IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

analyze the pose, what is she doing? how hard is she leaning backwards to reach the wall? where is her center of gravity? how far from the wall are her shoulders, hips and each feet? what pelvis angle can you infer from illiac crest's position?
those should give you more insights on the pose to make it more three dimensional
also consuming a lot of draw porn trains you to overestimate hip and thigh volume
also if you plan on doing naked studies, unless you're particularly interested in how high heels work, I'd suggest bare footed images instead

You need to learn how to properly line up eyes, noses, and mouths first by using guidelines. I suggest that you use a grid as a beginner. A grid is when you break down a portrait into squares and do the same on your paper and follow along with each square. Look up portrait grids on YouTube, Alyssa monks uses this method often with her photorealistic drawings.

And I think Gi would be happy that you are making art.

When you make a study, don’t just go though the motions and draw. Make these look good! I don’t know why instructors don’t harp on this more. Just because it is a form that’s not human doesn’t mean you just draw and throw away. Use the opportunity to work on concept and design. Don’t crowd the page with figures, make these figures dynamic in space. Use the opportunity to place figures on a realistic plane with a horizon line and perspective with the figures.

You waste so much time going through the motions. Make it fun!

Why is the anatomy so off? Why do the figures look like plastic? Why is your background so plain and poorly constructed? Why didn’t you spend more time making a more engaging composition? Why is your use of colors make everything look muddled?

Your underdrawing is weak and poorly referenced, by doing so your final painting looks uninspired and weak. Even if you went into this and spent another 20 hours working you have made an incredibly lifeless and boring composition. You really should go back to life drawing, color theory, and drawing landscapes and buildings from life. Do that for like 2 months then come back to this and redraw it with your new skills. Study from life!!!

I like my sketch of the soldier though.
The background was a necessity and has no construction.

Can the soldier posing like that make for an interesting illustration or was I doomed from the start?

>> No.4463107

>>4463085
That’s not how you use a reference. It’s there to draw from, not trace and stick a badly drawn anime head on top of it. You have got to learn how to manipulate figures in space and alternate how that figure positions itself. You should have just tried to draw the photo completely as a study instead of making it look like an original drawing to build on your ability to visualize the figure.

You guys have to start doing life drawing, still life’s, figure drawing, landscape studies, grid drawings, perspective. You can’t just jump into drawing without some base knowledge to work from. A beginner should always start in reality and understand how things work in space before you start creating alterations and focusing on style. I would even argue that loomis isn’t beneficial until you have a base understanding of form. I see so many badly drawn loomis studies it hurts. Learn the rules, they are everywhere.

>> No.4463129

>>4463106
That’s your problem. You need to work out what exactly you want to draw first before you start your final draft.

You need to view successful drawing as making a successful research paper. First you create an outline for what you want to do. In drawing this is making a thumbnail and gathering reference material for your work. A thumbnail is working though the problems of what it is you wish to make. Then you make the rough draft. Artists call this the tight rough. Tighten up the drawing so that there aren’t any surprises when you begin painting. Then when you paint you need to have a proper distinction between your warm colors and cool colors. Just placing colors together without any thought will make paintings look like a muddled mess. Remember when you have too many complementary colors together you cancel them out and lose the luminous nature of those colors.

So ditch this and start with a thumbnail and reference photos and DECIDE what to draw. Make a tightrough that is a very well done drawing. Start with that, and repost your tight rough. Then once you’ve posted it and gotten the ok, figure out what warm and cool colors you will be using, and post color studies. Do several color studies! Repost and we will take a look.

What does /ic/ think of Ethan Becker and his videos where he talks about tracing over artists you like to see what they are doing, tracing over photos to get the form and how everything works in your head, faster.
He seems to make some really good points about that, and also to basically never draw from imagination and always have photo refs, video refs, and other artist's work refs.
Thoughts???

Thanks, my figures are the only things sort of good since I autisticly grinded them pretty much exclusively, the other things I post are definitely more beg-ish.

>I feel like the left arm is bigger than the right arm
I think you're right in that the arm is too big, I think what happened was that I did a gesture pass before-hand and didn't correct for the early draft later in the drawing. I can Post the ref in a sec.

>you should post a work you did before to see if you improved or not.
Part of the problem is that I fell into a mindless grind and never really pushed for finished figure drawings and comparing them to gestures doesn't really make much sense.
But Pic related is something I did a year ago.

Break it down into steps. What I do is give myself assignments. Like do five landscapes painted from life, do 5 nude figure studies, do five original environments and perspective studies, do five concept art character studies, and assign that for the week. As you make more work, you’ll make progress.

Your hand is pretty decent at drawing, but you aren’t investing enough time and attention to your sketches. The bird is rendered well, it would look even better with a rendered background. Add tones to those figure studies, that will make them pop. You’re on the right track, just add a drawing schedule, assignments, and increase the level of depth and time you put into your sketches and studies, then start making complete work.

Of course. Just saying practice is like asking someone how to get better at fighting and them saying “just fight”.

Ok. Here is what you can do to improve construction. First, do simple still life’s of apples, oranges, cylinder shaped objects, any form that is geometric in nature and spend at the bare minimum 3 hrs on each study. Do five of these. Then, move on to landscape studies. Since the coronavirus is going on, draw from images. Spend at least 3 hrs on each landscape. Finally, grab either anatomy for the artist, charles bargue book of lithographs for drawing, or find art models companion disks on amazon and print a bunch of copies of models. Use a grid like the one shown and copy the models. Start with black and white with the medium of your choice. Do all of these and post the best ones on here. Get critiqued, listen to what seems like it will help you, rinse and repeat the process with different models and still life’s, and move on to color. At a minimum you should spend two months doing this until it becomes very easy. Do this regularly, and I guarantee that you will show massive progress. Note, don’t just breeze though these exercises. Give every drawing your full undivided attention and use it to learn about construction.

Real thank you for your critique, color theory is my weakest hability and most of my color choices are by pure thought, Other of my biggest mistakes is that a lot of times I start a drawing in the detailing stage, which makes me forget about perspective, anatomy and color theory, kinda like making a ink drawing without a sketch but more like painting a face without sketch and starting with an ear.

Total beginner here (yes, I've read the sticky), wanted a few pointers since I've basically never drawn outside of doodling during class as a kid.
I know I need to start out focusing on fundamentals like basic line work, but once I get the hang of that I either want to do just basic anime style stuff or I want to work my way up to fantasy/Lovecraftian eldritch horror style art like pic related.
That being said, I have no fucking clue how I would even begin to work towards getting to this level. Also, right now I just have paper and a mechanical pencil to work with, so I'm assuming I'll need to at least get better pencils or something down the line, but if I start getting good enough and am enjoying drawing I might consider investing in a drawing tablet.

Welcome to hell Anon, to the place of eternal torture that you will never escape from.

Jokes aside, if you are truly new focusing on fundamentals is the best way to go. The 3 basic subjects that are mostly theoretic that I would suggest are
- Perspective
- Composition
- Light fundamentals
Those should be enough to start you off, color is another big topic but that can be done later.

Here are some Youtube videos you can get started on

Sycra's foundation of Light and Shadow series
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q-LZVFZuGE&list=PLV2X3tgajVlHkH3FHxm3rLZWqScFTRhtv
This series explains light in the most basic way I can think of

Understanding composition from Blender Guru
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8i7OKbWmRM

Composition in Art by Virtual instructor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAPXep8wPts

10 minutes to perspective by Marco Bucci
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmR_Q1mtS7I

Again these are not really fun stuff, these boring theory but these are essential topics to understanding drawing in the long run. These should be enough to get you started without even needing to pick up a pencil and drawing anything.

I'm having incredible difficulty with construction, and I've not really improved much at all over the past year. I can only draw simple poses, as I have no idea how to express the forms with proportion. I know the ratios but I just can't put it on paper. I'm capable of shitting out an awful head or torso front facing or side on, but from the back or angled I can't manipulate shapes in 3D space. I've tried drawabox and stuff like that but I simply cannot visualise it properly enough to translate it onto paper. I'm at my fucking wits end here. Perhaps learning from home is a really bad thing and I need classes instead.

TLDR I simply can't construct. I know how to loomis head in my head but it always comes out wrong or wonky or whatever.

do Erik Olson perspective course, draw with him thinking why it's drawn like that, not just copying, then draw your own version of the the exercise three times (even free hand is fine assuming your lines are ok). A lot of the basics are lacking with you bro. There are a couple of books you need to pick up. How to draw: drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination, anatomy for artists, figure drawing for all its worth, successful illustration, making comics, art models: practical posing for the working artist. Do all the exercises and draw everything in those books for a while, then come back to this. The reason why it’s taking so long is that you don’t understand how to draw what your drawing and you are struggling making up stuff. Get solid basics in drawing and design, then attempt to make this.

>> No.4465144

>>4464730
Do a couple gestures then render these models so you can learn anatomy. It’s boring, it’s annoying, it’s tedious, but if you do it enough everything about your art will be better.

>> No.4465149

>>4464666
Good. Now you need to commit to them. Use an old fashioned grid to understand the anatomy of the face so that they don’t look wonky. Look up grids for portraits and make one to learn proportions. Spend a bit of time on each one, at least 3 hours and make it look as close to the real thing as possible.

>> No.4465170

>>4465045
You have a lot of beginner traits. You are unsure of your pencil lines so they look scratchy, your proportions are off, and you haven’t rendered these at all. If you are looking at your own hands and feet, use a mirror. Look for stock images of hands and feet they are everywhere. Commit some actual time to drawing these studies instead of mindlessly cranking them out and you will make progress. Do 5 hand studies from reference, 5 feet studies from reference, spend 1-3 hours on each one, post your two best, and get critiqued.

>> No.4465180

>>4464891
Then you must draw from life, and use what the old masters discovered on how to do better construction. You haven’t actually done enough research to find ways of improving construction. It’s alll our there: use grids, use a process of drawing with geometric shapes first to break down form and draw on top, do several still life’s to see how form works, do reverse contour drawings to feel the shapes in space, and so on.

Dude I guarantee if you pick up one book on anatomy and work through it a little bit you’ll make progress. Don’t say I can’t until you have actually looked for every method out there to make good art and have committed to it for some time.

a good rule i read somewhere is make the lightest value be the 40-50%, very bright lights like in metals you can go lighter ofc
also some value studies using just 3 or 4 tones mioght also help you get in the groove, even if using color always be thinking of those 3-4 base values, i dont enjoy Sinix, but search his youtube hes pretty good with painting and rendering skin

And once again we see what a lie "study your fundies" is when the most shilled books can't even agree on what the fucking fundies are.

oh anon if only you'd watched his videos instead of concluding too much from my offhand quip

he deals with anatomy a lot, but says that the order of importance for a good figure is:

1) the gesture
2) the form and proportion
3) only then the anatomy

you can hyper-render your magic abs all you like, it won't make the pose read

he treats anatomy as salad dressing over gesture, essential form, proportion much like how vilppu and steve huston do

there's no disagreement here

anatomy just isn't the most essential skill you need

I'm not saying he has to get hyper detailed with the anatomy.
As far as I could tell his treatment of the form of the arm was incomplete. Earlier in the book he breaks down the muscles of the neck and torso, traps, obliques, etc, and gives you a simple shape to use for each, and it's pretty thorough and helpful. By the time he got to the arm he said fuck it and did not even go over basic shapes corresponding to his three simplified muscle groups. This is what I remember from reading the book fairly recently. Correct me if I'm wrong.

honestly idr what the book said any more lol but in the videos he does go over the muscles of the arm in some detail

if he totally overlooks them in the book, then it's his mistake definitely
but the book only served as a companion piece for his videos to me

none of the bigshots alive today know how to write a good art book

i personally prefer wooded and woodless pencils just because they're harder to snap and i don't like to be too controlled and restrained when i draw

pencils let you pick how wide you want your stroke, mechanicals give you a consistent stroke width and eliminate the need for sharpening

go with what personally suits you; i've seen good artists do good work with either or both

Lol you are still here whining about that... The fundamentals are just the things that are in every work of art. Your problem is you want someone to hold your hand and tell you exactly how to practice and what to practice. But if someone does that, then you complain that their advice conflicts with someone else’s.

Trying to learn basic proportions. I think I made her a bit too wide. Are there any resources for drawing figures that aren’t I heads tall? I don’t wanna draw models, I wanna draw ‘normal’ people.
