IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Reminder to read the sticky.
>So you want to draw?
>Young and old, smart and dumb, able-bodied or paralyzed, everyone can learn to draw. Drawing is a skill that takes years to master, and "talent" is nearly irrelevant when factoring in time and effort. So how do we start learning? By getting rid of bad habits, then learning the fundamentals. The first yet biggest bad habit is symbol drawing. Let’s cover it.

The first thing that springs to mind is the posing. It's awkward how the subject is resting their chin on her wrist rather than the palm of her hand. The way her arm is drawn makes it look as though her arm is coming up through the neck of her shirt. Nobody wears a wristwatch that far up their forearm and on the side of their arm. Everything looks like it was drawn freehand with zero blocking. My advice is to try again, but make sure the structure, proportions and pose are in place before adding detail to the portrait.

So I've been doing Calligraphy a lot because I love to write letters, so I've gotten a lot better at doing differents fonts and typefaces w/e. I can draw/paint fun/cool symbols, 2D things, gold ornamentation/paisley things. I do it either with a brush/paint, or ink/fountainpen/etc/brushpen.

Anyway, I'm trying to learn to draw now, and Its definitely hard to draw in ink. Shading is probably the hardest, and of course, making a mistake is permanent.

Should I move to charcoal? or a pencil?

it's also why most people's sketches look better than the finished piece, because on the finished piece they were too worried about the final outcome.
if you've ever seen professionals draw, they usually draw very loose, even for the final lineart. they usually don't give a shit about making mistakes, which is why they can easily work around the mistakes.

In the step by step on the blogspot post, he doesn't explain how he knows:
How big to make the eyes in the first place.
How far the two eyes should be from each other.
What relation the mouth has to the center line (as far as I can tell, there's no obvious one).
How close the nose should be to the far eye and how far it should extend down.
And this is obviously before we get to all the details of the features.
So basically he ended up drawing all of these things based on intuition and prior experience. So "construction" ends up lookingpretty fucking worthless here.

Mileage, intuition, remembering past studies you did of references, these things are what do the heavy lifting when you draw. It's not clear how much construction actually helps. When /beg/s first try and construct, it inevitably looks like shit. Their constructions only improve as they study more references and gain mileage and hone their intuition. This implies that it's the intuition that's doing the work, not the construction. Compare this to an actual knowledge-based algorithm, like steps for solving a math problem, and people are much more easily able to apply it consistently and reliably as soon as they learn the steps. This is not so for constructive drawing.

It's kinda funny how most artists will tell you to use construction but then when you ask them how they learned to draw they usually just copied stuff without any construction.
Construction works to get the placement right, but there's no point in getting the placement right if you don't actually know how to draw the thing you're trying to draw.

>How big to make the eyes in the first place
You make as big or as small you want it to be, it's your preference. As long as it looks good for you.
>How far the two eyes should be from each other.
Study different proportions, different topic from construction but it's almost always present.
>What relation the mouth has to the center line (as far as I can tell, there's no obvious one).
That's exactly what is construction for, finding the relationship between features and the guidelines, see useful they are, even you saw that unconsciously.
>How close the nose should be to the far eye and how far it should extend down.
>And this is obviously before we get to all the details of the features.
Proportions.
>So basically he ended up drawing all of these things based on intuition and prior experience.
Yes, you're not entirely wrong.
>So "construction" ends up lookingpretty fucking worthless here.
Maybe, until you need to draw something in an angle/perspective you're not familiar. Construction will make your life a lot easier. Look up this video demonstrating it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjkb8YxE9PM
