I don't like how inking looks too clean compared to the messy sketches. Most appealing inking is Corto Maltese's artstyle which retains the free form of a sketch. Should I keep return to inking and see where that takes me?

The pose is less dynamic than all my trials but it does not feel to wrong to me.

You lack on all aspects of drawing and painting (anatomy, proportions, composition, gesture, light and color) pretty much the same, which is very good.
So keep on studying little by little on every aspect and keep implying that updated knowledge to your work and you will get somewhere.

Good luck man!

If the lighting is so bright that his left arm has such value, I think the part of the hood on the ground should be lighter, no? (And there's a lantern right above it too).
Maybe add some highlight on the arms as there would be lights emitting from the eyes.
Colors of left and right arms are not consistent but I'm not sure if that's your intention.
Anyway I like it, keep it up.

Nice head.
The torso is decent. His left chest muscle should be stretched a bit more than his right counter part.
Try moving your elbow backward with your left arm and touch your chest, you can feel your muscle stretching.
The muscles are a kind of all over the place, especially the cylinder biceps on his right arm.
The hip is broken though.

I do agree that the pose isn't particularly interesting. I also don't like the face much. That said, I adore the background. Loving the duality of the natural and the spooky castle stuff, with the tree being both natural and beautiful on one hand and somewhat distorted in the middle, becoming more and more empty. So yeah, if anything, I'd say, work on your faces, not that I'm one to talk.
>>4470939
I can't quite articulate what it is, but I think there's something about the contrast between smoother gradients and very sharp lines that annoys me. Especially something about the open eye and the central line of the mouth. Also, I really see the emotion in the closed eye, while the right seems completely emotionless to me. Aside from that, I love your coloring and shading and I definitely think I get a sense of what it's trying to convey.
>>4473355
That's good shit. Gives me the impression of a sculpture. Also love the slight exaggeration in the expression.
>>4470654
Well, I've done a bunch of critiquing, even though my own stuff is far from anything special. Did a request with a more interesting style than usual (my usual stuff being pretty standard two-tone anime-style fare and compared to my other stuff, nobody gives a shit about it.

The rendering looks great. The left part looks a bit rushed compared to how tight the rendering of the face is. And I think there is too much contrast because of the white background. It would be less harsh with a light gray background which would allow you to use white for highlights. Impressive work anyway.

>>4472114
Awesome work. I agree with the other anon, the sky is too saturated. Overall the values are too similar which makes the image difficult to read. I think it needs more differentiation between light and shade for it to work.

>>4470952
This looks lovely too. There are nice subtleties in the grass. The linework for the background elements is too rushed though. Especially on the trees. It flattens the picture. Maybe draw it more carefully like you did for the characters or try to remove it entirely. Compositionally the girl is slightly too close to the edge of the frame. I feel like it needs more negative space overall.

Yep, looks much better. The tree texture still feels a little flat. Since the trunk is cylindrical the texture should be compressed around the edges. But that's mostly nitpicking. When I talked about empty space it was mostly about giving more breathing room to the girl since the flower is almost tangent to the edge of the canvas. It doesn't matter all that much since the main narrative element seems to be the wolf's head. It looks quite good anyway

>> No.4478981

Great, thank you. I'll still fix the trees and I'll see what I can do to help the girl. She does conflict unpleasantly with the side and makes it kind of hard to look at her. If anything, I'll just move them more center-focus.

Pic related is some tweaks I would do.

1. Drawing on a grey background is just asking for a muddy drawing. Try throwing in a more decisive background, maybe a darker brown or lighter yellow (from his jackets emblems). Consider pumping up the saturation of the reds in his face.

2. Flip your canvas. If you flip your canvas, you'll see that the structure of the face is slightly off, which throws off the whole face. The biggest offense here is that most of his face is drawn to look like its facing to the left. However, the far side of his face is drawn as if it were head-on. The brow, the eyes, and the cheek are drawn in a way that doesn't wrap around the structure of the head. That side of the face goes from light-to-dark way too quickly, which flattens an area that shouldn't be flat. Try using a smoother gradation

3. Going off #2 - as it stands, the nose looks real wonky. There shouldn't be such a sharp shadow going down the side of it. His right (our left) nostril is basically non existent. Again - it looks like the nose was drawn at an angle that the rest of the face isn't in. Add some mass to his right nostril to balance things out.

4. Again - off #2, you should just redraw his right eye (our left). Flipping the canvas will show you how wonky it is & how it's inconsistent with the other eye.

4. Some of the really dark values don't make any sense in regards to how dark they are. Lighten some of them up (especially on the neck).

Hope this helps!

Not a whole lot to critique, since it's still real rough.

It could really benefit from a little bit of a wider range of values, and a few even higher value highlights to make certain things pop (don't overdo it though, I enjoy the overall midtones!).

Some shadows seem odd, particularly on his neck. They're oddly sharp.

A simple rimlight would fit in well, but that's a personal choice.

1. Find a figurine in a pose you like
2. Overlay a grid on top
3. Generate a blank canvas and paste the grid on a separate layer
4. Sketch the figure in, following the grid to ensure accuracy
5. Swap to a brush and get to work

I used an airbrush, blur tool, and a custom brush which mimics knife blend on a palette. I changed a few things from the original, like adding nipples instead of pasties, changed some of proportions etc.

I already draw, I'm doing this to learn to paint.

Was a pencil fag most of my life. Got a tablet 2 years ago, rejected learning how to paint properly because I thought I'd missed the boat on it a long time ago, Turns out I'm retarded so now I'm doing stuff like >>4485658 to try and get a better grasp on value and painting techniques. - A General PSA -

I would just like to remind you people that taking advice from strangers on this board is a pretty bead idea in the first place. If None of you have noticed yet, there is no one great frequenting this board and the general skill level of posts has not improved in the last eight or so years. This is because this board holds no appeal to those on a higher skill level and naturally these people will leave the board and go elsewhere; mainly for inspiration and less for critique.

You might be wondering where these people go and what alternative communities exist for the middling artist and I can assure you that there is really no place (on the internet) better than this one. There exists no other platform for anonymous critique and it is anonymity that remains this boards highest and most effective quality. No one can make any posts without the authority gained from the merit of their own written word. The only true alternative source for critique is in fact, real life. I could source my own experience as a college educated classically trained painter, but this is the internet so I'm lying. The problem with real life is that people are concerned with feelings and not hurting them and this is the main advantage of anonymous posting. There is no consequence to hurting someones feelings in an anonymous platform. So you might be wondering, what really is the best source for critique?

It's you stupid. You are responsible for enabling your own self improvement. That is the secret that tens of thousands to a hundred thousand dollars worth of education should be preparing you for. It really is a magical answer, but in the end it should make some sense that you should be the most effective person at identifying your own weaknesses.

This is an +18 board. If you want to improve, you should train like an adult. Cut the degenerate Chinese cartoons and do some proper still life paintings. If it doesn't look like a photograph or better, keep painting.

- PSA Cont. -

Drawing from life will always be the express route to getting gud. You may not like it, but it's what peak effective learning looks like. It is boring and a good amount of the time, you will not enjoy what you are doing. This is all part of it. In the end there is no excuse that you can make for your own failings because in emulating real life, your reference is real and definite. you can't fall back on your style or your technique for excuses. In the end, you will be a mean green drawing machine and you will not want to go back to drawing your Chinese cartoons because you will experience a religious enlightenment in higher art. Your inspiration will come from god tier plein air painters or the classic academic drawings of past masters. You will grow as an artist and as a person. You just need to step outside of your comfort zone and admit you're not just bad, but terrible.

Deliver yourself from degeneracy and mediocrity. Draw from life. Maybe even one day, a qt3.14 will ask you to draw her like one of your french girls and you will do it. And then you will do her.

But first. Draw your still lives. Pay your dues. Leave the anime behind, you won't need it where you're going.

Adding to what the other guy said. The joint where the humerus connects to the shoulder is mostly just bone and skin, and should be (more or less) directly above the center of the arm. Your shoulder curve starts a wee bit too early.

I'd either bend the arm outwards some to make the joints meet, or you could push the "point" of the shoulder wideer out to meet the arm. All in all though, nice job my man.

I really want to improve but I rarely get any critiques/redlines here...

>> No.4488302

>>4488265
How much of this did you lift from reference and how much of it did you make up on the fly? There's an uneven quality to the whole thing that throws it off. Some areas are very well made, others are terrible. It doesn't line up very well.

You've put in some areas too much outline detail with an even thickness to line quality that makes it seem very flat. The boys right leg and woman's left leg are examples of that.

Lastly, and most obviously, The proportions of the boy don't make any sense. Look at the size of his hands, head, and feet, and compare it to the length of his body.

Proportions of the woman can also be improved but that's a separate thing.

>> No.4488343

>>4488302
Thank you very much! I used reference for the womans left hand (took a photo of my own holding my stylus).
I see how the boys proportions are wack, I think his legs are too long, I'll shorten them. And the womans right leg needs a complete rework.
What do you mean with the line thickness? I don't quite understand.

>> No.4488371

>>4488343
>Thank you very much! I used reference for the womans left hand (took a photo of my own holding my stylus).

That is the area that I saw as being most developed compared to the rest. If you could get the other focal parts to look like that, that would be awesome. Just my opinion.

>What do you mean with the line thickness? I don't quite understand.

This is easier said than done so don't take this as gospel, but it goes something like this.

You've done an outline of the two figures and the line thickness needs to be adjusted based on what you want to show.

1. If you want to show the effect of light without rendering anything, you can have thin lines where the form receives the light at the edge (rim lighting). Where two forms meet and are pressing against one another, like her breast and his chest, you can have that be thicker to indicate a deep concavity/occlusion shadow.

2. If you want to show depth, you can have edges closer to the viewer be thicker, and edges further in space be thinner.

3. Variations of the two which is most often what is used, because you need to play around with it anyway to achieve an effect that looks "good" (highly subjective).

You have some line variance in her hand which is more or less what I'm talking about already. However, the over all effect that you currently have is that the two figures are "cut out" because the line thickness is pretty much consistent around them, without enough variation. Her leg is receding in space, but the line thickness is exactly the same throughout.

Some people do this for a "poster" like effect, but I don't think you're going for that.

Here's a book you'll like. Scroll down to "Line Weight":

Very cool design. One thing I would change is to give a different treatment to character and background. Despite being darker, the surrounding appears to have a similar level of detail as the main subject. Not sure if this is a WIP or finished piece but If you want to refine this painting, try giving the character more defined edges. Use a smaller brush and add more contrast to the elements that are closer to the viewer (the tail for example).

Leave it for now then go back to it a week later, good just muddy, make sure to group shadows and light don’t keep your values too messy

Geez you all are so good at art. I wish I could create pieces like you guys. Do you see any striking issues that I should focus on? This is my third drawing since middle school btw.

dont draw on lined paper. it devalues the work immediately. also resize photos.

>>4489036
I love this, it has a comfy feel to it while the subject is serious. great stylization

>>4489325
love it so far

you did a presentation of a character, as if we are looking at him straight on. The pose is stiff, you can avoid that by drawing a gesture line through the whole body. Proportions / anatomy / perspective, that's what you should focus on

drew this today, used yoshitaka amanos drawing as a reference, added the snake crown. I like the idea so far

composition is strange, maybe crop a lot the area to the left. Also you need some sharp edges in there. everything look ssoft.

Some perspective issues as well. The mouth is on a different plane than the rest. And the ear is too far back

Yeah I was having trouble getting the light right without making it taking too much attention away from the rest of the picture, its still not perfect but its done for now.

I haven't been painting much anymore, depression makes it difficult to want to do anything.
So I tried to express that and this is what I got.

I love this one anon

This is cool you did a good portrayal of the subject although I feel like the semi-circle in the background kind of takes away from the hopeless feeling you were trying to convey

It's good I'd just remove the pupils and cornea from the eyes as they look a little goofy, ominous and I think it look more sbooby like evil dead styled deadites though you do what you wish as it's lookin pretty fuckin cool.
