IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

I just looked at the works of Leonardo's teacher, Verrocchio, and his style is literally the fucking same as Leonardo. Da Vinchi just copied his teacher and just added more anatomy.

Should I just be copying other artists and changing things a little bit? Is there nothing original in this world?

I'm a complete /beg/ reading Hampton's book and watching his CGMA lecture on gesture drawing. Here are a few that I did.

It feels like when I'm watching him, I can do what he's doing as well. But once I put my pencil down, I can never get the exact picture that I want. I pushed through with 4 gesture drawings anyway. I'm using some references from Steve Huston's figure drawing NMA videos.

imo hampton is very good for construction, but his explanation of gesture is not good for a beginner to really wrap their head around the idea.

most artists are building forms with their gestures so to you it may look like you need to be doing more than you are, basically forcing contour where it doesn't need to be. vilppu really helped me understand this since I had the same troubles because gesture is so vague.

take the pic for example, you need to focus on finding the flow of movement rather than containing it. dont even think about contour, just find the vein of the pose.

I think it's more important to have a solid construction. I haven't drawn in a year so forgive me for my trash.

The point is you want to tse contour light contour lines to make sure your drawing looks 3D and then ultimately you want to shade in your values. Cartoons and the likes use different methods like line-thickness and other things to give the illusion of depth.

in not trying to be malicious but at your current level it's not like any actual feedback can be given, go study your basics before drawing humans and once you can actually resemble something humanesce then post it so you can get actual feedback that will help you.

It's in the first lesson, he defines it as the pointless redrawing of a exercise in the pursuit of perfection of whatever it is.
He argues that if that same amount of time done grinding was distributed throughout the practice of multiple differing exercises you would in fact have a better grasp on drawing as a whole as apposed to someone who for example drew nothing but 2000 boxes a day.
By far his best advice is to not draw lines slow though, the slower you draw them the more the margin of error increases as the brain tries to course correct on what it thinks is right, he says to visualise the line as a whole and draw it in one stroke to avoid this, even if it looks horrible and wobbly to start with.

putting the nose lower fixes a lot of the proportion issues; the forehead is a bit tall but not by too much, you can get away with it

i'd bring the *ear* closer in rather than moving the eyes up (i feel they're already a bit too high up), that will help establish the planes of the head better

the ear starts approximately at the halfway point of the side of the head, and usually lines up with the eyebrows and the bottom of the nose in height

also be careful, since she's looking a slight bit up, we'll see the flat bottom of the jaw plane, straight from the chin to about a third of the neck (pink in the pic)

i drew her with human ears because that's what i know how to draw, but you should just morph that ear into a long ass triangle

I'm very conflicted watching this because of the planner. I'm not certain if this was stolen from somebody else to make fun of here or if this is legit. This lacks any type of gesture, lines are extremely rough, none of it seems in place...

It's okay to let fly your imagination on some 'OC' but if you're a beginner it's not a crime to copy from somebody else or real life when you're learning regardless of what people here might lure you in. I see you used a little bit of construction but that ain't it chief, you have to learn proper construction and use reference blend in both until you're good enough to start creating from imagination because it's a hard task.

If you took this from someone else you're a fucking piece trash fuck you, you piece of shit if you only knew how bad things really are for somebody to draw on a planner which probably belongs to a family member like a granny or an older parent. If this is the real deal keep going strong my man.

yes, the big thing is that you have to account for the differences whenever you listen to somebody's advice. any dynamic sketching type shit where people want you to put down decisive lines at the start goes right out the window, think on the paper itself, take full advantage of eraser/ctrl-z and work in layers.
also, if you're like me you can still imagine with proprioception even if you can't imagine with vision. if you understand the forms you're working with, you can still imagine yourself running your hand or a pencil over it and translate it to the paper, even if you can't see what the line would look like before you draw it.

Hi anon, It's not bad however I would like to save you years of frustration and help you become a better artist.

>First ditch the digital (for now)
i know the appeal of digital is high but at this stage it will only hinder your development as artist. the reason for this is you need to build up dexterity and accuracy with a pencil. Digital as much as it has improved will never have the precision of a pencil. master the pencil and digital will come easy.

>second, when it comes to anatomy there are plenty of great methods, techniques and traditions to achieving an accurate and lively figure how you decide to balance that is your style. But i would suggest for now to pick one method and focus on it's accuratge application with lines, contour and construction, ignore shading for now.

the most solid advice i was given is never to take the pen off the paper when drawing a line, fits more important for you to develop a constant flow rather than worry about accuracy earlier on (i.e, even if a line is off course just focus on making it as straight as possible) never take your pen off if you want a line, that how chicken scratching happens

Will this board ever call anything a "gesture" drawing if it's not a direct photocopy of one of Vilppu's gestures?
If every single person who posts here gets told "that's not gesture" then maybe the problem is with the learning materials?

>> No.4477347

Yeah. It's a principle, not some separate from of drawing that should look as if Vilppu drew it. You don't make a "perspective" drawing - you use it for your drawings, same with gesture.

You're using softer shapes for your body, but outside of the face the hands look like an afterthought. The hand over here breasts look like they have arthritis and the fingers on the far side have four joints. The far side hands also has a very flat joint for between the fingers when it should be curved, because the base hand is both a curved box; has a curved edge, and your fingers are all different sizes. You'd benefit from some hand studies.

ok being that I'm not looking to go professional and I'm already in college It seems like a difficult choice. nma and schoolism is better suited to my time and way of wanting to learn, gnomon is way too intense and formal for me, a literal art school where most courses are on campus which is not what I'm looking for. cgma seems really good, especially for digital art. I might try NMA landscape courses and just try to transfer the methods over to digital, I have decent knowledge in photoshop, I can look of techniques if I become stuck too.

I don't understand how sketching works. How do good artists use like 3 lines for an eye and yet it looks appealing and correct? I can capture the mood but I lose the appeal. Or I can make it appealing but then I can't capture the expression. If I focus on getting one part right then I lose the proportion of the rest of it. Fucking hell I don't fucking get it.
