What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Some things I notice immediately:

- The pupil should not be in the front area of the iris. See pic related.
- Because we can see the inside of the ear in the other two from the front, but from profile we can see the same amount, it makes it feel like the ear is bent backwards. We should see more from the side or less from the front.
- The back of the head says she's looking up, but the front and nose says she's looking forward. If she's supposed to be looking straight, the back of the head should connect with the neck at a higher point. See pic related. If she's supposed to be looking up, angle the front of the face to match.

Honestly though, it's not bad. I'm just nitpicking because you pointed out that you think there's something wrong with it.

Thank you, if it helps, I think sketches always look more energetic, so I don’t put a lot into polish. I think longer unbroken brushstrokes that span the length of a gesture help give things energy as well. Is this your character design? If so the silhouette on the right is so much stronger, and I really recommend reworking his armour to show that off more especially emphasizing the frog feet and spindly legs. I'd also recommend looking into shapes in character design. Right now hes a lanky, tall, long frog, with small round shield, and a thick square sword. I'd recommend reworking the sword to be more like a long skinny sabre, to match the frog knight's long legged nature.

he also might be a lizard? I cant tell.

Thanks, By now I'm only on Twitter, still have to learn a lot, but maybe I started practicing a lot rendering circles and simple shapes. Because I use traditional media, pencils mostly, I use a dry brush to render the pencil over the paper. But it depends on the style, others use a cross hatching style like Serpieri for expample (pic related)

I don't really have anything to share, animation was always pretty intuitive to me, you know that stretching and moving circle exercise every new animator is doing? >some shade of red (which I never figured out)
>flesh tone, which I haven't figured out in general
>pink leggings, which I accidentally made purple

the black and white are just highlights, which are really weird for me. Samus and Spider Gwen have colors that are much simpler and more forgiving.

Forget the books. Try wrapping lines, and uh, wrapping your mind around perspective. In an intuitive way, not the vanishing points and all that. Think about the volume. Koki (pictured) is great at conveying form on simple figures. It doesn't have to be a cartoon, perspective is everywhere. Look for perspective clues, like the stripes or creases on a dress. Think about how objects are oriented or tilted in space, and how this effects their perspective. A good exercise is to redline like here, but for the whole figure. Start with something simple like an apple. Apples are basically lumpy spheres, but there's more going on there than you might think.
Though fwiw, many cartoonists intentionally flatten for style. Pretty common in rubberhose. But if you want a sense of depth, you need to think in terms of the 3D shape, not just the graphic/2D one. Graphical considerations come afterward.

>Not being overly concerned with end result is a good way to stay productive and try things you rarely would.

Yes, this is key. Focusing on your process more than the product leads to growth and discoveries about art.

Onto the crits:

The perspective is convincing for 2/3rds of the picture until the horizon line. Beneath that some of the figures look properly scaled to my eye, such as the small ones closest to the portcullis, but others are not, such as the hot babe at the bottom. While I think her face is fine in itself, she looks like she's standing in a hole in the ground when she should actually be completely in the frame. According to Loomis, all figures of the same height standing on the same ground plane should be intersected by the horizon line at the same point on their bodies. Pic related.

While the castle does a good job of establishing the perspective, the building itself looks incomplete. What's already there isn't necessarily bad but it looks like you drew a castle from imagination instead of from reference. But you seem fully capable of drawing good castles if you spent more time on it.

This is a pretty fun sketch otherwise. The dragons have a lot of movement and character--I can tell you must have studied them from reference first. The magic energy sparking off the sceptre also adds a lot of movement to the piece and divides up the composition in a pleasing way, nicely separating the knights from the fearsome beasts. And I like the girl knight in profile a lot.

Your work is very good anon, keep it up!

Yeah it's watercolor over linework. I'm new to WC so I get that horrid patchy texture when painting wet on dry and I'm still trying to figure out how to get an even tone. That's a good suggestion, I'll get used to painting first and applying lines later. I also found that painting wet-on-wet helps smooth out the brushstrokes. I'm more comfortable with oil, watercolor is a foreign land to me.

Wow, thank you so much.

Yeah, I totally winged it. I just wanted to focus on an interesting comp, draw things I wanted without stressing over how bad I am at it, and I also just wanted more than a few figures in the comp.

Everything was from imagination. I'm not saying that to brag, you've already noticed how the castle design suffered for it. As for the dragons, I just got lucky. I spent a day grinding dragons about a month ago, and I guess some of it stuck.

The girl that seems to be in a hole was not intended to be standing because I didn't want to cover the soldiers behind her. But I think I could have conveyed that she's not supposed to be standing better.

Again, thank you. I'll try to amend some of the weaknesses this sketch poses in my next drawing. I'll pay closer attention to the perspective from now on.

linework and shading has potential but your anatomy has issues, ear is too big, forearm is too long and the perspective fails to convey any depth on the upper arm because there's no proper foreshortening to give the feel of perspective. Left foot looks broken and the pose is kinda stiff overall. You have potential but try and draw with more references to study figures/fundies. You can do this while applying ur style ofc.

It's not too slow, it's too smooth. You gotta remember that key frames are your action points, and in betweens are transition frames. That choppy anime style is so iconic, because there's certain things the human eye can't detect, and rendering action sloppy actually feels more true to life than if it were smooth. Past a certain point, you don't detect speed anymore. That's where stylistic choices like speed lines and stretch and squash come in. You should probably be letting your keys do more of the heavy lifting.

I actually like how smooth your animation is if that's what you were going for. But if you're worried about it being too slow, I'd maybe break down a favorite animator of yours frame by frameto see what I'm talking about.

this is cute anon you have a very good eye for shading! the only thing that kinda detracts from the image to me is the mid-right of the image, that part in the pond reflection where it's clear you used the same colour a bunch on lower opacity. it doesn't fit with the rest of the picture desu. ideally the water in general would be more detailed to give more atmosphere to the piece (and for added coziness). overall, very nice tough. you clearly have talent.

you should try working on a canvas thats bigger than the frame, and then block the basic shape of your subject so that you can see the perspective, then slowly block in the rest of the objects.

I got my first 2k doing non-lewd stuff. Most of that 2k are just other pixel artists, the pixel art community really is quite small and we all follow each other. I got seen in the pixel art community doing pixel dailies, which are just daily challenges where you can get retweeted by a 60k follower account. Once I started doing lewd a few weeks ago I quickly gained 3k, because coom. I've seen people grow faster though. If youre looking for growth pixel art isnt the way to go- it's niche and most people don't want their porn in a 150x150 grid.

Doing fanart of other artist's OCs is really good for getting a big surge of followers- I didn't intend for it or go into doing fanart expecting or thinking about retweets, I just really have fun drawing other people's characters. A good amount of people unfollowed me when I started posting butts though kek

>niche and most people don't want their porn in a 150x150 grid.

im not really into drawing porn haha, but i appreciate all the tips.
I recently got retweeted by artist i love, after i retweeted his work he just did that, really made my day and i understood what twitter is about.
It is about that ability to make connections with many wonderful artists around the world, ability to be recognized by my idols is worth much more than followers or likes will ever be.
I will try drawing some fanart, mainly because i saw people receive them be so happy about it

Truly this! Ive had 3 of my top 10 favorite artists follow me back and that feeling is still truly crazy. No amount of followers could give me that cozy satisfaction that one of my idols not only noticed me, but liked my art enough to follow. I wish you good luck with twitter my frend.

love the moto-compo, nitpick though is that its missing the part of the fork that should attach to the front tire

The lighting doesn’t feel convincing, maybe it’s the super saturated shadows that are throwing me off? I like the sketch a lot
