That's not really how it works. A credit card alone will not build a credit score - and more important an overall profile that would qualify someone for a mortgage. They look at everything - your income, your debt, your credit history, your taxes, etc. With a big enough downpayment they'll overlook some things, but just a credit card isn't much, especially if you're low income and have a lot of debt, like a student loan.
A credit card is a tool. I pay mine off every month, and have good credit, because my debt/income ratio is solid, and I pay my bills on time.
