The problem is with this argument (and similar ones like it) is that we are talking in present terms, ask yourself if your average cartoon network animator can replicate the same kind of animation during its peak? Probably not. Your average 2d animation is now over simplified shapes; eerily similar to those modern abstract art pieces of taping bananas onto walls for 5 gorillion dollary-doos.

But one thing I'll give credit for gaijin piggus is that they recently developed automatic shading using AI on their netflix show, making it look 3d. (Its the cartoon that looks 3d CG and it has Santa in it)

>In 1977, Rankin/Bass produced an animated version of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. It was followed in 1980 by an animated version of The Return of the King
>Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc. (founded as Videocraft International, Ltd. and later known as Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment) was an American production company, known for its seasonal television specials, particularly its work in stop motion animation.
>Nearly all of the studio's traditional animation was outsourced to at least five Japanese animation companies: MOM Production, Toei Animation, TCJ (Television Corporation of Japan), Mushi Production and Topcraft.

So there's no hope for me making an anime after all

I agree with the sentiment this image is getting across, but whoever gathered these really didn't pick the best examples.
The entire top row looks like western social media front pagers (idk how better to explain-- it just doesn't look quite japanese to me)

on the middle row, I can only confidently say that the ibaraki (3rd) img looks like it isn't western. First two look like they're from deviantart.

Bottom row has the highest ratio of passing, with the exception being the last manga-style image. The second image also is pretty close but something about the faces on the background props gives it away.

I don't think any of these images are really bad though, just not very good examples of westerners passing off as actual japanese artists..

I'm the guy who made the image, and I didn't really want to spend hours going through each artists portfolio so instead I just gathered some random images from them. The point of that image wasn't to show that western artists are better than eastern artists at anime, obviously thats not true, I was just trying to show that it's possible to adapt a anime looking artstyle if you're not japanese. The thing is people whenever having these arguments act like its some kind of impossible feat for a western artist to have an anime artstyle, like climbing mount everest in a wheelchair while blindfolded. So I made the list to show its possible.

>I agree with the sentiment this image is getting across, but whoever gathered these really didn't pick the best examples.

Here's a better example from Toni Infante.
You should consider checking out some of the artists other images if you ever have the time, it's not really fair to judge
an artist just on one image they made.

>Can I have a quick rundown on how the "westerners can't draw anime" meme generated from?

Sometimes it's "drawing the nose as a small potato instead of a line", sometimes it's the over-pronounced lips and sometime it's just that the facial symbols are drawn/arranged in a way that screams "inauthentic". There's no solid thing you can actually put a finger on but somehow you just know there's something off from looking at it.

I am not saying westerners can't draw anime, it's just that there exists a lot of people who are either unable/can't/won't fully copy the style they want to emulate despite wanting to profit off it.

>> No.4480144

>>4472985
The issue with this is that virtually all of those examples are far too japanese in their subject matter. It's fine to draw in the japanese style that is anime but to actually draw japanese subject matters is pointless
The girl with the scroll in her mouth is japanese fashion, the girl with horns is japanese folklore, the girl with the big coat is japanese, half the charactrs in these are japanese.

These subject matters hold great meaning to the Japanese people, that's why they draw them, why they make anime inspired by them, but we are not Japanese, it means nothing to us, it is not our history, not our folklore or culture

The typical new years shrine episode of every anime is Japanese culture, it would be meaningless for a westerner to create such an episode in the west because we don't do it.

Find what's good in the west and draw that, currently all people in the west care to draw are stories that aren't theirs, find your own culture

>to actually draw japanese subject matters is pointless
>it means nothing to us
Cultural expressions frequently go extinct because they lose meaning to their respective peoples, they're not constant things even if you want them to be. They also morph because of intermingling between cultures, and a current world pop culture example of this is Dragon Ball, it's a parody of a Chinese folk tale made by a Japanese guy.

>These subject matters hold great meaning to the Japanese people
About as much meaning as dragons, elves, wizards' hats and knights' armor do to us, in other words not a lot. Non-Westerners constantly use "western" stuff either because it was imposed on them or they just adopted it, and nobody bats an eye at it. You're a prisoner of the dominant culture.
