What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I have no doubt there are people out there who would commission fetish art from you, but you should definitely work on your understanding of the body and how it moves a bit more.
The way the girl on the left's left arm comes across her chest is very broken.
You can fix this either by rotating the mass around her ribcage to face the left more or moving her left arm into another position.

Glad I was able to help, honestly I'm probably just as much of a beginner as the rest of you maybe a month or two ahead in terms of time spent learning(Corona chan has really upped the productivity though), I just wanted to use the opportunity to practice my own knowledge of construction(after all they say the best way to learn stuff is to attempt to teach it to someone else) so my redlines probably aren't the best.

I've been grinding with loomis' figure drawing book this year, there's a reason people recommend it, it's super good.
Doing the first couple of draw-a-box challenges also helped me to just grind out boxes and get a better grip on perspective.
Also check out the book "perspective made easy" it's pretty integral to understanding everything if you're a beginner.
I've just been alternating between the loomis book and everything else I've mentioned.
Also post in the /beg/ threads

lol, I didn't realize it was that obvious
My taste when it comes to mecha designs I appreciate is very broad, but I don't think I've ever drawn explicitly female robots.
There are designs like the gundam exia which have a bit of a feminine quality to them that I've sketched before, but nothing like the way female mecha are depicted in shows like the braves or DitF.
But it's definitely something I'll try my hand at soon.

>lol, I didn't realize it was that obvious
Don't worry, it's not too obvious. I just spent most of my time with mecha and robot related franchises. Primarily Medarot.
>There are designs like the gundam exia which have a bit of a feminine quality
You think so? I don't really see it with Exia, but something like Woundwort hits more in that direction, in my opinion. Mobile Doll May MS-Mode (pic related) is a given, but still nice to see nonetheless (just like Nobel Gundam).
>but nothing like the way female mecha are depicted in shows like the braves or DitF
The mechgirls were the only reason why I checked out DitF at all. It was worth it (especially the artbook and manga, in that regard).
>But it's definitely something I'll try my hand at soon.
I'm very glad to hear that!

>> No.4450043

>>4450026
>I don't really see it with Exia
It's very subtle, but in the PG, RG and MB versions of the design ebikawa messed around with the proportions of the thighs, hands, feet, and torso giving it a more feminine look.
The original animation design was always pretty petite and slender, but it never felt like it leaned towards one gender or another.
More modern iterations however do lean towards the feminine side a bit imo.

Itkuto Yamashita, Kanetake Ebikawa, Shoji Kawamori are probably my holy trinity of mecha artists.
Syd Mead is a more general futuristic sci-fi concept artist, but his concept design work is legendary and a lot can be gleaned from it.
Takayuki Yanase did designs for XCX, as well as a ton of gundam stuff alongside ebikawa
Mamoru Nagano has very interesting ideas when it comes to shape design and silhouettes

I actually don't follow many dedicated mecha artists on twitter, I think some of the above ones have twitters, but I haven't looked in a while.

you should try to think in 3D and about the underlying anatomy as much as possible, a lot of the lines here feel loose and with little thought put into them.
A lot of questions immediately pop out, such as:

- what is the obi wrapping around? if we drew a line through showing the backside of the obi, it should be wrapping around the waist like a cylinder. is it?
- where are her shoulders? we should be able to see their volume through her sleeve, and on how the frills are resting on them
- what volume do the frills have? how are they moving in 3d space? where are they beginning and where are they ending?

don't get lazy. continue to ask yourself these questions as you decide where and how you want to place your lines.

Don't beat yourself up too much over what other people say. I know it's hard when something you do gets piled on. Stay true to yourself, keep the course and draw what you like while keeping a critical eye on your own drawings and how you can excel at what you love to do. It's a sentiment I wish more people would take to heart.

The VERY obvious avoidance of drawing hands drags this down somewhat. It looks boring, despite the good rendering.
Having her express some personality with her body language would've elevated the redesign.
