Why do I have to constantly weigh one side of the page down to stop it from closing? I can never draw to the end of one page because its always folded. I don't even draw on one side of the sketchbook because every time i move my hand the thing closes Why not just use a spiral bound sketchbook? What the fucks the point?

you're almost there, but you're still falling for the bound paper meme

A clipboard is just as impractical.
You still cant draw at the top of page because its being held by the metal clip, and you have to store individual sheets of paper as opposed to having them all binded together

You can make them if you put in the effort. Take a moleskine and undo its binding. Bookbinding can be done in reverse to get sheets and covers.

That being said. I'm not a clipboard fan. I tried it but it wasn't for me. I resort to taking a slab of paper (usually printer or photo, 100-300 sheets) and binding them myself. The biig spirals wear away since they're plastic (my current 300 sheet book is starting to break the spirals and I'm around 40% of the way through it) but they can be easily replaced. My productivity has skyrocketed since changing over to spirals, but they're much uglier than hardcovers or even softcovers.

They look nicer than spiral-bound notebooks (personal taste), no spirals to get in your hand’s way when drawing in portrait orientation, can make bigger pieces spanning two pages, the sheets shift around less meaning fewer smudges on your older sketches.

as a professional bookbinder I imagine that you have never used a handmade sketchbook.
a handmade book can open 180° and 100% flat, so it will not close, and you have all the paper surface and doubled sheets to draw. you can choose the paper you like the most and its more durable, lasting for at least a century, and of course its aesthetic is much more pleasant.
I think based in what you said that coptic binding (the image one) or sewn boards binding are the best for you. (I like classical the most for aesthetical reasons but not the best choice for an artist)

The problem with some spiral bound is that the pages float when closed smudging the works within requiring a binder clip to keep the pages still.

This is the reason for me, i normally bind my own sketchbooks, so i can have A3 or A4 pages whenever i want since i don't have a spiral in the middle of it

you're not using a good one. Good non-spirals can flat out like it's a whole page no problem. I prefer it cause spirals get in the way, ruin the pages, and scratch your scanner.

I've always been interested in binding a sketchbook but I've used a needle and thread exactly once in my life in home economics so I imagine I'd be shit at it.

It's pretty easy honestly, you just have to get the right string and wax it. There's a lot of tutorials on the internet, search for "copic binding"

You shouldn't be drawing to the edge of the page in the first place, the clip is irrelevant to anything. It takes up about as much paper that you lose to ring binding, anyway.
I generally don't do more than sketch or doodle in sketchbooks, the surface is too soft from the paper below it. I use unprimed wood panels on stretchers from Blick in different size as drawing board, and tape them down (got a bunch on sale). I have a board with clip from college, that I use for larger pieces of paper from time to time as well, if I have a watercolor taped to one of the Blick panels.
Use what you like. The A vs B fights on this board over materials is a waste of time.
