**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

You really have to decide for yourself. We all have our own weaknesses and goals. Why not aim for 30-60 minutes of each one, every day? Time goes by quickly, for good and bad. Just do an arbitrary routine for a month to build a habit and post your work here for review. Once the month is up you can ask yourself the question again and answer it based on the experience and feedback from this place.

I have heard that and was thinking about it when trying to size the hands right, but anime heads are generally bigger than real heads though. Comparing the open hand/face ratio to random images off danbooru it doesn't seem that off (also the character being a fivehead makes the face area feel larger). I did keep feeling like the left hand was too small but then it's also curled up and the perspective should be making it look shorter.
I still think the width is more the issue than the height, I maybe should have made the eyes smaller and narrowed the face. Or maybe I should just start drawing megucas and hidamaris since I always seem to drift towards wideface even back to when I started out copying.

Thank you but I'm just grinding figures like that because I'm very dissatisfied with my work from imagination.
The advice I can give you is never copy the reference, analyze it and make your own interpretation and choices.
For example in the region behind the knee, the original artist interpreted the hamstring tendons in a way, while I tried to make my own interpretation based on a Vilppu video.

original. The book is great. At first, when I was totally ignorant about art I always thought the anime art is inferior to Kurehito Misaki's art. But now looking at Takase's design, he did a great job making simple yet attractive design. As expected from a pro.

Two chicks with vastly differing physics, the smaller one being cheeky and haughty the bigger one with the better feminine figure meek and a tad bit insecure about her physic and how she was always getting dirty looks from males of all ages since she was young.

I would call that lazy line, when you don't really care about line quality as long as it still does its job as a line to define shape and forms. You can clearly see, if you check line by line, that the artist didn't put 30 lines in the same spot in most areas of the image, if at all, so it's definitely not chicken scratch.

You can draw the anime girl (dummy) in all kinds of situations, with all kinds of backgrounds and different types of lighting. I'm drawing these all from imagination, in under 30 seconds, if even. Shouldn't it be no shit they're not a perfect anime panel. When I've only got a couple months in practice.

I think your oekaki mindset is good and in the right track, and I actually agree a lot of artists here have a bad mindset when it comes to drawing leading to some really stiff and soulless results. But the problem is that you're just drawing too much of the same stuff.

You need to start drawing something different. A different pose, actually drawing the hand, some clothes, whatever. You can still keep the constructive/imagination mindset, but just try drawing something new. And possibly spend a little but more time in your drawings.

Look up jusjusojus if you want some inspo for this style. The drawpari server also has a lot of nice artists with this mindset.

I'll repost this:

"Fundamentals before anime" is a kind of sequential thinking that creates artists who simply can't draw anime. You can use anime to study your fundamentals. They aren't mutually exclusive. You can also study realism and anime simultaneously.

Pic related is from the foreword of that popular アニメ私塾 book by a guy in the Japanese anime industry. See the triangle?
>上手い絵の模写: 上手い人の絵の記号(絵のパターン)を手に入れる
>Copying good drawings: acquiring the symbols of skilled people's drawings (the patterns of the drawings)
>実物の線画化:実物を理解することで、上手い人の絵が理解できる
>Real life drawing: by understanding real life, we can understand skilled people's drawings
>創作活動全般: 落書きや作品制作
>General original creation: sketching, complete OC works etc

Quote from the foreword:
>こうして、学生時代は「自主制作アニメを作る」「上手い絵の模写」「実物の線画化」のトライアングルを繰り返すことで劇的に上達していき、絵を描き始めてからわずか3年でスタジオジブリの入社試験に合格することができました。
>In this way, I made extreme progress during my school years by repeating a triangle of doing my own original anime drawings, copies of good drawings, and life drawings, and only 3 years after picking up drawing I was able to pass Studio Ghibli's employment test.

He was 19 when he started drawing.

Pic related also shows drawings from before he started practising deliberate copying as well as his original anime drawings from ~2 years after that.

Here's a link to a blog post with where he raves about the efficacy of copying

This board (and the rest of the internet) is infested with retards who don't realize that copying is LITERALLY how the vast majority of japanese anime artists learn how to draw.
All because of that deep-ingrained fear of "plagiarism" that's been so common in art communities, with retarded artists whining about how 2 characters sharing the same pose is literally "stealing" their artwork.

Art itself is derivative. Almost every art is derivative of what came before it.
Copying the art you like is a natural part of learning how to draw.

Does anyone else also learn from redlining/tracing pro's artist? I feel like it might help me understand how they draw with this method. Although perhaps I shouldn't do this too often and compose my own pose/drawing with the knowledge I acquired.

a better way is to redline original to find good construction lines, and then use that marked up version as your reference.
breaks the mental work up into more managable steps.

I'm beg as fuck and still grinding FWAP because I tried copying some animu first things first and couldn't even grasp the basic shapes of the head, my brain literally couldn't comprehend it, so I through studying some basics first and then copying once I understand how a head is formed would make more sense, would it?

Stealing is literally no gains since you're just tracing.
With copying you're internalizing the shapes and forms.

yes. you need to start with that simpler stuff because your hand-brain-eye coordination starts at zero.
you should also try some block-in style copying to help get a feel for the shapes. pic related is from the end of fwap, but there's more detailed explanations elsewhere.

Well I can tell you, if you keep drawing the same frontal pose over and over, you won't make progress where you want to.

You want to make girls out of basic shapes for optimal gains. All fundies will help with copying art styles.
