A trick I learned from here is to use software to compress the values of an image. Look up "indexed color." In one of his videos Marco Bucci does something similar while analyzing a Sargent painting I think, but you probably know about Bucci.
Painting is not my strong suit but I got better at it after a) understanding the structure of what I'm drawing (anatomy basically) and b) doing simple value studies in pencil. There's patterns in everything. Pecs and abs for example tend to be lit in a certain way, or tend to show certain shapes of shadow and light, no matter the intensity of the light. Find those patterns by observing and sketching, and then try to recall them from memory in an imaginative drawing, bearing in mind that occluded areas (cracks etc.) are darkest and only it gets lighter from there. And then compare with ref.

my two cents:
- maybe pull back on the closeup, bu keep the characters the focal point of the comp. Maybe include some inanimate objects in the room would add a tiny bit more information and grounds the scene. I like the window pane's shadow for example. Stuff like that.

- imo, their heads are too large, maybe shrink them a little, even if you're going for something a bit more exaggerated with the proportions.
