I started drawing in Jan and was super into it, practiced a few hours a day. Made quick progress and made a few things I'm happy with.

I was going to school and working full time. For the first 2 months everything was great. On the 3rd month shit started piling up and the contract and my job was ending so shit was stressful and I had to put drawing on the back burner since all my time was spent on papers and work.
After that finished I've totally lost momentum.

Any tips on how to get back into the groove?

So I decided that I want to start drawing again, but this time I want to invest real time into it. I stopped because I would get stuck in one thing and just move on to the next drawing without finishing the one before.
I want to go back to those unfinished drawings and give them new life, finish them for once. Pic related is the one I chose to start with, I believe I didn't continue this one because I had no idea how to draw the neck, any tips or advice on the drawing or how to discipline myself into finishing what I start?

I’m a sperg, and over the last few years I’ve tried to get good at drawing a couple of times, only to get so overwhelmed and frustrated I give up and try again a few months later, having forgotten all I had learnt from those first few exercises of Proko, Hampton, and and random manga tutorials. When I learn a piece of music it’s a pretty linear process that’s easy to process and I don’t have this problem, but learning to draw... I just hate it! Despite the wonderful How to Draw: An /ic/ Guide I still feel lost.
I’m not TERRIBLE at just copying stuff (pic related), but any invention just makes me RAGE. I just want to first A, then B, and then C because of my fucking autism. If I ‘just do it’ my drawing degenerates into smudgy mess full of hard and angry lines.

So pls give me advice. Sorry if my question has been asked a million times already on this board. I don’t browse here often. I just really really really want to draw beautiful artistic porn like that of jeffr ),,:

Why didn't you draw it carefully the first time? If you're just gonna rush through your art and then shit it out for critique you're not just wasting your own time, you're wasting other people's time too.

This is better, but your values when shading are way lighter than what you're modeling. It makes it looker flatter than it should. Take your time, but also don't be afraid to make a commitment when drawing, whether that's time, effort, or doing something scary like using darker values.

I suggest you try to make look the forehead rounder, it is a quite rounded surface even if it often glossed over due to stylization and thick eyebrow lines. You could also add a slight hint of a highlight at the backside of the body to make it look more of a solid object. I wold also suggest you make the white part of the eyes in shadow darker than the one in light unless you are doing pure monochrome. The eyes do obey the light and shadow laws as well and are almost never full whit unless they are lowing.

Did this help?

Yes, it can help, especially with volume and measuring (if you take life sculpture). One thing that helps, if you're any good at sculpture, is you can forever use clay to make forms to help figure out problems. But mostly, it really builds up your 3D sense, because if you learn to sculpt correctly, you get in the habit of constantly looking at whatever you're doing from all angles.

it depends mostly on the geography of the face to know where are the bumps and hols and what is the overall shape compared to the light. On color, usually you can just go from l light to dark an getting more saturated in the midtones and less and less as you approach the extremes. So highlights and shadows could be less saturated. You can also try to move the color from red to blue at the darker places that can produce a nice effect if you know how to do it. But a lot depends on the color of the ambient light as well. Remember that colors do not exist in a vacuum, they exist compared to each other.

speaking openly, if you are a technically terrible 'artist' but you are genuinely content with your own work, does it really matter if you improve at a technical level ?
I suppose you could argue your limiting your own ability to create, but then again the idea of forcibly drawing something you don't want to multiple times also seems counterproductive to your own satisfaction.

It depends what you want out of art. If you want to express your ideas with the highest level of visual fidelity possible then yeah you need to improve your technical skills.

However if you dont care about visual fidelity then dont worry about it. a lot of comic artists or "illustrators" are technically shit but they have just enough skill to express their ideas then their ideas are interesting enough that people care.

I've come to realize drawing is 100 times easier, more fun and more relaxing if you just detach yourself from the end result and let yourself draw. Instead of analyzing and redrawing the same line for an hour, it's a lot better to just use that energy on another drawing and try to make that one better than your last. I think I've been so paralyzed by the idea of "drawing wrong" and developing bad habits that it stopped me from drawing at all. But that's a ridiculous idea (aside from physically damaging drawing habits of course)

Symbol drawing is not inherently bad. Cartoons are based on symbols. All representational art lies somewhere on a spectrum between more symbolic and more photorealistic, it's not either/or and most art does not aim for full photorealism.
If someone criticizes you for symbol drawing, they basically either mean "your art looks bad" or "you didn't make your drawing as realistic as you wanted it to be". If your drawing is at the appropriate level of realism but it still looks bad, then you need to acquire better symbols. If you're trying to render something more realistic but you're not able to, then you need to practice your rendering.

the face has an extremely sharp edge there, a female face is always rounder unless you can soften it up but adding a longer gradient.

In general I would say the biggest thing that hinders you is that most parts of the face are just too big: eyes, nose, lips, eyebrows especially all too big compared to the head.

Because of this the face gets very crowded and you have little space to move them around, I would suggest you experiment and try and make these smaller, that will allow you to move them around and create more distinct faces.

Maybe if you add some detail (with shades and so on) to the elbow area like cloth blending there. I doubt he has the arm fully straight as it looks from that Point of view. You can also just change the position of the arm to make it easier. "Higher" elbow looks more "aggresive", keep that in mind.

another form/value thing. i find myself constantly forgetting that i need to visualise the light source as actually 3d, pointing towards the object, instead of just being (in this case) in the bottom right corner of my canvas, flat

also why does the middle concave part look moreso two-toned than monotone?

Where is the light coming from? How far away is the light source? How far away are the loose strands of hair from the face?

>>4445372
Idk If I’m going to be able to describe it accurately, but I was trying to make the light come from in front and from the right, around from like 3 to 4 o’clock, and the hair come off a bit from her face in the front if that makes sense? Light source ideally kinda close and hard, like sunbeam through the window or a lamp.

I think I see now I have an extra shadow in there on the right

>> No.4445386

>>4445380
Yeah I think that’s closer to what I was trying to get at, I kinda have trouble visualizing the planes of the face esp w/ harder shadows. Thanks!

I see, I’ll try that again, and stop the chickenscratching

So anyways, sometime before reading the reply to my post I drew this, after having drawn along with https://youtu.be/aOtVUHgJqQk
Someone pls critique. This is the first time I drew a body from imagination which doesn’t look too bad (to me at least), though for the face I did use a model.
Also, should I read Hampton or can I continue watching YouTube videos? Can I skip Fun with a Pencil? Study more gesture or anatomy? I’m aware there might not be a clear answer to these questions...

Forcing myself to try new things in my drawings and draw from different angles instead of my usual "From the side/front facing" shtick, now that I have the extra time from the current situation.

I just can't get in the mindset of reading a book to learn. I get bored really easy. I don't mind drawing, and I'm always trying to improve little by little by working with irl references and trying to copy what I see.

Learn to properly draw stickmen first. Then move onto 3d cylinder-box people. Then you will understand what you did wrong here.

Here's the thing: the shadows are being cast as if the hair is closer to the light source than the face. The shadows should be "clinging" to the hair, but it looks almost as if the shadows are being projected onto the body from the light source.

>> No.4445706

>>4445675
Kind of, don't forget the coccyx too. Fair enough, tracing might help you get a better idea of the shapes, but it is just contour drawing. The pelvis exercise does put quite a bit of emphasis on the construction. In your earlier drawings, it looked like you were drawing the bucket then just disregarding it and not correctly measuring for the landmarks.

try sketching with a brush that has no pressure sensitivity so you can focus on the drawing process and not the line work.
