How do I get better at using modeling tone? I tried it and I think this looks very strange.

Top left is just using only the pencil brush and then bottom right I tried to use the smudge tool and then pop back in some of the lights. Not sure which looks better

you just have to keep going anon, even if its small goals just try to tackle them.
it's better to take risks and make a bad drawing than it is to sit in a comfortable place but never progress past that point otherwise you will never learn anything.
for every drawing an artist does they are content with there will be 10 to 100 others that they dislike or hate.

I've been trying to make charcoal drawings but I realized all my drawings, even the painted ones, looks a little bit... Foggy.

Among the changes I see, is shoulders are added, collar lines are erased more hair is added, the black background helps a lot, checks are rounded and more hair and stuff. I think chin is also changed ever so slightly.

keep your values really simple at the beggining, constructing a face with like 3 or 4 values can be really fun

.... What do you mean? How to do value studies and the like?

Just pull up a black and white image, paint your canvas a background color, block in major values, work from big to small, and fiddle around until it looks okay.

Marco Bucci's 10 Minutes to Better Painting has a great series on stuff like this. Rest is mileage.

Been screwing around with this sort of perspective for a while.
But it's never looked quite right to me.
What I wanted to accomplish was a birds eye view where the groundplane between the segments was still visible.
The problem is always either the the segments overlap obscuring the groundplance or that the ellipses look funky as fuck.
Think it might have to do with the distance between segments, the height of the segments and the ellipses being in a too extreme perspective for the perspective I actually want to draw in.
Too tired to figure it out today, would love to hear some input.

You have a very common problem where you are slanting the face in one direction. Every face you draw probably has this problem. You need to flip the canvas or look at it in a mirror. I would guess it's because you're not defining the planes of the face enough, azns tend to have softer and rounder faces with more curved transitions, while whites, blacks, natives, etc generally have bolder and more defined features, especially the men. maybe it's that?

The cheekbones are also very broad, and the eyes dark with some room between them and the sides of the head. I would also guess the eyelid could be more pronounced and defined

I'm going to ignore the fact that you're being strangely condescending while calling the trapezius the "trapezoid", and rather point out that while knowing what the traps are and where they are located is common knowledge, the fact that their "striations are broken up by the seventh cervical vertebrae" is definitely not something every artist must know in order to draw well (although I'm sure many do). The phrasing and condescension is definitely what puts that whole dialogue in "weird flex" territory, though

use your pencil in the air to help. hold it parallel with your face and check how things line up, which way angles actually slant, how drastic curves really are. trace over things in the air as if you were drawing on glass to find what the real shape that's hitting your eyes is.

I can't draw really. Even when I do simple shapes and lines in a cartoon style everything is awkward and there is no sense of proper size and perspective. It's clumsy. I've always had messy handwriting and I'm worried that this will never really be fixed. Anons, please give me some practical solutions to make things work. I've been an "artist" for only about a month and can make a few somewhat appealing small doodles with freehand, but I can't build anything worthwhile that looks planned or proper. I've looked at the basic art fundamental lessons but it hasn't stopped me from being clumsy and spontaneous.

i know, it's difficult because I'll stare at the picture for a while trying to note what it is i should be drawing but the second i look away from the image to my paper its like my brain just flushes the toilet and all of it goes out the window until eventually everything turns into a completely new image than it should be.
I'm trying the method of breaking down images into basic shapes, but even that is difficult for me to do and at that point I'm literally just drawing over the picture mindlessly.
I think i might just be a bit mentally stupid.

i think it's also good to never really shy away from something, if you have an idea you should always try to draw it and never compromise on exactly what you want, even if you know it'll look bad.
I'm just stuck trying to get out of drawing from my head and also tagging my self esteem along with the "art" i produce, both of which are hard to do.

For drawing not really, I just use the brush tool and draw like I would traditionally.
As for shading still trying to figure out how to do that best digitally,
The one on the left is directly painted over the drawing
and the one on the right I tried creating a new layer defining the borders of the figure filled it in with a base value and then created a clipping mask layer to push around the darker and lighter values.
I don't actually think I can give you any advice since you work fundamentally different from me never worked with the pen-tool since I always thought it isn't really good for anything.
The closest I could think of that was somewhat like what you're doing with good results was https://youtu.be/HSAhbX6Ubgw
But I feel like you really need to know what you're doing on a fundamental level to pull that off.

Start somewhere and trace the outline/forms with your eyes as you do it with your hand on the paper.

why are begs like you always stuck on those minor details.

i just showed you how to introduce form and perspective and mood with a quick overpaint. take as much as you can get from that and dont get lost in details like missing shadows (but youre actually right though)

there are tons of resources online, quarantine isnt even remotely close to being a justifiable excuse.

you need anatomy to get the feel right, not to get the anatomy right.

if you cant see how youre lacking dynamic in your painting, i STRONGLY advise you to improve your visual library. thats actually the most fun part about art. just soaking in other peoples art and mentally jerk off to pretty stuff.

watch some videos. so much to do.

dont you have this itch to get that feel into your painting? like the "good" artists seem to be able to do

nipple type, facial type. its preference. or style or whatever. focus on that after you can render simple forms. after you know how to chose sexy colors. after you know how to construct a sexy gesture.

and yes i need to work on that too.

just dont be so anti. and try to consume everything around you. like a sponge.

again: DONT FOCUS ON DETAILS SO SOON. GET THE BIGGER PICTURE RIGHT.
