I don't get how to lineart. Every tutorial I find is basically "just do this lol" and they do a really pretty stroke while mine keeps looking like shit.

-Are you really supposed to do these with one stroke? I can't seem to be able to do this.
-How am I supposed to do line weight? Am I supposed to do a stroke and then fine tune my strokes by erasing it a bit?
-Is this harder or impossible to do with smaller tablets?

I just don't get it.

you're supposed to use construction. Make a rough under drawing and figure out your proportions and stuff, and make your lineart on a new layer on top of that. Line weight comes from pen pressure, just google line weight drills.

It's just practice.
You have to do one fast fluid motion. That's all it is. Making that fast motion go where you want it to is just practice.
>How am I supposed to do line weight
With pressure.
There's nothing wrong with going over parts of a line multiple times. If you're careful then it can still look clean.

Oh, so shading looks better when done in reds and oranges rather than grays. Good to know.

I don't understand hair at all and need to practice it further. I don't draw from the shoulder very often, and that's the only way to get nice flowing lines for hair, so I'll need to fix that habit first. First of all they're very cute. Very appealing. But this is a trap I see a lot of people fall into, as sobering else said on Instagram. That guy or girl, Ilya that people meme about, his girls are extremely cute but if you look through his gallery 99.9 percent of everything they draw is a cute girl, shoulders up, either no emotional expression or maybe a very subtle smile. And that's a lot of fun to draw and looks good but I think it's unsatisfying because it's not telling a story. You know... A good piece of art should be able to tell you something going on and how she feels about it. That girl quinni who died recently drew a lot of cute girls but she also drew them expressing something. Sure would draw these abstract metaphors. It meant something. She was trying to communicate a message to the viewer. A cute girl is just... Coom. It's just Coom and maybe a little narcissism.

I would say start with gesture, if you wish to draw manga-like things then that should be imperative. Manga and comics are all about about conveying a story. A story usually includes not only a wide range of physical movement like running, jumping, fighting or whatever but also a wide range of emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, guilty, helplessness and so on. You need to be able to know, at least on a basic level, how one's body can convey those emotions.

If you are unsure what I mean look at theater stage performance and you will see how much the actors move around to convey their emotions towards the crowd. This is needed because unlike TV in a theater one does not have a camera close up on their face do they must use their whole body to display the role they are playing. Furthermore those are all staged an choreographed by a director so the actors are also arranged in a way to help further the effect even more.

Decent start. I'd say this is a bit more fleshed out than what I would consider a gesture. I would suggest to pay a bit more attention to the relationship between the head and the main supporting leg and foot which has a big impact on the center of gravity and in turn the overall gesture.

Vertical plumb lines are a useful tool for this. At my atelier whe used physical plump lines (weighted string) that we held out in front of us towards the model as a visual aid. You don't necessarily have to draw them on the paper, but it can be helpful for longer studies (not gestures). With photos and digitas tools it becomes even easier to check your own work. I like to draw the line so that it cuts through the side of the neck down to the sole of the foot. It makes it apparent how the head is positioned in relation to the rest of the body in your reference and drawing.

It's not bad overall you can definitely read the gesture so as far as that goes I think you did a great job, there's just some things that detract from that.
The hips you drew are tilted down towards the leg that stands on the ground, but the leg that stands on the ground is actually pushing the hip up making it tilt in the opposite direction.
Your feet look like flippers because the lines for the sole and top of the foot align too much.
Theres some problems with distances/ measurements like the arm that's resting on the hip not coming out far enough and the knee of the extended leg being too low.
The calf of the extended leg sags down too far, the taper inwards already starts esentially just below the knee, yet in your drawing the taper inwards only really start above the ankle.

Touhou is a series of shitty top down scroll up shooting games (like around 10 or so without counting fan games and spin off games) that were all allegedly created by one single game developer called ZUN. But instead of space ships and giant monsters you have lots LOTS of animu girl characters in funny hats and costumes that are references to obscure Japanese folklore creatures who shoot stupid amount of magical bullets at each other.

Because of the characters being cute girls and having an absolute crapton of them the Touhu games became way more popular than they should have any right of being resulting in a massive fandom and some awesome fanarts.

Is there a way to study eye foreshortening at different angles? I know this sounds like a fool's errand (to the point where I've been tempted to just move on with body proportions) but there's no point in doing that if you haven't nailed the basics of the head.
I've noticed that I can get some extreme side profile angles (I don't know the exact term but that's probably the best way to put it) close to it's actual reference but when it comes to 3/4 sides, I feel like as if my brain just decides to take a shit.

It's nice and expressive, good job. Don't pay attention to the people saying the pose is wrong, we're past the time where things need to represent reality exactly. It's a girl sitting down with huge proportions mixed with very small ones. I think you got the point across very well regardless of anatomical "mistakes". A part of drawing is seeing things the way you wanna see it, if you wanna see a pose that isn't bound to reality draw that shit, it is still pleasing to the eye.

I would have it straight up in a fist like she's confidently leading her troops to victory. Aligning the arm with the rest of the body will be good shape design, you want things to all correlate with each other more or less since you'll have contrast in the shape, seen in her arm going out. I would also recommend next time be more expressive in the torso and legs, have them doing something interesting, I think an X shape for the whole figure would look really cool, but that would be a more serious take on the character. You made her seem confidently silly so idk you figure out how to put them into shape, but always keep in mind what you want their pose to say about them.

You have a promising career as a police sketch artist.

There's one thing you could do to make your faces more masculine: draw more lines. I don't mean to add cross-hatching, but to accentuate the features of the face. Draw the lines that go from the nostrils to the corners of the mouth. Draw lines to accentuate cheekbones. Draw in a philtrum. Thicken the eyebrows.

Other things: Don't color the lips. It looks like lipstick. Make the upper lip thinner than the lower lip. In fact, consider not drawing the upper lip at all.

You also don't know how to pose the arm you did draw. The thumb should be on top and facing us.

Based on the rest of the pose, the character appears confident about something. The standard answer would be to have the character's other hand resting on her hip, but that only duplicates what's already expressed and doesn't express the scene's action. The question of pose can be solved like this: what are you trying to convey? Is she leading an army into battle? Challenging an opponent to a duel? Pointing to something in the distance? About to pop some kid's balloon? Determine what's happening, what the character is interacting with, and you'll know what to have the other hand doing.

Complete guide to drawing from life collects most of his books i believe, i dont think he has any specific exercises so i just copy plates

Dodson is extremely good for getting over the hump of learning to draw what you see and shop up linework until you can feel confident putting it down. I dont return to it that much though, because most of it is just learning to sketch from life iirc.

When drawing from observation, is it better to spend a lot of time on a single drawing and trying to make it look as good as possible, or should you draw lots of sketches instead?

Lots of relatively finished sketches. Flesh things out and "complete" them but don't constantly polish them or you will make slow progress.

Anyone know what brand sketchbook this is? It says "white white" on the cover and the pic is from Miss Jisu's drawing demo with proko.

It's a survival instinct that allowed humankind to evolve. Understanding why something is off requires study and self-awareness.

People climb mountains without paths all the time. They're called mountain climbers. Like you, they start at the bottom of the mountain, stare up at the summit and think, "This is fucking impossible." They eventually get there, though. All it takes is getting a sturdy grip on the mountain to start climbing. Oh, and don't look down.

thats not how you should do speculars/highlights, you need to think of them as helping to define the 3d form of the drawing rather than following the contours. its extremely rare this sort of thin, wispy line is justified as a shape for a highlight.

Look at Corrosive Ooze by Daniel Ljunggren for MTG for an example of professional quality handling of speculars. There's lots of other techniques packed in there you can steal for yourself, and learning and understanding them will go a long way for the rest of your art, even for other materials.

Don't forget you can play with Hue or Saturation when you push Value as well
