IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Gonna post this study here for critique. trying to advance my gesture into forms and adding light and shadows.
I don't have a good eye for light and shadow yet just started some lessons from Huston like 2 days ago
I'm looking into 100% copy of model like proko.
Help.

You should have actually drawn the far arm instead of just drawing scribbles.
Ass too long and square.
I feel like you were trying to be expressive and artsy here but honestly at the /beg/ level that stuff will just get in the way of communicating the figure clearly. It becomes a crutch to (poorly) hide your mistakes rather than a tool to make the drawing better. Try to be more clear next time, use cleaner and less dramatic lighting, clearly delineate where all of the forms start and stop, etc.

it not that man, its just like why worry about drawing 3D heads in loomis when you can't consistently draw a normalish looking 2D circle ?
don't get me wrong, don't just grind 2D circles, that's a massive waste of time BUT do practice the act of drawing a basic circle alongside loomis until you consistently draw ones that both better resemble circles and have a sense of uniformity to them.
break everything down into the ultimate base form and start from there, another example is straight lines to boxes to buildings.
That way it'll all come together for more advanced concepts, just remember to draw stuff you actually want to for fun alongside your practice drawings, otherwise you'll burn yourself out.

I'm not telling you to stop doing those things, its good to have variety in your drawing and to tackle something you may not be competent enough to accurately draw both for fun and to test yourself, don't be afraid to make a bad drawing.
I just happened to notice most your circles have no consistency and don't look very circular, so i'd suggest starting there for actual practice drawings.
just don't grind for the perfect circle (music pun intended) because it doesn't exist, just try to get to a general level of quality that is alright and then move on to another area of focus like drawing singular straight lines.

those top two hands with the flexing arm are looking rather okay, but the one on the left or right of it isn't

you're having both shape and perspective issues

try filling several pages with boxes rotated in space, without chicken scratching the lines

a hand can be approximated to a box with a thumb sticking out, if the fingers aren't doing anything crazy

if you figure out how to rotate the box, you won't have issues like top left

also god damn those fingers in the middle are too long

Add to that that who is /beg/ and who is /int/ isn't actually clearly defined and somewhat subjective and suddenly everyone has an opinion on where you belong.

stop looking at the end result of an artists labours and labelling it as "yeah they can just draw".
most of the super in depth art put out by manga/comic authors is the result of hours of formation of the final product built upon countless drawings the creator did while young.
the guy who illustrates for one punch man has fantastic art but has talked about spending upwards of ten hours a day on just a few panels, same with muira of berserk fame and countless others.
yes you can be born with talent, but provided you aren't physically disabled you can sure as hell improve your art a lot if your prepared to put the time into it.

>there is no such thing as /int/. You can either draw or you can't.
I think you're just shuffling words around, if it's "beg" vs. "int" or "can draw" vs. "cannot draw"
The problem remains the same that it's arbitrary and subjective, so that for a hundred people you get a hundred opinions as to what camp someone belongs in.

I was explaining why I think the /int/ general failed, not justifying it's existence or the existence of a ranking system.
If anything /int/ merely escalated the problem it was trying to solve.
The problem is the incessant "you don't belong here" to the point where that's the only thing some people will ever hear.
The solution is for those who say that to realize that it's debatable and to chill.
And for anyone else to post where-ever they want and ignore gatekeepers.

>>4479186
I'm going through Hampton and a bit of Bridgman, unfortunately Hampton's Arm/Leg segments are much less structured and not comprehensive, so I've been watching Prokos vids on those.

what you pick for anatomy doesnt matter too much, just remember to focus on learning forms + attachments + insertions + action of muscles and underlying bone
(although a lot of this is basically just overkill if you want to just draw cute anime girls)

>>4479205
That depends -> bridgman is very good for learning how to draw figures with a real sense of weight, and interlocking the various muscles and bones together with solidity.

I think what you're trying to get at is moreso whether studying anatomy in general is worthwhile, and the answer is both yes... and no.
If you draw people, you can get by just knowing the basics of major muscle groups, etc, but there'll always be a deeper layer of reality that will make your works more believable.
Small example: the Tibula and Fibula connect to the foot, forming the ankle from their bony protrusions. BUT the Fibula attaches lower, so the ankle is actually asymmetrical. Not only does this look better, but is more realistic.

If by general art you want to draw everything except people, then feel free to go through dynamic sketching or w/e.
But we're so hardwired to find people interesting that I think its worthwhile to spend a little time to learn to draw them.

you need to know anatomy before trying to stylize the body, idk how is that not obvious, stylization doesnt mean i make my own rules if you separate the ribacage that hight and make that kind of blob shape at the end it looks like theres a huge empty gap with the pelvis the lats fill that void and they are attached way higher, you made her abs wide as fuck i mean they can be wide but not that wide the legs have no form they look like logs, the knees are the worst , theres a gap between the muscles (quads) and the calves, your calves in the right leg is way past the knee level thats not anatomically correct that's not how you stylize thats just your poor anatomy, the elbows and the muscles surrounding it like the biceps, forearm are wrongly attached you literally guessed there you don't even know how does these muscles attach, the forearm muscle on the right arm doesn't overlap the elbow bone that high and the bicep does't make that fold unless it were fat and on the left arm the elbow is coming from one side pointing almost at the viewer that shit aint stylizing.

pic.in the top the colored areas/muscles remain in the same place it's just the size that changes in them however the ribcage is larger and so the pelvis and arms if make then fatter it will look off the legs can be made more thicker but the pelvis should be wider for that or it will like your pic its like they have a rubber band around, so you see how things change differently you need to find the balance but you don't even know the anatomy that well yet.you probably wont even notice half the shit i spoke so the best you can do is use a ref and compare, problem is that depending on how stylized you are looking for you might not find it or it could be a bad stylizitation and it will fuck you instead since you cant't recognize normal anatomy.

Firstly, your artwork is extremely flat due to a bad mix of values, it is all way too light and not enough dark. go into whatever your art program uis and make the saturation go all the way down to when its grey scale and see the areas that can use deeper and darker shadows.

Secondly, your colors are very poorly put together, this goes back to mostly color theory, reds would compliment your skin for the character better then purples and oranges.

Thirdly, your choice of blending for the hair and face is extremely questionable, you would be better off with your "style" to go with a cleaner look.

Also the lighting doesnt make sense on your piece, why is there a shadow on your shoulder, why is the light diagonal on the hair bun, but its facing forward on the scalp.

I hope this helps

"Flatness" usually stems from an incorrect underlying structure first and foremost. Take away all the color and figure out how to make your linework alone look not-flat. Correct values flow much easier from a correct underlying structure.
Also get in the habit of flipping the canvas a lot. If you flip the canvas and something immediately jumps out at you and you go "oh god what is that", then you need to fix that area.

Your nose in particular is very flattened out. In the reference it's clearly pointing away from the viewer a bit, since we see more of one side of the nose than the other; it's not just that one side has more shadow, rather that plane of the nose actually takes up more space in the page. In anime noses you typically just outline the more distant edge of the nose and draw a dot or something for the closer nostril, there are lots of examples to look at.
I'm sure something is wrong with the eyes but I don't know exactly what.

spend a silly amount of time doing it, stopping every little bit to look at it squinting from afar, making sure you dont lose track of the whole composition.

really , like, spend an unreasonable amount of time on the drawing, keeping in mind that you can always go darker, but you generally cant go back if its too dark.

do passes trough the whole drawing improving the contrast between darkest and least dark, slowly working a gradient.

the people who do this in human timescales did it like this first and slowly improved or were born gifted which is not your case.

just keep at it

I think you are suffering the same issues as I am also suffering right now, when you attempt to finish a drawing, your lines become thick, brash and repeated and it kills any line weight that may have existed in your sketch and hurts the look of your final drawing.

When I am analyzing myself and why I did that, I think it comes from a lack of confidence because I tend to blunder through certain details that I am not good at, the sketch comes out looking good because the repeated lines I did make it looks like what I envisioned in my mind but in reality I have no fucking idea what I am drawing.

Hope this helps, you are definitely better than me though.

I really don't think so. perspective is inherent in references; you're going to see obfuscation, distortion and all of that.
I'm not good, but my perspective and anatomy has gotten way better over the years ; i've never read an art book in my life-- i've just drawn from movie screencaps, things like that.

the meme of breaking these things down into hard categories-- like structure, anatomy, perspective, etc. that's theory. but that's all there when you draw from life-- that's in front of you.

separate by intertwined: theory isn't in nature. 'perspective' isn't in nature. when you read that book, you're not peering into the fabric of the universe. so nobody figured out anything.
babies figure out perspective when they learn object permanence; and if you keep paying attention, you'll learn more. that's all there is to it.
