Made a tiny 6x8 cm oil study to work out the colours for a 60x80cm canvas version of this Hopper.
I have a canvas with a slightly damaged edge that I had a free replacement for, so I'm going to paint it for myself.

Depends what you're doing with it - even the cheapest white spirit will thin oil paint well enough and allow you to apply thin, runny layers, but nothing works quite like pine turpentine. The only way you will know if it's a good substitue for your way of handling paint is by giving it a go.

Shame you couldn't find an MSDS; marketing of "non-harmful" is worthless without it. Zest-It, Gamsol, and other thinners are all marketed as "safe" or "non-harmful", but they'll still kill you if you drink them, and you can't just pour them down the drain. Try this Tintoretto stuff if you want, but it seems prohibitively expensive to me. If what you want is a *safer* and *less smelly" alternative to turpentine then Gamsol is probably your best bet, although bear in mind it is still lethal and it still has a smell. If you absolutely insist on painting with oil paint in a 100% non-toxic way, you will probably have to look into water-miscible oil paints.

It really depends on your end goal, and style.

Acrylics are more forginving, but can be expensive to buy all the colors you need plus mediums and brushes

You can buy a good cheap watercolour pack for 18€ so thats a good option

Another option is for you to buy a guache set, with that youll learn how to lroperly mix colors and can have either a watercolor feel or an acrylics, depending on how much water you add

I think this type of brushwork only really works on foliage and the like, using it for sand and giving texture to the rock doesnt really work, makes it look rather unpleasing man.

I think using a darker background and then this technique with brighter colours is the way to make it standout,

20x16 I think, done with oil pastels. Everything left up to randomization. Whole piece is built on rules and made with dice rolls to determine color choice and length of time spent on that color (min 1, max 6min). Solid shapes are only somewhat random. Most freely composed part of project.

I know it’s not figure work but figured it was traditional enough.

I’d say get some decent paper at least. Just go to a local art store and grab a cheap sketchbook. Don’t get anything too big or you might overwhelm yourself and feel like you can’t fill the whole page. I’d say start fill the book with figure drawings.

As for Mark-making materials, I’d say you could probably use whatever you want. If you want to start with graphite a normal 2B pencil isn’t that bad. If you got some ball point pens lying around those are fun to work with. Experiment with what you have. If you like it then move up and on to more materials.
But purchase a sketchbook. Million times better that just having printer paper.

Buy darren rousar's book on sight-size. follow it exactly for 3-5 drawings. Instead of a cast you can use matte spraypaint on a cheap lawn gnome. Take your time, get things exactly right. >> No.4470727

>>4470682
Yeah I've done that.

Synthetic brushes don't hold water, horsehair and other cheaper natural brushes don't keep point. Cheap chalk pan colors only give faded colors. Worst is the paper. Even on 100% pulp paper you can do some layering, but wet on wet techniques are impossible. I've glued some pieces to firm surfaces but it's really hard to get it off afterwards and even then the paper still buckles.

It's just a really expensive medium inherently. I've done layering for some while but I'm really starting to question on what is the point of doing watercolor if you can't do wet-on-wet washes which is the most fun part of it?

Your values are in better shape than your hues. Do you have a thing against actual color?

Try this: take your tube of black, and give it to someone with firm instructions not to give it back to you for a year. Now, try and mix color without it, and look for the actual hues in nature. Start looking for and painting cool and warm colors, to establish your values. Your painting, aside from the sky, is brown and black. It's unappealing, and not particularly pleasant to look at. The little color you've actually used is drowned in all of the black. You have no reflected blue in the distance, and no atmosphere.

Thank you for the suggestions. I did this today, no black at all on the canvas. Used masking tape for the ocean horizon which I’ve never tried before. I think the pink in the clouds is a little messed up and the foreground I wish had darker contrast.

I think the foreground could almost use some brighter and more saturated colors, just enough to make it pop out more? I'm guessing the pink might look messed up because you have it in spots as opposed to a more uniform look across the clouds similar to pic related.

Regardless, I love it. The texture and colors in general are super relaxing.
