For the hair, don't draw the strands, follow them and try to pick up the general movement of the entire mass of hair. Think of hair as a bunch of wide ribbons in space. (i drew a few arrows to show the movement).

Don't try to sketch the small details of the features. Once again try to pick up the form, it's more important to catch the direction of the lip/nose/eye etc ... than trying to get that strand of hair right.

TL;DR : concentrate on measuring and getting angles right. Bold straight lines and commit to them. It's more important to understand how the eye behave in space than tunnel-visionning on small details.

You really think someone from /beg/ will be able to see the forms in that photo? Half of your forms come from your understanding not from the photo. Useless advice for /beg/ who has no idea what the planes of the upper lip are supposed to be and the photo reference doesn't show them at all.

The point is, it's better to try and shoot for bold confident lines (even if you don't understand form yet). This'll force him to synthesize some shapes out of that photo even if it's not on point.

Same reasoning for accentuating the angles, force him to go for it. I really don't think it matters to get a perfect likeness at that level. The important part is getting forms, not getting them right.

The most uncanny part of those is that the eyes look like symbols and that the planes of some faces seem made up.
However, I think the most important skill is the ability to self-critique. What do (You) think is wrong with these? Note it down, so that next time you consciously avoid that problem.

It's in a bunch of these courses. Some demand certain pens and pencils, others just ask you to build a makeshift art studio with things that you didn't know even existed. Drills are fun. And yes you went overboard, your tried to shade and create the texture of the hair at the same time. I'd say concentrate on one first.

You demonstrate a good understanding of depth already (you understand what goes behind what, how the drills turn, how the fabric folds behind her head etc ...). It's a good start anon.

For the shading on the drills, just adding a top plane will allow you to have more interesting shadows (as the edges of the drills that face up will catch light). Also i would put the lightsource on the side of the character so the shadows on the rings are not symmetrical.

I tried to recreate your style for the demo. Keep it up anon.

The figure drawing is decent in itself, but your stylistic choices (are they?) are off putting. Youve been consistently doing these: eyes too apart, large forearms, non feminine hands, and hairs appearing like wet wigs. Are these designs deliberate or mistakes? Yes, when drawing from reference (especially a straightforward portrait like this one) i just throw lines and use the negative space to measure angles.

You don't really need the construction since, well, it's is right there under your nose, you are looking at it (the ref).

>I find myself sightsizing (as it is more effective) , completely taking construction out of the equation.

It's two different skills that do different things, training your eye doing study and picking up planes/shapes in a ref is super useful to build confidence in your linework.

Construction is useful when you need to block a pose using disparate refs (or no refs). It becomes important when you need to block a pose in perspective, interacting with something. the more complex the scene, the more construction you'll need.

It's perfectly fine to not do construction for studies anon.

I imagine a strong perspective means when the lines converge towards the vanishing point at a steep angle. Is that what you mean?

IMo the first one looks better. In the first one you could fix it by picking areas to have sharp edges. In the new one it’s pretty much one value or very subtle value change which you’d use more to shade a soft face than clothing. I’d redline or paint over it but I’m working on my own crap atm. Also I’m prob not even good enough to critique so take what I say with a heavy dose of salt.

Also I know the irony about talking about edges and shit when my art is soft brush mush...

Learn their anatomy, first abs a re not identical, they change from person to person and can have slight differences even o none side to the other on the same person. Abs run down starting from the bottom of the sternum down to the pelvis in a vertical line. The first 2 rows curve upwards at the top and turn get straight at the middle.

Also, like any other muscle, abs will change their shape depending on the posture the person is making if you bend backwards they smooth out if you bend forward slightly flex them the become visible. If you bend to the side that side becomes squished.

But yeah, to echo several people's points, learn the anatomy above all else. Pay attention specifically to how the muscles pull and stretch in relation to each other. Each one affects the next. And as far as technique itself goes, hint at shapes but (almost) never outline them entirely. Focus on the deeper creases and sharper edges.

Some tips for you Mugi

Eyebrows are too thick which gives her a more masculine feel, same goes to the large mouth with the lips. Contrary to popular belief males can also have big and thick lips but generally having a bigger mouth is considered to be a masculine trait. Hair a bit too confusing too, this thin bobcut gives a more simple appearance.

Eyes are bit wonky, usual the upper eyebrow sits on the top outer corner if one looks straight at a person, on your it feels like she is looking upwards bu the position of the head and the eyeball does not.

Overall yours does have quite a feminine appearance but it has some minor uncanny feels around it.

Here is my quick attempt to change it as I said.

Ok here this might explain it better.

You are putting the eyelashes a the far outer corner of the eye which means that the eye gives us the feeling as if it is half closed or looking from an upper angle. Normally eyelashes are the upper outer corner of the eye even if stylized.

If you look at the examples you will see that the upper corners of the eyeball (even the white areas) are somewhat shaded and only the lower part is seriously lit up. This is because the eyeball is.. well a "ball" and the upper side is cast into a shadow by the eyelid and the lashes, while the middle area pokes out and catches lights. In animu the lower area usually lit up the most and in color because that collects most of the reflected light from the environment. Yet if you look at it the majority is black or dark.

Did this help?

It does not matter. I've seen teenagers and grandmas produce similar things to >>4490452 just by avoiding symbols and drawing the shapes they see. People tend to screw up when they get impatient or lazy and don't measure or pay enough attention.

not really. idk, maybe it's because anon's only posted very close up shots, or because i'm not seeing the reference, but there's not that characteristic distortion.
even if you measure, even if you look really close at your reference, your eyes just aren't picking up things properly.
fuck maybe i'm retarded, but i used to spend hours looking at references only to come back two days later and realise how fucked it was. and queue overcorrection, undercorrection, for eternity, until i finally gave up. (partly motor function, partly not).
>>4490467
well, it's just a trend i'm tending to see.
it seems pretty intuitive to me-- that the older you've gotten, the more you've tended to see the 'rules' of the objects around you.
i stopped drawing when i was like 14, and then i picked it up again when i was 16. and by that point i was noticeably better at drawing than before
>impossible to learn after
probably a brain plasticity meme. of course, it's always better to start as early as possible. like, when you're 4 or something.

Yea, there are different goals. If you want to be the top 1% you probably needed to start when you were young. If you want to be good enough to trick a vast majority of people into thinking you're good, you can probably start whenever though.

I remember watching a video where someone said something like that for the 10,000 hour rule. The plebs can hardly ever tell the difference between someone with 2,000 hours and 10,000 hours. I feel like it has a lot to do with the 80-20 rule, where the majority of the time spent on a project is spent on ironing out that last 20%.

But then again, maybe I'm just coping, I started late as well.

ok here's my take on it :
There are a few signifiers that read as strong features (some would say masculine features). Thick not tapered eyebrows, thin eyelashes, very big and defined lips, even when stretched, strong jaw but with a round chin.

I think the 2 main things are that lip and the shape of the head (jaw + hair shapes).

The lip : This is a big plump lip with a very deep philcrum. The fact she is showing her chompers with a big smile makes it so the viewer imagine they are even bigger when closed ==> uncanny. Also the fact the lips are the darkest value on your drawing gives the impression she is sporting black lipstick. (thus "clownish" look). Combined with the lack of emphasis on the eyes, this gives a weird unbalance "way too much make up" look.

The shapes : The hair has that weird design dissonance in which you have that nice soft bowl cut with angular spikes on top. The jaw is strong (comes at an angle when going toward the chin) but the chin is round, you are stuck in that sort of middle ground. These two elements create some ambiguity.

I tried to keep the maximum of your design intact for pic related.

this sort of thing is deeply subjective. i love a lot of art, aside from number of hours.
when i said that it's best to start early, i mean that if art is something you enjoy, it's sad to think that it took someone so long to discover it. and also that this is a personal journey; it's a matter of having a dialogue with your own work. it's going to get cut off at some point, for sure, and again in the abstract maybe it's sad to think of all the conversations you could've had with yourself. but whether you start today or in the womb, there are infinite conversations you're going to miss out on. if that makes sense.

and also, i feel like children are really deprived of the joy of having hobbies nowadays. it's all just brain-fry. well, that's mostly everyone, but it's seen as abuse or at least sad when a kid has a hobby.
